Ok, let me see if I get this straight on the monthly vs yearly billing.

I'm currently on the 20gb plan + 5gb free for $40. As long as I stay on this plan my billing stays yearly but at the reduced iCloud pricing. But if at any moment I upgrade or downgrade the billing switches to monthly with no way to revert.

Am I right on this?

My original goal was the 200gb new option for $3.99 month which was only $8 more than I had already paid. I thought it was going to switch me over automatically.

To reiterate:

Last month I was paying $8.25/mo for 100GB on Dropbox.
Last month I was paying $3.33/mo for 25GB on iCloud.

This month I'm paying $8.25/mo for 1024GB on Dropbox.
This month I'm paying $3.99/mo for 200GB on iCloud.

Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Perspective people!

I agree, but if you wanted 1024GB on iCloud it would cost 19.99. That's a big difference and shows that apple hasn't lost the art of sticking it to their customers.

Does any one know if the "family" shares this data, I thought I remember apple saying that it did in the iOS 8 keynote but can't find it on their site.

200gb for my wife and I is a steal but if we can't share it I'll have to get two smaller amounts.

Before I go and get rid of my OneDrive storage, I need to know whether I can share links to files with iCloud Drive. If not, there's really no point in paying for extra storage, the other cloud services would still have much more value.

Exactly. If I could do this one thing, I wouldn’t be so conflicted about which storage option to invest in.

Hey guys...if you don't like the price for the storage options, don't pay for them. Apple isn't forcing any of you to pay for it. Continue using the service you think is superior, and shut up. I mean that's really all that needs to be said.

I'm going to continue using Mega, gives you 50GB free, and I'll also use my 5GB free iCloud storage and MAYBE the 99¢ plan. No complaints here.

*Edit* I do have one question. From what I see, there's no option to pay once. Like instead of 99¢ a month, can you instead pay $11.88 a year? 1 yearly transaction is better for me than 12.

Pretty sure I know the answer to this already, but when Family Sharing is enabled, does the additional iCloud storage get shared amongst all linked accounts?

Probably answered, but I just checked, and it looks like no. :(

As I just said, I tried it, and it doesn't show up on another account that is in my family plan. bummer!!

And of course apple does their usual thing with pricing outside of US.
Notice that the only thing they did for European prices was to just exchange the dollar sign with a euro sign... This is just unacceptable!!!

Has anyone tried to put their entire iPhoto library on iCloud storage? Does it work well? Looking for an alternative to backing it up on S3...

dropbox camera upload works great! if you happen to have more free space than the 2GB baseline, it's really useful for sharing pictures across different devices (i don't know if you can set it up for multiple devices, but i think so, why not?)

Can I ask a stupid question they doesn't seem to be clear anywhere on this? Any document as in movies/music? Would it potentially be a storage in the cloud of say 1tb worth of music or movies you can stream from your Idivice maybe replacing iTunes Match?

That's a great question. I currently have a Time Capsule but would like to get rid of it for some sort of cloud backup. I've been considering Backblaze, but it'd be great if I could just consolidate that with my other cloud storage needs. If iCloud Drive doesn't suck (I still have terrible memories of Mobile Me's iDrive), I will probably replace Dropbox with iCloud. Adding backup, even if it requires me to move up a tier or two in storage, would be great and easier to manage.

But there's also still the problem that iCloud accounts are still siloed, they are tied to your iCloud account and not sharable. That means I need a second account (probably with a lot of storage that will never be used) for my wife's data. Would be nice if there were shared storage ("family plan" or whatever).

Might I recommend Arq ( http://www.haystacksoftware.com/arq/ )? It's like a time machine for the cloud, and unlike Backblaze, Crashplan etc isn't linked to one particular cloud storage service. It currently supports Google Drive and Amazon S3/Glacier, your own SFTP server and a few other options. I'd be very surprised if iCloud Drive support wasn't coming up soon given the developer's Apple focus.

I would prefer $1 for 100GB (sounds even better for marketing) but I think this is not a crazy plan. Will I pay for it? Not sure, yet. However, I think it is better to pay a little for a service that is not based on giving away all your privacy, and as far as I can see nobody is under any obligation to pay for this, if you are happy with Box, or Dropbox, or Google Drive, by all means go for it.

Don't forget you can get iTunes vouchers for less than their iTunes values so you can potentially knock 20% off these prices if you go down that route.

I'm not seeing a compelling reason to switch from DropBox yet, especially now I have 1TB there for less than half of what Apple wants to charge. It's multiplatform, and I've been using their service for years with no issues, so there is an element of trust. However I'm optimistic that in time it may be worth switching, just not yet.

I have 50 GB on Skydrive, 50 GB on MEGA, 50 GB on Box, and 25 or so GB on other services and I don't pay a dime.

I pay attention when they have specials, 5 GB here, 1 Gb there. IT all adds up. Plus earn more for referrals. We all have 12 email addresses. Refer yourself to add to your current account GB count using each of your emails.

Start with MEGA - Thats 50 GB just for reading this post.

Thanks for the info. I just signed up for Mega.

The problem is that Dropbox slashed their prices before iCloud Drive went into public use. Not even like a month ago Dropbox was charging $200 for 200gb. So I saw the Apple announcement of the 200gb being WAAAAAY cheaper and was like wow they are gonna put Dropbox out of business. Especially since it will work on Windows as well.

Now I saw $99 for a year of 1TB on Dropbox and I'm just like...crap. Oh well. I don't know if I'll go with Apple on this one. Ya know? I could go with half the storage space for the same price, but why?

That's it I'm moving back to MobileMe! Who's with me?! :roll eyes:

All jokes aside is there gonna be an app for this on the iPhone. It looked like they had an app one time when they announced it for iOS.

Image

thats not a stand alone app. thats the interface which opens when you try to gain access to a file within a supported app

Until I don't get my dedicated iCloud app on iOS devices (like Dropbox and OneDrive), i am not interested. I hate this per app integration policy.

Time Machine will backup iCloud Drive on yosemite. And time machine supports backing up to multiple locations, one of these could be a USB drive that you take with you when you leave the house/office (offsite backup) or a mac mini Time Machine server in a datacenter. I think this answers your question?

I believe your first sentence answers my question. I already have the Time Capsule that stores all my Time Machine backups locally so if I can configure it to also back up to iCloud Drive, then I am all set. Now I just need to upgrade to a higher tier data storage size. Thanks for the info.

iCloud is dumb. You can't upload what you want it's just for backups and predetermined crap on your iPhone. I'm sticking with Dropbox that is linked to iFile on my iPhone. It's free and I can put what I want and delete what I want from it.

I'll keep using Dropbox for now. Got 50GB for free for signing in with some Android device last year and it syncs well with Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
