you must be rich if you have mac computer(s) for gaming.
Actually the full over time cost of an iMac (taking into account lifespan of the iMac 5-6 years for me, lower power consumption etc etc) makes the iMac not as expensive over time as you think. And a nice resale value helps too.

When more then 3/4 of your companies revenue is from "iCrap", it doesn't take a genius to figure out why it's front page news.

Apple got that memo and went from "Apple Computers" to 'Apple". MacRumors never got that memo and insist they want their website name/brand to stay MacRumors. Not saying if that's a good or bad thing. Just stating the facts.

As and aside Apple still make computers. The iPad and iPhone are portable computers with touch screen and a phone attached (for the iPhone). But I think it's still to early for most people to think of an iPad as a PC. The iPad IS as PC and I think if a few years that will come to be one of the standard ways people consume and even create content.

This could be the very last generation for the ol' Mac Pro as a standalone desktop device. As internet bandwidth improves expect to see uber-thin clients off-shoring cpu work to data centers.

We work & play under iClouds with Thunderbolts.
Decent internet bandwidth worldwide will not happen anytime soon. Not enough cable infrastructure plus the ISP's wanting to keep the cost per GB bandwidth very high to milk the customers will keep your "internet bandwidth improving" a idea that will only come a long time in the future. I think in 20 years the situation will improve possibly.

Nothing anyone in here can or should buy. More crying over nothing.

What? I've got 4 dual E5 v2 Xeon workstations in my studio running right now. Likely to order at least 10 more. Transitioning from Mac.

No crying here. Just getting the tools we need.

Also, how about those skilled SC2 players (or other professional and competitive gamers) that make 100k a year PLAYING GAMES on high end rigs are doing it wrong.

Very few people can do that. And the majority who do are Korean. And I would assume most of those people are using custom gaming rigs built for the best fps and least game lag. For those people a smoother more responsive game means much more than any flashy bells and whistles ultra resolution has.

Also a thing, I think about a lot. Upgrading bandwidth supply is an enormous undertaking that will take billions and billions, and there is the question, upgrade to what capacity? Every time upgrades are undertaken, by the time the massive projects are completed, the by then increased demand is already outstripping supply again.

With the explosive growth internet usage is currently experiencing with handheld computing devices, and the even greater coming growth with video streaming from everywhere to anywhere, as well as the coming 4K flavor of that, in addition to cloud computing, where sooner or later all our files will be stored off-site, for anywhere, anytime access, rather than local storage, coupled with an unprecedented growth in the developing world, bandwidth supply is going to be behind the demand curve for the foreseeable future.

To alleviate ever-worsening bottlenecks, it will take radical and visionary action at the highest levels to secure acceptable levels of available bandwidth for our ever-increasing 'thirst for knowledge' and 'need for speed'.

come to think of it...yeah makes sense.

What else would two GPU's used for if not gaming?:confused::confused:

if you're using openCL based apps then at least one of the GPUs will be used for the same stuff a CPU would be used for.. only way faster.

IP over Thunderbolt will take a piss on your render farm.

Post of the week here.

not quite.. i'm pretty sure IP over thunderbolt isn't possible at this time..

(well, i definitely think it's possible but you can't do it with osx right now.. i haven't been closely following mavericks development so maybe this capability has been hooked up in the beta OS?)

Please do not take this as an insult, I'm just observing, but are you a youngster between age 12-15? I'm asking because if you don't know the answer to that question I'm wondering what type of computing do you do?

Have you looked on the mac app store? Top selling apps are always games. People don't buy macs anymore for productivity. They buy them to game on apparently.

The App Store! That's an awesome measure of the demographic of Mac users. It's certainly my first port of call for very expensive high end creative software.

I'm sure your boss has a nice facility. I don't see a lot of CEO's bitching about the new Mac Pro though.

I've got all 3 of those in a Mac Pro at work.

Specifically which internal audio interface? I don't know a single audio professional that isn't using an external audio interface.

and what are you doing? Speculating?

When I'm pointing out that we don't have any idea what it will cost, I'm just pointing out the facts.

Let me say it again, to be perfectly clear. We don't know what this will cost.

Next time, try not to belittle others you don't agree with in such a strong manner, it's obnoxious.

Oh, you poor thing. Let me fetch you your blankie and a warm cup of who gives a rat's ass.

I don't think Apple will ever be serious about a real "pro" model for servers.. for example, one latest super micro supports 1.5TB RAM, has multiple hot swap power supplies, 16 hot swap drive bays, remote server management,

http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/3U/6037/SSG-6037R-E1R16N.cfm

1. Dual socket R (LGA 2011) supports
Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600
2. Up to 1.5TB ECC DDR3, up to
1866MHz; 24x DIMM sockets
3. 3x PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots (FHFL) and
1x PCI-E 3.0 x8 slot (FHHL)
4. Intel® i350 GbE Controller; 4x ports
5. 16x Hot-swap 3.5" SAS2 (with LSI
expander) / SATA3 HDD Bays
6. Hardware RAID controller and JBOD
Expansion; RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60
7. Server remote management: IPMI 2.0
/ KVM over LAN / Media over LAN
8. 3x Heavy duty PWM fans
9. 920W Redundant Power Supplies
Platinum Level (94%)

Pro Tools HDX.

Agree.

Might be the That 70's Show marathon I started watching recently but... BURN!!!!!! :D

Seriously though, once OpenCL starts being utilised and the GPUs are handling what DSPs previously did, software synths and plug-ins are going to scream on the Mac Pro even more than they already will with 64bit plug-ins running on the new Xeons.

Pro Tools HDX.

You managed to fit one of these rack mount units inside your computer? How did you manage that? I'd love to see a picture.

Or did you somehow hack it to run the PCIe card without an interface box connected? Must be hard to mix without being able to hear any audio though.

Me said:

And now I can add I know an audio "professional" who is using an external audio interface but doesn't actually know what that is.

I've got 4 dual E5 v2 Xeon workstations in my studio running right now.

What model/manufacturer are those specifically? Just curious since availability still seems to be ramping up.

At least you're not signing your posts anymore.

Stop with this cloud nonsense. Nobody is doing professional work in any cloud. It may happen in the future, but I don't think that has anything to do with the current Mac Pro.
Since a big portion of your message is "shut up". No. I will keep posting content people want to read, about Macs, and whether I sign it or not is a matter of my own habit and momentary interest. Get over it. But at least I will not tell you to shut up. It would land on deaf ears.

There are some interesting aspects of the micro or nano MacPro. One is a colo candidate, a multi-unit or grid candidate, and the last one is an interesting media center for next gen stuff. Kinda sad to need a whole MacPro to run a few 4K consumer video displays, but that's what's happening in real life.

At least Apple is set to deliver in as much volume as the market will bear. It is also a slight upgrade as a content creation machine, but its forte is content delivery and data crunching.

Rocketman :D
