Hmmm, interesting. I may even get one just so it can be a larger trackpad than the one I already have on my early '08 MBP (non-unibody).

And the name... why not simply "Magic Pad"?

Could be very interesting then!

Anything has to be better than the Magic Mouse. What an abortion of form over function that thing is.

A desktop without a mouse. That's pretty forward thinking right there.

How great is this? Rumors have been floating around for months that Apple might be pushing for a touch-screen iMac, and this type of input device would be a good "test" of the market to see if people really embrace a touch interface or not.

If the market accepts it, it would lead to touch-interface computer and perhaps we'll finally be done with the mouse/trackball.

Some people have said that dragging, dropping are problems. I personally would use the Apple-C and Apple-V to cut and paste if moving multiple files, or if I'm deleting something, I Apple-Delete something and send it packing to the Trash. Keyboard shortcuts are glorious.

Hope this gets announced today, that would be very exciting!

These days, mice are obsolete and I've been waiting for such a device from Apple. That's a no brainer.

FREAKING AWESOME! FINALLY!

If only it would work with a stylus then it would make a great retouching tool, but I get the feeling all this will do is offer multi-touch gestures to desktop users.

I'm guessing it's the exact same size as a bluetooth Apple keyboard (in depth), so that side-by-side it looks like an extension of your keyboard.

It would be neat if it could also be a display at the same time, for context-sensitive controls.

Given the date -could this be a prototype that just didn't make the final cut?

I can't imagine how this will be anything incredible, unless it can replace the precision of a Wacom and/or provide a better mouse experience than the MS Intellitrackball with 5 buttons and scroll wheel... which hasn't been made for years now (another sign of MS's total lack of intelligence).

Just thinking out loud, I wonder if this pad could simulate a keyboard, and here's what I mean: a lot of us don't actually look at the keyboard while typing. I'm picturing a scenario where your two index fingers are somehow centered on this pad - just as the letters "f" and "j" have a raised feel so you can blindly find them - and once centered, you type as you normally would, and this pad "knows" what you are typing based on the approximate location of your taps alongside the corrective spelling like on the iPhone. Just a thought.

I've been waiting for this product forever. I've not wanted to use a mouse since the first multi-touch pads came out a few years ago. Bring it on!

how do you use this?

so, are we supposed to have this thing in front of the keyboard? seems to be that's going to be a bit in the way...besides, I am looking around at people in the office...50% of them have something already between themselves and their keyboard...

still, I love the multi touch trackpad on the MBP, let's see...

When I got my MBP back in late 2008 when they introduced their current gen trackpads I thought almost immediately that I would love to see something like it for the desktop. IMO i prefer the glass trackpad to a mouse in almost any situation, it scrolls so smoothly, I can click anywhere, right click just as easy and it has super easy access to exposé. If this turns out to be Legit i'll get one as soon as they appear in the store

Is it me.... I can't think of anything this would be any good for...?

You can't use it to replace your keyboard as it's not got a display on it to show the keyboard...

Ok, graphic artists may like it if it can be used as a graphics tablet...

But, other than that... Sorry, perhaps it's just me... :(

Good thing I'm ambidextrous so I can put this thing to the left of the keyboard and keep the mouse on the right. Right-handed people who want to use both will have to reach a long way for the mouse...
