contrary to what everyone believes, the lack of updating is good news.
The last time they updated this mini, it was to solder half of the components and transfer half of the proc. these updates are actually downgrade.

I think a lot of Mac Mini and Mac Pro buyers don't want either machine, they want the non-existant "Mac" - a mid-level desktop with no built in monitor.

I ended up buying a 2017 27" iMac to replace my 2006 Mac Pro, but I really hate the all-in-one concept (especially with no Target Display Mode). I did consider the 2014 Mac Mini and the 2013 Mac Pro, but didn't want the a 2-core Mac Mini nor an aging Mac Pro (or even older 2012 Mac Mini), so I sucked it up and bought an iMac. I'd be happy to buy a machine that has the same hardware as the base model 27" iMac without the display, even if it didn't have the same value as the iMac (e.g. $200 less would be fine with me). The iMac is taking up space on my desk that could be used for an external display that I could also be using with my 15" MBP when I want to (before the iMac, I would hook up two external monitors to my 15" MBP, now just one).

I'm hoping Apple has a new platform that is split into "Mac" and "Mac Pro" which are the same modular form-factor but different components, basically to mirror the iMac and iMac Pro split. In this scenario of a mid-range Mac existing, Apple would probably keep selling the 2014 Mac Mini as their low-end offering.

I don't expect to get my wish here, but lets keep hoping and those who want a mid-level desktop should submit feedback (I have). I may just want things that are obvious, but there have been many times where I submit feedback and then actually get what I want, so I think that is worthwhile to do so.

The Mac mini died a horrible death in 2014, no quad core, no upgradable memory, no room for a second hd, it’s dead Jim.

Apple is really leaving us computer enthusiasts (who don't use iOS) no choice but to Hackintosh or leave the platform altogether.

This is getting ridiculous.

I'm serious, why stay? What can I do with a Mac that I can't with something else?

For me the answer is multitouch...so far I have not seen a better multitouch or multiple desktop implementation.

Other than that, third-party apps is where it's at; I hate Apple's services and I don't use iOS so the integration bit is moot.

Still, now that Win 10 has multiple desktops and have copied the Mac in how to use it, the impact is minimized.

That said, I HATE that I'm even considering leaving the Mac. And I HATE that it's because of Apple itself.

Why do you HATE leaving the Mac platform? Apple doesn't care about you or your needs... this thread is evidence of that. Apple is now a smartphone company, with a lot of accessories... the Mac being one of them.

You want to talk about "multi touch"? How about being able to use touch, pen/pencil, pointing device, keyboard... all interactively on your computer? Apple is way behind on this stuff and stubbornly dug in on an out of date strategy. You want to use your pencil, well you have to buy an iPad and use iOS. You want to use a mouse or touchpad, well you have to buy a Mac.

I don't understand why you would HATE to leave a vendor who keeps providing clear evidence that they are not a preferred vendor of traditional computers. You can say what you want about Microsoft, but they are committed to the Windows platform and are continuing to innovate with it. Looking forward to installing the Fall Creators Update today when I get a chance.

Now that's a real hoot! I guess if one is incredibly weak and possesses zero self-control.

Not really. If you're in need of a new Mac you've either got to be daft or stupid to replace it with a 3 year old Mac Mini, and pay prices that are inflated even for current tech. Granted you don't have to buy an iMac, but there is little choice left that gives a sensible price/performance ratio.

It's like when you're starving and you go into a sandwich store and they've only got Egg Mayonnaise sandwiches left. You hate Egg Mayonnaise sandwiches, but would you rather leave empty handed and starve? Or buy one against your wishes, because you are going to keel over if you don't eat soon?

I have a 2012 Quad Core Mac Mini. I've been considering selling it, as I use it basically as a NAS and that's it. On the flip side, it's a pretty dam good NAS.
I'm using my 2012 quad core as an iTunes server. I bought it to replace my old white 2010 MacBook in which the battery swelled up and broke the palmrest as it pushed through the touchpad. Anyways, I used it as my only computer for about 6 months and then retired it to the desk where it sits serving up iTunes TV shows. It still has the original 1TB HD in it since iTunes is all I use it for, never needed anything better.

Does Apple really have that much power over your life? Why do you willingly give a tech company that much power?

If Chevrolet does not offer an automobile that meets my needs, I would look at other automobile manufacturers and find one that does.

Intel NUC anyone? That's where the market has headed. Apple could have released an ultra-small form factor Mac mini about 5 years ago and defined the market. Instead Apple now has to play catch-up.

The Intel NUC is a great little computer. It does all the System Admin tasks that I throw at it and the small form factor keeps the desk footprint very tidy. About the only complaint I have is the fan on my i5 model, while quiet is noticeable compared to the Mac Mini 2012 sitting on the other side of the desk.

It really is a shame that the Mini has been so neglected but as others have said Apple is an iOS company first and foremost these days.

It really is a shame. I was fully invested in the Apple eco system, but couldn't wait any longer. Had no interest in all one (iMac's) so finally succumbed earlier this year and built a Windows desktop. At first I had serious remorse but over time Windows 10 has honestly been fine. I would of been all over an updated quad core mac mini. I'm sure I'm not the only one whose ended up jumping ship.

But not with osX. So your analogy is more like if Ford were the only manufacturer to make a pickup truck, but you hated the 3 models they offered and no one else made pickup trucks.

It is a classic case of a vendor lock-in, isn’t it? Moving away may be easier for some people than others. It’s definitely not like simply changing a car manufacturer in many cases. That analogy would suit better if we were talking about Windows machines.

For me, it's still the ideal conference room computer. Skip brining a laptop and tons of adapters, the Mac Mini mounts under the table, connected to wall mounted displays or projectors. We have dozens of them at my University.

I did the same thing at a company I worked for. Replaced all the kludged together laptops and desktops in various conference rooms with a tidy Mac Mini setup and all issues went away.

I guess you are on to something. Given the path Apple has chosen for the mini, next upgrade might very well be something that moves even further away from what desktop users consider being a computer. The soldered ram and security torx indicates Apple already 2014 viewed the mini as a household appliance; You are supposed to buy it to fulfil one task, and when new needs arise, you should buy another (Apple) appliance product. Adapting and upgrading hardware and multi-purpose machines are sooo 20th century.

I hate leaving because I love the Mac. I love the way I get things done on it, the feel of the OS, and how many things are implemented. And Windows multitouch is not yet as smooth and robust as in the Mac yet in my opinion.

But I hear you.

Apple losing focus again: instead of focusing on their core products, they spend their time on crap like smiley poo emoticons. How do they expect to sell the mini when they don't even sell a monitor anymore? What a clueless company Apple has become under Tim Cook. What happened to the product ecosystem that made Apple famous?!

Indeed, the entire Mac line is behind the times: the Mac Pro needs an update (though great design for prosumer market), the Macbook needs another USB port and a speed boost, the entire product line needs to shift to 10G ethernet, and speed upgrades are needed across the board. I imagine these are coming - but hey its getting boring.

Oh how my eyes lit up when I read "Mac Mini" at the beginning of the headline. Then I read the rest of the headline...
