Why is this report relevant anymore? Largest PC market at ~80% is custom build and that includes hackintoshes.

There's a simple explanation of why that is:

Apple releases hot garbage year after year and their desktops are obsolete before they even make it to market, so Apple buyers NEED to constantly replace their terrible computers.

PC desktops however, last years, can be easily upgraded, come with way better hardware and cost less. Duh.
Except "nobody" buys desktops anymore anyway. And eGPUs are going to take away even those niche desktop users once you're able to dock a laptop and have eGPUs fire up, driving multiple displays. So when it comes time for me to replace my 2008 Mac Pro, it'll probably be with a rMBP and those external components.

Laptops are a whole different competition, and Apple has consistently proven themselves with the rMBP's quality. You go buy some other similarly priced laptop, and you get some combination of a worse display, bad battery life, slower SSD, bad keyboard, bad trackpad, or overall cheap build quality. But you get a slightly faster CPU... that you won't even fully utilize. Only problem is these new rMBPs with the silly USB-C ports.

"It's important to note that data from Gartner and IDC is preliminary and that the numbers can shift, sometimes dramatically and sometimes less so. "

Anyone else disturbed by how apologetic Mac Rumours can be ?

They had bad sales and HP did well. stop sugar coating it.

Don't worry... I'm sure some commenter will say HP sells a ton of $300 garbage PCs and that's why they sell so many units.

:p

"Estimates, according to..."

Can I make an estimate and we all start running around like headless chooks?

Ok, so this article could read. "Everybody you know is sliding down a hill with a cliff at the edge, you manage to stop yourself." How is that bad news? lol

Well if you where actually never sliding but on the opposite side of that Hill laying in the Beach enjoying the sun and gaining weight for the last 10 years, but all of a sudden you're beamed to the sliding Hill. That is a problem and it shows you did something wrong.

I mean, it doesn't surprise me that computer sales in general are down. We've reached a point now where the average consumer only needs to buy a new computer when the one they have breaks. My mother's Mac Mini is 4 years old now, and she'll probably have it until it breaks down completely. Aside from the dedicated PC gamer and content creators, any modest computer from 6 years ago will still do web and productivity without complaint. Consider that we are at a point now where a 35$ Raspberry Pi is actually powerful enough to use as a web and content consumption machine.

Additionally, building a PC from scratch has never been easier. Theres endless places online to order parts, and numerous YouTube channels and forums to walk someone through the process.

Even myself doing video editing and 3D rendering have been using my custom PC I built in its current state for 3 years now, and its only now I'm starting to consider upgrades, and even then I just need to put a new GPU and some more RAM into it and it will be good for another few years.

I don't think fully fledged computers are being abandoned like some suggest they are. Yes tablets have come a long way, but they still lack in some areas, even for the average consumer. What I think is happening more to cause this slump in PC sales is that people don't bother upgrading as frequently as they did in the 2000's, when the pace of technology was faster. And people who do need to upgrade on a yearly basis are likely those seeking top tier performance, and are also likely the type who will build their own PC anyways.

You gotta admit, Apple has kinda priced themselves out of the mainstream. Other factors include: mobile being a preferred computing platform for many (smartphone and tablets); and existing devices lasting longer. I don't think Apple will recover from this in way where you are going to see sales like 10 million per quarter, but the company needs to be more reasonable and moderate with pricing. No matter how advanced and sophisticated, $2,300 is asking too much in 2017. The highest end MacBook Pro should cost no more than two grand maxed out. With over 200 billion in the bank, Apple is not on the brink of bankruptcy, the company can start passing down some value to customers.

Hopefully, next years revision of the MacBook Pro in particular will see some significant price drop and come on, 256 GBs on an entry level 15 inch MBP is ridiculous. The retina MacBook needs to take the place of the MacBook Air. Its basically high priced Intel Atom Netbook in different colors.

With all this said, maybe Apple is happy with the way things are. Its just an inevitable path where your default computing will supplied by iPad Pro, iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods.

A non-touchbar 15" pro, with a regular size trackpad and 32GB RAM, I can dream!

So just when the prices went up? Ain't rocket science, drop the price!;)

Price, price, price. Apple is more and more positioning itself as a luxury upscale Rolex or Mercedes type product. Under Jobs they were just a quality electronics company that sold at a premium. Their entry level devices are the same price as others premium products. I've said before that Jobs knew the value of having a quality product that could reach a wider audience. Under current management, it is margins, margins, margins.

Not that I trust these numbers but with all the hype around Surface where is Microsoft?

Surface sales have dropped over 30% across the two previous quarters so I don't expect they suddenly rebounded this quarter.

So you would think HP and Dell would see stagnant or declining sales since nobody is replacing.

I got my Macbook Pro in 2015. If I wanted to get a new one right now - Apple would sell me the same processor but with a slower speed, half the SDD storage space and I would have to pay MORE for that.

Does that make sense? Not to me, but it does to Tim "F. the Customers" Cook.

That doesn't make any sense to me. What system do you have? The processors are faster and run more efficiently, the SSD speeds doubled, and graphics card and I/O speeds are drastically improved.

I can understand if you don't like dongles, or wish they would have had magsafe, or made it thicker for even longer battery (battery is fine IMO). But unless you custom configured an i7 in 2015 and are comparing to an i5 stock or something, I don't think it's accurate to say that you aren't getting a better system now.

Lots of comments about pricing. Are you surprised? Apple’s head is firmly in the clouds when it comes to pricing. They see people buying their products as a justification of their prices, but actually it’s because they built a monopoly, which is slowly but surely crumbling. They will see a lessening willingness to pay their prices, I’m sure of it. There will come a breaking point when Apple have got to realise their prices are unrealistic and people feel ripped off. The problem is, Apple used to deliver major value for money...now, not so much. Consumers aren’t dumb. They know when something is a rip off.

Aside from that, more generally about the PC market. Would it be fear to say there hasn’t been a decline in the PC market from a professional/corporate viewpoint, but that people generally aren’t buying PCs for their homes anymore? Surely companies will always require desktop PCs?

Dongle city + much higher prices = declining sales. Apple should have slashed those prices in June.

Nobody wants to pay hundreds more for a machine that's only marginally better than older models, and requires a dozen dongles.

My 2016 is better than my 2015 in every possible way. *shrugs*

Better screen brightness, Deeper and more accurate colors, MUCH better speakers, sleeker design with color options, slightly faster ram and cpu, SSD that’s double the speed.

Yeah you forgot to mention those things.

Apple doesn't even seem to be trying to gain PC market share. They would rather live and die with the iPhone. It just seems as though Apple is throwing away some good opportunities but I'm no financial genius. I suppose Apple only wants to target a certain range of clientele and that's all there is to it. It's hard to imagine HP selling so many computers but that didn't prevent them from losing a lot of money.
