Why keep quoting figures from these guys when every quarter Apple proves them (and other "research" firms) wrong? Just wait a few weeks for Apple to announce the real sales numbers.

Apple should reduce Mac price and release both a mini tower plus display and Mac tablet. Once Mac gets 25% worldwide market share, Windows will be history in three years.

That's a pipe dream until Apple fixed SMB networking, improves Finder, improves graphics performance for gaming, and adds Enterprise features like iSCSI, Active Directory, etc.

OS X is fine for casual use but these days it's really fallen behind Windows in terms of functionality and even stability.

Not that I trust these numbers but with all the hype around Surface where is Microsoft?
The Surface branded products have never been nor will they ever be mass market sellers. Surface is a reference brand to get OEM's to get off their collective butts to make more compelling devices. For the most part, it's worked. Surface devices tend to be priced towards the ceiling allowing OEM's to come in under that with their "competing" products so that they reflect a better value per dollar and it allows the OEM's to get a little better profit. Ya know, since they offer more of a bargain compared to Surface devices. wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

There's a simple explanation of why that is:

Apple releases hot garbage year after year and their desktops are obsolete before they even make it to market, so Apple buyers NEED to constantly replace their terrible computers.

PC desktops however, last years, can be easily upgraded, come with way better hardware and cost less. Duh.

"Higher PC prices due to the impact of component shortages for DRAM, solid state drives (SSDs) and LCD panels had a pronounced negative impact on PC demand in the second quarter of 2017," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner "The approach to higher component costs varied by vendor. Some decided to absorb the component price hike without raising the final price of their devices, while other vendors transferred the costs to the end-user price."
Really? I would think it's just because so many people already have PCs now ("saturated market"), and they don't need to be replaced often, especially now that they're so powerful and aren't getting huge upgrades anymore.

What is the evolution of self-built PCs and upgrades?
I don't know but I started building them in 1987 and quit in the early 2000s when Dell was good and cheap. Then in 2011 I built my machine for about $600 without drives/monitor. 2016 threw in a new SSD, upgraded from 8 to 16gb memory, and new $150 video card to drive a 4k 40" monitor. Good to go for a few more. Hubby's $2000 3 year old 27" imac? Just stuck a $50 monitor in front of it because the $500 LCD took a poo. We won't be upgrading the imac while they use crappy components and overcharge for reasonable memory and SSD. We WOULD love to buy an upgradeable memory/drive mac mini with quad core and 4k/5k capabilities but I doubt they will put it out. Too bad.

You'd have to check motherboard sales and other PC component sales.

I'd be curious to know.

I watch a ton of PC building channels on Youtube. And to me... it seems like PC building and component sales are yuge. I know they're not, though, in the grand scheme of things.

I think ASUS might sell five million motherboards in a quarter. Gigabyte less than that... then MSI and others, etc. So maybe 10 million motherboard total in a quarter?

So if PC sales are down... I don't think the main reason is people building their own PCs instead of buying them.

I'd say it has more to do with PCs lasting longer... and people not needing to buy a new PC as often as they used to.

But to your point... you can upgrade a PC and might get a few more years out of it. Though I don't know how much that would affect the broad PC market.

Also... you have to assume that a lot of those motherboards are sold to gamers... and those people weren't gonna buy a pre-built Dell Inspiron or HP Pavilion anyway. :)

Touch bar's a gimmick though. It needs to be dropped.

Disagree. There is zero logic that the Touch Bar Needs to be dropped all together. It's way to early to determine that as of yet. When Apple continues to improve the functionality and use it across the MacBook line, we will know more then. Apple isn't going to quash the TouchBar anytime soon without a doubt.

Touch Bar can be an advantage in some applications. Almost to the point that you appreciate it when you don't have Touch Bar if you have experience with it. Apple and the developers need to combine efforts and emphasize the Touch Bar to its full potential and allow it to mature. It's been less than a year and I wouldn't place that much doubt on it yet.

Strange how selling 4+ MILLION computers in 3 months can be considered stagnant. Pretty darn impressive if you ask me. Why do sales always have to go up?

Apple squeezes every dollar out of the smartphone market possible by doing yearly updates, by following trends, and by essentially giving people what they want (going from exclusive ATT to all carriers, going from small screen to big screens, going from 2G to 3G to LTE, adopting Android and jailbreak features).

They could easily follow the same tactic with the Mac.

Except, Apple also charges an extra $300 for the Touch Bar, in addition a slightly faster CPU, Double the Thunderbolt Ports and Touch ID. Yes they charge an extra $300, but you are receiving more than just the Touch Bar as you noted.

Hey! I said that exact thing the other day in another thread :p

I got my Macbook Pro in 2015. If I wanted to get a new one right now - Apple would sell me the same processor but with a slower speed, half the SDD storage space and I would have to pay MORE for that.

Does that make sense? Not to me, but it does to Tim "F. the Customers" Cook.

I don't disagree with you, but have you received any wage increase in the past two years? Genuine question.

I can't believe how bad the internal SMB client is. Why does it take so long to list a directory? And I've noticed macOS getting slower and less stable, but after checking back on Windows again, there's still no way I'm going back to using it as my main OS on my PC. And there's also no way I'm updating from 7 to 10.

Really? I thought the only difference between the entry 13 inch and the touch bar 13 inch was wwll the touch bar and a barely noticeable bump in cpu

"It's important to note that data from Gartner and IDC is preliminary and that the numbers can shift, sometimes dramatically and sometimes less so. "

Anyone else disturbed by how apologetic Mac Rumours can be ?

They had bad sales and HP did well. stop sugar coating it.
