This reeks of the posters Apple used to have to help you make a computer buying choice right before Jobs came back. They need to go back to basics. All iPads should be the same equipment with the only difference being size. Done.
iPad Pro, iPad Air, cheap garbage iPad. That’s all the lineup needs to be. With all supporting Apple Pencil 2 and USB C.

The 1st Gen Pencil has always included a double dongle, it was female to female lightning before

As someone who owned the 1st gen Pencil and iPad Pro, it wasn’t the same thing. That was just an adapter, and lived in the box for the vast majority of people because we would just charge the Pencil using the iPad.

This is a double dongle you need to do the most basic task: charge the Pencil off the iPad.

I owned one as well and I only used the adapter since I didn't like the thought of my 12.9" iPad snapping the male lighting right off if it fell. My point was more that the adapter isn't new, but I recognize your point that it's mandatory here.

iPad “Complete” 😁

But Apple didn’t grow when they had multiple options. They did the opposite. It was only when they reduced their offerings and said this is who we are, and this is what we do, did they have the success we have come to know.

While you might think this is genius, this lineup is confusing to 99% (if not more) of Apple’s customer base. Then add-in the inventory management required, the warehousing required, the marketing required, the supply chain management required, the dongle management required…

It’s like shooting yourself in the foot and saying, “See I’m smart, if I shot myself in the head I would be dead right now.”

This thread is full of people seeming to think they are smarter than Apple about this topic. By all means people, contact Apple, get a lucrative consulting gig, and straighten out the terrible mistake they have made. If you know better, go fix Apple.

Anyone who follows my posts know I'm no fanboy. But I think Apple leadership is smart enough to make the right mix of products to achieve their revenue goals. If something doesn't make sense to achieve those goals, I'm confident they would cut the product. We've seen recent examples of products- even popular ones like original HomePod and iMac 27"- getting culled because they were not hitting Apple revenue/profit margin targets. They very tangibly prove they are willing to kill products that disappoint or are not lucrative enough.

This mix- confusing or not to "99% (if not more)" is what they believe they need to offer to achieve what will probably be another quarter(s) of "record revenue." All of the armchair marketers that are smarter than Apple in this thread should go take over Apple and fix this awful situation.

Else, until their dumb mistakes start showing up in revenue shortcomings, it appears that what they are doing is working very well in the measure that matters most to them and their stockholders.

I fully grasp the consumer desire for simplified product lines. But Apple is a GIGANTIC company now. It would likely be hard to keep up with their own revenue records if they operated like it was 1997-2003 or so again. Take that to an extreme and that would kill off iPhone, iPad and Watch entirely... so they can be just a computer company... or computer + iPod company (with much simpler product mix).

Yes, I also grasp that many of "us" are wanting a single iPhone option and a single iPad option, etc. but Apple has grown way beyond that yielding as much revenue. There are not 4 new iPhone options this year because Apple knows everyone is going to buy the one best choice and ignore the other 3. They are all the best choice for some slice of the total iphone market.

So what is a better buy?

2021 9th Gen iPad for $269

or

2018 iPad Pro for $350(ebay)/$469(apple refurb)

None of which are worth upgrading to if you bought an iPad in the last 3 years.
Yeah, totally agree. I have a four year old ipad pro, and I suppose I’d like the screen on the new one better, but this is fine. I do film editing in Luma Fusion and it is totally fast enough. Better camera? I wouldn’t turn it down, but I so seldom take any pictures with my ipad. This is a weird line up. Very Tim Cook, not very Steve Jobs.

It takes one whistleblower to show everyone these manifestations of iPads is made possible by recycling old parts and converting them into the new options that are made available to you all today. The added pricetag “makes” you think this is not possible. Remember: 1. Whistleblower.

Remember it is for the good of the environment why destroy these materials.

And according to the loopholes in the law and regulations, it’s true.

Gone are the time of simplicity and knowing you picked a great, if not, the best product whatever you chose at Apple.

Not are you just being thrown different variations, you even need to read the fineprint.

I was considering getting an iPad this year for basic stuff but with enough storage to hold movies and TV shows for travel and generally future-proof the thing, so higher option it is.

iPad 9th Gen. £549 for 256GB
iPad 10th Gen £679 for 256GB
iPad Mini £749 for 256GB

In the middle of a massive cost of living crisis. Apple thanks, but most certainly no thanks. Read the room.

I don't think a whistleblower is needed for anyone to know that Apple is recycling old design parts and putting a new chip inside it. Not any type of big mystery being solved there.

I just got a 2018 iPad Pro for $250 on eBay and couldn’t be happier with it. I vastly prefer Face ID over Touch ID on the iPad, and ProMotion is a joy. As long as you find one in good shape and with life left on the battery, the 2018 is really a treat.
