Yeah, in order for this to make sense, it has to offer something over using these apps on a Mac. What would actually be better, more productive, more efficient?

Just because I can't imagine it doesn't mean it won't happen, but all these rumors sure make it sound like it's just a gimmick.

I am so skeptical about this whole headset thing, so bear that in mind when I say this, but as a music writer/composer who oftentimes works alone, the thought of having the recording/scoring interface right in front of me all the time is certainly intriguing and for some time has been one use case I could see this being interesting for if it worked well. If it was a bit like Logic Remote on steroids, with the ability to show lyrics per se while I’m tracking something and also controlling logic while I’m 20 feet from my Mac playing guitar in front of multiple mics…could be interesting.

But it’d have to be really great or I’d be more likely to throw the goggles at the wall in a fit of frustration.

Given that AirPlay barely works these days, my expectations for Apple getting the software and handoff experience right on something like this are astronomically low.

Maybe in ten years…

This solves the problem of screen space. I use both Logic and FCP. and each of these apps really needs a dual 27" screen. Logic especially could use a "hands-on" device.

Black Magic sells a competing system called "Resolve". They give away the software because many professional users prefer a "hands-on" hardware interface and dislike the on-screen fake hardware. AR Goggles sounds like a third option.

Blackmagic is like Apple, they make their money by selling hardware so giving away their software to people like me is a way to sell their hardware. They sell some low-end desktop systems and some very high-end consoles.

Perhaps Apple's "cheap" $5,000 goggles can replace the very expensive Blackmack console in the photo below? If the AR goggles can replace this environment they will be instantly cost-justified.

Why on earth are you stuck on dual 27” screens for either app in the first place?!

If you mean Apple’s 5K 27” for colour accuracy ok makes sense for FCP but it doesn’t in anyway hold baring for use with Logic Pro!
 
This supports another theory I had that Apple's long-term goal is to nix support for screens/monitors altogether and force/utilize THIS as their future display source once it is mature enough (think long-long-long term, not tomorrow).
This would be a good way for Apple to never sell another computer. I’m sorry that my original reply seemed snarky, but I think there in zero chance of this.

iOS 16 introduced this super annoying ever persistent modal pop-up when bookmarking iOS Stock news.

When bookmarking iOS Stock News, I think after 3x alerting to user where it’ll be saved is more than enough. Using a modal pop-up that takes almost 3 seconds to disappear is beyond annoying. After 3x, a user will KNOW where to find the article, and that it’s in the NEWS app, since simply that’s the ONLY place it CAN go. Enough is enough with modal pop-ups in iOS!

Apple announced FCP and Logic Pro for iPad today, hence this rumor.
Logic Pro on an iPad is a joke. Real production needs real ports for real instruments and real microphones. Not to mention the smaller the screen, the harder it is to do the real thing. And it's only by subscriotion? What the Duck are these idiots injecting?!?
 
As soon as I read this I wondered how easy it is to zoom in and out of my timeline for precise edits.

I'm an old man - I'd rather just use a 42" monitor or something for FCP.

What I find comical is the AR headset promise in various applications has been flaunted in Hollywood movies since the 90’s - 30hrs ago! Of course it was VR yet essentially the same except AR allows you to still see and interact real time in the real world.

The Lawnmower Man 1992: VPL was the company that had real working headsets used in the movie. (VR)

Disclosure 1994 : briefly showing file system and permissions access of a computer using VR.

Cultured Code 2020 : pure AR concepts actually more modern and the use of greyscale text and vectors for UI seems better than flooded rich colour which could be very distracting unless of course viewing photos and videos.

In any real application having the right visual Scale and Depth for each application and visual representation is key to get the right scope of what the end user is intended to use for any said application.

The killer app(a) in any AR headset coming to market will be:
As mentioned above visual representation of any app in terms of scale and depth,
Navigation input: must be intuitive and fast with fine motor controls,
Data input must be discreet and efficient (to his will come in time; ASL matches this beyond anything else in my opinion),
And finally state aware Ui elements: the software will need to be aware of when to present basic information muting all other consumption & presentation and when other use are spatially abs locationally aware.

I don't see the useful application of running FCP in a virtual environment because you're still working in 2D. It would ultimately be no different than editing on a flat monitor panel (aside from dramatically increasing the poor editor's eye strain.). VR has lots of exciting potential for creatives, but only if you are dealing with some type of 3D space.
I don't see why a final output being in 2D would preclude the usefulness of having a 3D workspace. If you're using a keyboard and/or other hardware controller, you are already working in a 3D space.

Not directly related to video editing, but VR input is great for emulating airbrushing/spray painting, because of the 6-axis control that can't be replicated with a stylus.

Honestly, I can't see this happening EVER, even if good AR glasses ever become a thing. More than one people need to see a display a lot of the time, and I don't see how this can be solved without a clunky software solution.

Considering what all other brands have done with VR/AR so far, I completely get the apathy towards another new headset.

But to me, everything is pointing towards this product doing for the personal computer market what iPhones did for smartphones back in the day.

No, I'm not convinced Apple can pull it off.

But whether Apple fails or succeeds, I guarantee you the sum of what this headset offers is something distinctly different compared to what the rest of the market offers.

Apple can't rival the giants of video streaming and video games with Arcade or TV+ and surely won't launch a product that relies on the appeal of its movies, TV-shows, and AAA video game content to offer enough value to warrant buying this headset.

My best bet is that Apple is decidedly focusing on making something that replaces our current desktop computing experience, creating user and device interface that will superceed the mouse and keyboard in both speed and precision.

Obviously, just speculation.

But, conversely, if this is indeed just some sort of 1/1 version of MacOS/iPadsOS but in VR/AR and the UI and device interface doesn't rival keyboard and mouse then it's DOA.

Are we really suggesting Apple has the audacity to give us what equates to a battery powered Oculus Rift running MacOS/iPadOS with the same shaky gesture interactions every other brand has given us.. just to let us stream new VR special editions of TV+ and gaming content, type on a floating keyboard in Excel?

I'm not.

The headset is going to be.. something new and unique to the VR/AR category.

I agree I think he should offer at least a slither of proof “protecting sources” no doubt lol
 
Imagine being able to just ”place“ sound sources around you when mixing it for Dolby Atmos. Not that you can’t do it on a monitor, it will give you more realism though.
That's the thing, it's simulated reality/spatial rendering - whether it's done on a monitor or in VR, the result is the same.

Don't you need studio quality headphones to do this kind of work properly? The audio quality seems like a limiting factor with the headset. I work in visual arts and while I agree the idea is intriguing, I somehow doubt the VR headset will be as well calibrated and adjustable as a high end monitor.

Wow, I remember watching the Lawnmower Man when I was a kid at the movies, and my mind got wrecked by how awesome it seemed. Then I remember a surge in VR cafe type businesses which quickly fell by the wayside.

Again, putting on my old man hat here - I just cannot fathom how VR would fit into my life/workflow.
