Wow this is sad news. It seems he will continue to design products for Apple, but will also do stuff for other companies which will make the Apple products less unique. Can you imagine an Apple product with a “designed by Johnny Ive” patch on it like those LaCie disks? I don’t know, for me this is a very sad day, as he was very much what carried over the Steve Jobs legacy imo!

What is Android, if not a fork of Linux? What do have the so called smart things (TVs etc.) if not Linux? Not to speak of routers, NAS etc. Most of these are using some kind of Linux or BSD (yeah, this is Unix) kernel.
Fine, I'll concede to that. I may have exaggerated but calling Android Linux is a hard stretch.
https://www.androidauthority.com/android-linux-784964/

Just because server rooms and the random black boxes around our homes are running some linux kernel doesn't mean it's a good choice for a main OS. Most distros are generally unintuitive and squarely in the domain of engineers (and engineers unwitting mothers who are used as "proof" that normal people can use it). It didn't even gain critical mass in server rooms until Red Hat started offering enterprise support and standardizing many of the operations, i.e., all the things Microsoft was already doing.

Linux will become a popular desktop OS once it no longer matters what the desktop OS is.

I think Apple saying that Jony will still be working on Apple products and that Apple will be his first client (true or not) is simply to keep folks (shareholders) calm. Regardless of how many products he designs for Apple moving forward, or who at Apple is now driving, overseeing, or approving future designs, this is a significant dynamics shift in the design process. Time will tell whether that turns out to be for the better or the worse for Apple, but it's definitely interesting. I generally like the products Jony has designed for Apple but I have also noticed a pretty big dip in product QC in the last couple of years. One could easily point the finger at manufacturing, but if you're building something perfectly that has been imperfectly designed, who's to blame? I suspect Jony doesn't hear the word "no" or "can't" very often, either from the manufacturers or indeed, his own design team. Design and manufacturing is very much a collaborative effort, but I wonder who typically has the last word in those meetings. It is in this shift, whereby Jony is no longer the client, that could turn out to be a blessing for Apple. Time will tell.

99.99% of consumer devices do NOT run on Linux. Do not confuse servers and infrastructure with end user devices.

That's not what the poster said. He/she said nothing regarding consumer devices running Linux. No confusion here (except maybe yours). I read it as it was. The internet runs on Linux. Internet consumption does not (generally speaking).

This is what I really wonder about.

There have been clear issues with form over function that appear to be due to SJ (Apple III overheating due to fan / case design, G4 cube cracking), but newer design problems like the butterfly keyboard, the trashcan Mac Pro (overheating and non-pro design-uber-alles form-factor) makes me wonder if it is Ive or TC that is responsible.

Jobs died in late 2011 (?), the Trashcan was unveiled in mid 2013. I find it likely that the project was well underway when Jobs was still in charge and IMO a radical redesign like that would have only gone forward with his explicit approval.

He's also the guy who pushed away from just making traditional computer designs so wouldn't it have fit right into his vision?

That is the first thing I thought upon hearing the news. I remember reading that he wanted to go back home in the past but did not because of Apple.

This could be a way for him to do that and still work on apple related projects.

Seriously doubt that - taxes are much higher in the UK than in the US

Wowa... Forget Johnny for a second folks. "...named 24-year Apple veteran Sabih Khan..." ???
Since when has a 24 year old ever been a veteran?
He must be some hot **** to have climb that high so young and fast.
Isn't his position the same one Tim had on joining Apple?

“24 year Apple veteran” means he’s been with the company for 24 years, not that he’s 24 years old

Alas, Apple has just lost their Golden Boy.

The last of the Steve Jobs era.

No one there knows Apple products better than he does. It’s going to be an interesting next few years folks.

Although, I do think that we won’t see any major changes for a while. Apple probably already has the next 2-3 iPhones/iPads already rendered out.

"Apple will be among his new company's "primary clients.""

So... nothing really changes except there will be a "Designed By Johnny" logo on devices now.
Pretty much. I don’t know why people are making it seem like he won’t be involved with Apple design anymore. Read the darn article people.

Okay, but can we at least get him to come back and narrate all those over-the-top product design videos??

Please no.
[doublepost=1561722370][/doublepost]The fact Apple released this news on a Friday means they want minimum coverage/exposure. If they wanted maximum coverage it would be released on a Sunday night or Monday morning. That’s how the news cycle works.

One of the culprits for the existence of bad MBP is gone. Hope he is not polluting some of the good designs of Windows laptops.

TC is next before there is a chance for Apple to go back to the "old" Apple we long-term customers since the Apple II era love.

I've been waiting years to say this...Hip Hip, Hooray! Hip, Hip Hooray! What a complete hack Ive is! All he ever did was ride Jobs' coat tails, and tweak designs and Jobs saw fit. Jobs should've hired Dieter Rams. Now there is an excellent industrial designer!

They released it Thursday.
