I think a lot of people will default to the iPhone 8 ... because the X is too pricy.

Still at these prices I'm seriously reconsidering an Android phone.
The only Androids that are competitive
are similarly-priced Samsung models.

Oddly I went from a 5" phone that had lots of room to a 4" phone and well... a lot of people I talk to really like the 4" phone, mainly cause they can use it one handed. The SE is as powerful as the 6S so the differences are minor (I think resolution is one), but great. Actually, I like the smaller size. I can text in one hand while holding my pug puppy when she's out on her walks.
I hear you; I went from the 5S to 6S, and was worried about the larger form factor, mostly because I always carry my phone in my pocket. It is definitely harder for me to operate one handed, however my aging eyes do appreciate the larger screen.

But I don't think I'd want anything larger so maybe even the X is too large for me. I'll have to try it out in person.

I'm not price sensitive.
I bought an Essential PH-1 but plan to return it for the X.
The X is to lure people like me away from Android. With no X, I would not even be thinking of jumping ship.
The design of the X with no home button and a 5.8" screen in a compact package is what got me.
The Essential PH-1 is to Android as the X is to the iPhone.
These are the only two phones I have looked at.
The iPhone wins on camera, storage and case options.
If the Essential had accessory support I wouldn't be thinking of sending it back.

Essential phone is a new kid on the block so you shouldn't expect it to have all the bells and whitles other phones might enjoy.

The PH-1 isn't the phone to judge an Android phone simply because it's got a stock version of the OS. Most of what you wrote here are your opinions.

Apple is being completely bailed out by the US carriers and AUP - imagine if these new phones required $700+ upfront investment - their sales would take nose dive.
re: carriers, I definitely wouldn't say "bailed out" as if they're acting benevolently and doing Apple some sort of favor... they'll gladly eat $20 or $30 in interest in exchange for the monthly service charge that will bring them $50*24 in revenue--which marginally costs them very little to provide.

Similarly, the AUP costs Apple very little to operate--and brings in billions in revenue.

For those complaining about price, how about keeping your phone for more than a year, and saving up for the next phone you want / need?

iPhones are not obsolete in a year.
No but the battery’s are f’d in just over a year. My 6S+ for me does everything I want and runs iOS11 fantastically but the battery is screwed it’s currently reporting a capacity of 2300mah out of 2750mah but on some days it has read as low as 1800mah.

Yesterday I enabled low power mode at 20% and literally watched 8% battery just drop off in 5 minutes by scrolling my Twitter timeline.

So in May when I am due an upgrade I imagine the battery will be even more f’d and will literally force me to upgrade even if the phone itself is still working well.

Because 20 years ago Steve Jobs came back and pared down product lines in a much different situation so now in 2017 that obviously means that options are bad. No one is really sure why this is true but it's Apple lore so you have to just accept it.

Having both the 6s and the 7 seems a bit redundant. Almost like they got some extra stock they need to clear out.

Probably a temporary situation. The X is delayed 6 weeks and is likely to be in short supply until 2018. Apple will quietly drop the 6s and will relegate the SE to emerging markets.

6S is probably being kept until they run out of the stock in the channel + components.

These ARE computers... don't be fooled with the name iPhone.

True. Though these computers can be had for $50 upwards. When a phone costs as much and more than an apple laptop, one can question the pricing on a device most people upgrade each year

Sorry Apple, I make damn good money but I'm out. Your greediness has come around to bite you. Will use my 7 until it dies....Over and out.
Boy I really try to resist being snarky... that said, if a couple hundred bucks is the straw that breaks the camel's back, it might be time to hit your boss up for a 10¢/hr raise so you can cover the step up to the new tier. (I assume making "damn good money" means you could afford the 8, but that you only want the most expensive flagship.)

I love Apple but they are pushing people to far with their pricing. £200 for AppleCare is just crazy making the the cost of a 256gb X £1350.
iPads are gone up in price as well. I think that people just won't buy in the quantities expected for the new phones and stockholders and analysts will start running around like headless chickens and just maybe Apple might realize that there is a limit as to how far people will go

Seriously considering ordering the 6S to replace my current 6S. What has this world come to when getting the two year old model is the best option?
Hah, consider yourself lucky then!

Look at the Mac Mini!

WOW, iPhone X in Canada is $1,319.00 + 15% HST = $1,517.00 and that does not include AppleCare. I guess at this price I'm out.

Sounds great, make sure to buy one every year, ok?

And don't forget your family, iPhone is the perfect gift!

Heh, well to be honest, all kidding aside I'm glad they are doing this.
Just like with an alcoholic: the chance of betterment is much higher once you've reached rock bottom.

Still highly illegal. You are a barbarian, unfit for civilized society. Put down your phone while operating your automobile, please.

Calm your tits. Such misplaced anger and unnecessary name calling. Uber, Lyft, delivery services, EMS, law enforcement, the list goes on relies on mobile devices while on the road. While there are some solutions to keeping eyes on road/hands on wheel (heads up display, voice commands, CarPlay, bluetooth) physical input will always take attention away and in those cases you pull over or use best judgement that hopefully involves others not waiting/moving around you.

I'm tempted to get iPhone 8, because clearly it will be the LAST iPhone with the built-in TouchID home button, which is mature, perfected and refined technology.

The FaceID is clearly not perfected and refined technology. Federighi demonstrated that. Maybe it will be in 2 or 3 years.

But is the iPhone 8 that much different (for the price) compared to the iPhone 7? On the exterior they look identical. Even the camera is the same? Or should I just go with the iPhone 7 and save some money? Is there a side by side comparison of features between 7 and 8?

I'm still rocking a lovely 6S.

Reason to prefer iphone 8 vs 7. Caméra. You take much photo with the phone, it can be worth the price difference.

Eventually they got a bit more battery last time than the 7 but to be honest having moved last year from a 6 to 7+, I saw two improvements, better battery, a key point to me and the dual lenses as the portrait feature is gorgeous.

Otherwise all my small games still works at full speed on the phone so sorry CPU or GPS perfect are not anymore a reason to switch (in my honest opinion) it would made sense if you have VR headset for the phone but as there are not...

So.... iPhone SE X?
Is it intentional or....

I doubt they will name it that way

Please please please please let there be many many many many iPhone X's. So many available that I can purchase one on launch day :)

At this price point you won’t even need to camp by your Apple store. Just wake up normally on a launch day, have an extended breakfast and stroll casually to your nearest store. ;)

I am also thinking of upgrading from SE, mostly for a bigger screen. Apple has a comparison tool between iPhones on their website (iPhone section). The major differences between 7 & 8 seem to be:

1) better camera for 8;
2) wireless charging for 8;
3) true tone display tech for 8;
4) 8 starts at 64 GB, 7 - at 32.

For me, personally, true tone is the only appealing thing over 7, but I still wonder if it is worth an extra 150$.

Buy only what you can afford. Either way, you get a great device.
What a stupid point of view. You could say the same if Apple released a $2000 iPhone or a $3000 iPhone. The thing is Apple shouldn't preach that the iPhone "has changed the world", then put the flagship price up. Cheers Apple.

I'm not so sure, there's plenty of profit in a $449 6S that's already had a lot of its costs fully amortized, vs. an 8 at $699; it's not all about BOM. Apple knows exactly what all their costs are and can maximize their profit across the 16(?) price points that comprise the iPhone lineup.

If the actual mix sold differs too much from their forecasts, they may well decide to kill, for instance, the 6S, if they believe enough of those buyers would have moved up to a 7 that they're leaving money on the table.

It's not really all that simple though, and there are a lot of factors in maximizing profit: consumer demand (and changes thereto), product costs, price segmentation, costs of in-warranty repairs, many other life-cycle costs.

They seem to be able to do it just fine with android phones where there are a wide variety of similarly featured and priced models.
Who is this "They" you speak off. Unlike Apple there isn't one company that makes Android phones.
