Considering the fiasco that was Airpower, I'm not really surprised by this. As big of an Apple fan as I am, I've never actually purchased one of their accessories - they're almost always overpriced, under-featured (or in this case, literally under-powered), and often times not even built that well. I'm sure the margins on their accessories are crazy high, but I have to wonder how many people actually buy these accessories when you can get similar products that are just as good, if not better, for a lot less money.

How is this getting ridiculous?
The 20 W brick lets a regular individual magsafe charger charge your phone at 15 W.
add an Apple Watch puck taking some of that juice, and it’s not gonna get the full 15 W on the other side. This is just obvious stuff
How is it obvious that it can't render the full 15 W even when combined with a 27 W (or higher) charger?

Cheers Apple. I bought an extra 20W charger when I got the MagSafe cable for use with the future Duo - as this was the recommended charger.

You now say I need a 27W charger.

Never mind, I can just go and exchange it for a 27W one.

Oh wait you don’t make one.

What’s going on!
I guess they mean the iPad charger or the one from MBAs or MBPs

So... 205€ (150€ for this and 55€ for the 30W adaptor from Apple) to charge my phone and Apple watch at reduced watt? Nice.

Can't wait for them to get rid of the lightning port too. With the cable quality Apple offers and with how the cable is not removable on those 45€ MagSafe pucks I'll be able to buy a whole new one when the cable eventually breaks rather than just replacing the lighting cable (which should have been USB C instead for years). Love it!

This is a non-issue. That is, if it’s a sufficiently convenient product in terms of its design and ergonomics, which it appears to be. 10 watts or so is still solid and the technical constraints make sense. People will become picky pissants over anything. It still seems like a neat product.

Magsafe Duo is a great concept by design, it’s literally the only Magsafe accessory I would buy. It’s just priced way too high, and apparent limitations make it even worse purchase. More like Apple sells us a beta testing product at a full price.

I would pay $79 for this (with no brick included) or $99 (with the brick). Not any single more dime.

So who’s now defending Apple saying we don’t need 15W charging?

They had a nice thing in place, a standard charger in-box and powerful chargers to purchase separately. They didn’t have to complicate things so much. I hope they realise it and not just try to milk customers and waste everyone’s time with this.

What’s your threshold at which you will call this for what it really is?

I'd be more concerned about sustained power output from these wireless chargers than peak power output, especially now there are charging optimisation algorithms on devices that cause the power delivery to fluctuate according to usage patterns.

I was really interested in this product and was all set to buy one… until Apple decided to charge NZ$249 for it.

And not include a power brick.

And use flimsy rubber seams in the fold points that will probably fail after a year.

And charge at only 11 Watts on a 20 Watt charger, when I could just plug in the USB-C cable that came with the iPhone and charge it at (does complex mathematics)… 20 Watts.

Aside from all that, the MagSafe Duo charger looks like Apple’s biggest hit of 2020.

Guys you’re all holding it wrong! Rather than seeing how expensive the Duo is you should feel blessed by how cheap the regular MagSafe charger is! But for those who are buying the Duo, Apple provides free rose tinted spectacles 👌🏻

I'm going to dissent from most of the posts here and predict that this will be a popular accessory. The magnets ensure a reliable charge (as opposed to most wireless chargers) and the watch half permits nightstand mode or flat charging at the user's option -- a useful and surprisingly rare feature. Most users will be using this at night, so the lower charging speed will be plenty fast enough.

That said, I'm concerned about the environmental impact of chargers that lose so much power (compared to plug-in solutions). Is anyone aware of solid research on that issue?
I agree with both your points. I plan on buying a Duo as soon as it is available. I even have a couple 30 Watt chargers lying around. The convenience for travel (when we can do that again) is a big selling point.

How is it more convenient than getting a charger with two ports (such as this one or one of the hundred other GaN chargers - https://www.amazon.com/Charger-RAVP...1&keywords=ravpower+65w&qid=1605686637&sr=8-3). 30odd dollars. You plug in your existing Apple Watch charger in one port, plug in your Magsafe charger in the other. Costs 1/2 to 1/3 of the Apple solution and does not take any more space than buying an Apple Charger with one port, connecting this plastic monstrosity to it and have slower charging for 3-4x the price.
