No matter how much I read about it, I can only think about disadvantages when compared to TouchID. Regarding convenience it's certainly a step backwards. And let's face (heh) it, this is all about convenience, security is not a serious matter here. Pretty disappointed they went in this direction.

Is there an article about this as I haven’t heard about it?

Techradars hands on

We've not been able to try it out in the demo area, but this is certainly something we want to test to see if it's a worthy replacement for Touch ID.

The demo we were shown was a little worrying, though. In the demo on stage the first phone failed, and when it was shown to us the person linked to the phone kept having to to turn the display off and on again to activate the system

Wired

Face ID, at least in the brief demos I got, worked one of two ways: amazingly fast or not at all. It won't work if your phone's flat on a table—you'll have to pick up and look at your phone every time you want to unlock it. I suspect a lot of people will just go back to having numerical passcodes.

Has anyone confirmed that Apple intended to do under-display touchID, but wasn't able to? This has been widely speculated, but I'm wondering if we know more at this point. It should be be pretty apparent a chip is missing or perhaps sensor. Qualcomm, Vivo, and Synaptics have been showcasing their technology since at least Dec of 2016. Apparently Samsung's S8 was intended to have this as well, and was forced to drop it because of some problem (who knows if that's cost or speed or what). Seems like the X should show signs of this, assuming they didn't go to production with an alternative board design.

Face ID Special Features

With the "attention aware" feature, the iPhone X knows when you're looking at it. Face ID will display notifications and messages on the Lock screen when you look at the iPhone X, it will keep the screen lit, and it will automatically lower the volume of an alarm or ringer when it knows your attention is on the iPhone X's display.

cool...

So many of my questions got answered by this article.

I’m an early adopter and I’m excited to trial the new phone and the new features.

Agree, should've swallowed their pride and put the finger print sensor on the back.

Personally to me this seems like an over-engineered solution. People are used to TouchID and it works. We will have to see if Face ID works as well as TouchID has proven to work over the past several years. I am skeptical to say the least.

maybe with all that scanning in your face 24/7 people are going to start getting wrinkle early in their lives, probably when they reach 30 they are going to look like 60, all these news are very cool but absolutely nothing about high sierra not even a new beta so we can have some fun testing what's new and what changed, i guess i have to wait till the 25

They should have added Touch ID to the power button too.

I disagree. That would made it a lot more difficult to reach, especially for the Plus models. Which means you have to use your thumb in most cases. One handed use to reach the power button would not be easily accessible, and Apple is about accessibility. Even trying that on my iPhone right now, is not an easy thing to do one-handed.

Both Wired and Techradar have said it is very hit and miss from what they saw in the hands on area.

David Pierce (Wired) said he thinks people will just go back to passcodes
Wow, that's bad news for Apple. FaceID is their big tech feature besides the screen. This has the potential to be terrible for them.

I immediately wondered about sunglasses which will impact almost everyone at some point. It would be kind of annoying to need to take your glasses off every time you need in your phone outside. Then again, there is always the passcode as a backup I suppose, but just a minor annoyance that isn't there with Touch ID.

Touch ID isn't perfect, but touch ID today is much better than it was when initially released. I am assuming it will be the same with facial recognition. It will be much better 2-3 years from now and likely spotty for now.

The perfect world would be BOTH why NOT have touchID AND FaceID... seems like the future is both.

That’s great but most people prefer will prefer Touch ID.
Not me.. touch id has been a pain for me.. my hands are sweaty and the home button gets dirty real quik and as a result it wont recognize my finger print.. more ofthen than not i have to resort to polishing the button before it works. Or just use password .

Also if my hand are wetter than a certain amount the touch id does not work.

So all in all i am for face id.. bigtime.

If someone knocks you unconscious or attempts to unlock your iPhone X with your face while you're sleeping, it's not going to work.

As mentioned above, you need to look at your iPhone for Face ID to grant access to your device.

Well then. Now I'm hoping those idiots who annually purchase the newly-released iPhone and instantly subject it to a Drop Test / Will-it-bend / Will-it-blend / How-Waterproof-is-Waterproof conditions in the pursuit of a click-baity YouTube video will accept this year's challenge.

I'll believe it when I see it. An incorrect scan once a week is enough of a convenience for me to never purchase.

Touch ID is far from perfect and after 4 years still fails at times.

That’s great but most people prefer will prefer Touch ID.

Most people will prefer the convenience of Face ID

The more I read about it I can only think of the advantages of Face ID compared to Touch ID. It’s a significant step forwards for convenience.

And let’s face it, this is a step up in security as well.

If they had the fingerprint reader embedded in the display (like the original plan) it would have been a better user experience. 1 step for Apple Pay with fingerprint scanner, not 2 (Authentication then power button twice) is the perfect example. JMHO...

This will get alot of people as a get through, but Apple, please don't stop getting the fingerprint scanner working through the display for next years iPhones.
Again, just wondering if there has been any confirmation that under the display finger print tech was planned. It sure seems like it, and we know it's the hot thing of the moment in the mobile world, but just wanting to nail this down.
