Apple, please make all your phone and all of your products USB-C or wireless charging compatible. This includes your keyboards, mice, headphones, etc. Make USB-C the last cable needed.

I am under the impression there aren’t enough pins to handle the bandwidth; It’s a limitation of the plug.

Otherwise Apple woulda done this years ago, right? I can’t imagine anyone at apple wants USB 2.0 on their flagship phones.
The last iPads Pro that had lightning supported USB 3.0 transfer speeds. The limitation isn't in the connector. The limitation is that Apple, for whatever reason, refuses to use a USB 3.0 chip in the iPhone itself.

Isn't there a certain level of hypocrisy re: wireless charging (of any kind, not just MagSafe).
Not in my opinion. Have to provide choices to the customers.
  • It's far less efficient than wired charging.
True, but more convenient.
  • Creates more heat, especially at higher charging speeds, and that has a negative impact on battery longevity.
Up to the individual to decide on the usage and let them take the risk.
  • Faster battery degradation = bigger negative impact on the planet as we'll need to mine more materials to manufacture replacements or dispose of spent batteries safely.
Not proven, but solid opinion. If we are worried about lithium, Tesla is stripping the planet.
  • You still have to plug in the "wireless" charger so, on some level, there is still a wire.
But not the wire from the brick to the phone.
For a company that touts its environmental record at every turn (and often does so arrogantly)
Yes, they (apple) touts their own environmental record, but they can’t force consumers to be environmentally friendly or green.
wouldn't it behoove them to only ship charging solutions that promote charging efficiency and minimal planetary impact?
Customers want choice, even if the choice is between Buying a wireless charger or new mfi cable.
Perhaps Mr. Schiller can't make a "courage" related connection to shareholder return on this front. Then again, ever since that 2016 keynote he's come off as a jacka$$.
Mr. Schillers remark has nothing to do with you are conflating two thoughts. 1) is apple green and 2) is the customer green?

“Lightning is outdated” is just a slogan which doesn’t provide any argument. I think a connector shouldn’t limit a device, and USB-C certainly does, in terms of waterproofing, durability, internal space… Lightning has the disadvantage of transfer speeds, but AirDrop is even more convenient for 99% of the users. And when it comes to availability, finding a right Lightning cable is way easier than finding a USB-C. Anyway, the connector is the last thing I care about in a phone (I’d say almost everyone agrees), so it seems like a minor discussion to me.

Two words: Wired Carplay. The vast majority of vehicles out there today don't have wireless support (and the dongles don't work worth a damn). Either apple would have to create a wireless dongle that does (and omg I'd buy one in a cold minute), or they'll continue to have to offer devices with ports.

Plus, I have zero interest trying to sync 500GB of content over wifi.

USB-C solves both problems.
Indeed. See my post #98.

Even before Apple made the decision to stop including items for phones or whatever to save weight (or to be able to get more money), they had issues with cables as a whole. I have quite a few of them that the protective coating cracks or falls apart. And it isn't just phones...look at the Macbook's charging cables.

Regardless of whether you are pro lightning or pro USBC or pro safemag...we all have a common issue...the cables that connect the devices that are portable.

I just hope they switch to USB-C.. they can't get rid of the port completely, too many devices rely upon some kind of physical port, namely millions of cars that have Apple CarPlay. They would piss off a lot of people if they killed it off completely unless they can magically turn all those cars into wireless CarPlay.
I use an aftermarket adapter to convert my wired CarPlay into wireless CarPlay! EASY! And it actually works in my 2017 Honda Civic Ex. I love it!!!!!

Yes, I know but if your holding the iPhone for 30 minutes to a hour, having a disk on the back is just not comfortable

I suppose battery life is now at the point where it doesn’t need to be charging all the time so it won’t matter regardless of this change
It feels no different than holding an iPhone with a smart battery case on it

It's been said that Apple likes the Lightning port because they make a lot of money on licensing fees.

And there is certainly some truth to that. I've heard that Apple makes approximately $4 from every MFI-certified Lightning cable.

But honestly... how many cables does a person actually buy over the lifetime of an iPhone? Two? Maybe three tops?

So Apple gets up to $12 in licensing fees after I bought their $1,000 phone. Neat.

Hey Apple... you can charge me $50 more for a USB-C version of the iPhone... and I'll happily pay it so I can finally use the same cable to charge my Macbook Air and iPad Mini.

Hell... make the next iPhone require a $50 Thunderbolt cable and I'll still be happy because that same cable can be used to charge other USB-C devices. It'll still make my life easier by not having a special cable for just the iPhone while having other cables for everything else.

:p

Apple did do this years ago, the 2017 iPad Pro had Lightning to USB3.0
They even made a point to bring it up at the announcement.
The fact the iPhone has stuck with 2.0 for all these years is ridiculous.
However, I still prefer lightning to USBC, mainly because of “the snap.”
When you plug a lightning cable in, it makes a very satisfying “snap.”
It feels secure, much better than USBC which always feels a yank away from breaking and bending.

I guess I'm in the minority. I have a clock radio that works just fine & does EVERYTHING I need, except it's a 30-pin dock. The adapter has been great - except all the new leather cases are almost completely closed on the bottom, so I've had to modify the case to fit what I need.

It'll cost me roughly $75+ to replace a single clock radio with the multiple pieces I'd need to replace one item that works just fine; and that's only if the cords are long enough for me to put things where I need them (because Apple Charging cables are NEVER quite long enough)

The portless idea is stupid. Wireless charging is nowhere near as mature, it's much slower than regular charging. And how exactly are you going to establish a wireless connection to restore your iPhone when it gets stuck in recovery mode? A lot more issues that could be fixed by users will now require a visit to a service center.

The world may have been ready to be forced into no headphone jack but it absolutely isn't ready for wireless charging to be the only option.

Internet recovery has existed on the Mac for years.
It used to require an external cd or DVD.
It is absolutely possible, and most likely probable, that Apple will bring Internet recovery to the iPhone and iPad.
In fact they’ve had code for it in iOS for years now.
Even if they have no plans of removing the port, I still wish they would bring this just because most people nowadays use their iOS device as their only computing device

Can’t they do a USB-C port that allows the lightning cable to nest inside it or something or provide a free dongle?! This makes no sense when iPads as USB-C. Also portless is a meh from me. I like sleekness as much as the next guy but sometimes you do have to plug in…

Apple just updated the Magic Trackpad and it still has a Lightning port. If their computer peripherals aren't migrating away from Lightning yet, the iPhone certainly won't anytime soon.
all I can say is that I don't want to buy another iPhone till there is a significant uptick in transfer speed. I could care less whether USB-C or lightning. It took me 6 hours to download all the photos on my wife's phone this weekend (120 gb) because she was upgrading and (sadly), was given a phone with half the storage of her current phone... I didn't realize till we'd already fully opened, applied the screen protector, and everything. Sigh... all worked out, but, good grief, that was slow.

This caught my attention

Apple is concerned about lower standards of water resistance for USB-C compared to Lightning

Hadn’t heard that Lightning port has better water resistance. Hmmm…! Is that true?

Mag safe is great for an overnight charge but not while holding it in your hand
USB-C would probably be more realistic. As for port less it seems to be several years away if at all

Disagree. There are already third party wired to wireless CarPlay. Easy for Apple to first party a better one. Or bless official alternatives. It's such a fastly improved experience, I think people would take it in stride, in spite of the usual anti-change complainers.

How about an 8mm round hole that is a charging & data port as well as an analog audio jack? "One hole to rule them all." ;)
