I am really torn. I have been holding onto my 6 Plus and decided this is the year for me to upgrade. I throw out the X immediately because of the nature of my work, I want the bezels and the home button. Working my way down, is wireless charging and a one generation jump in processor speed worth the difference between the 8Plus and the 7Plus? For that matter, is water resistance and portrait mode worth the price jump between the 7Plus and 6Plus?

TL;DR, if you don't care about the headphone jack, imo the 7 is probably the sweet spot for now.

That is the conclusion I am drawing. I don't care about the lack of headphone jack, but better camera and water resistance are big plusses.

You can buy a car for $1,400?

Yes, many teenagers first cars are around a thousand dollars,

But for you ill stick my free apple sticker on the front and charge you 80 thousand ;-)

Actually, a friend of mine sold a car years ago. He actually sold it for much more than it was worth and we suspected the individual he sold it to had no value of money lol FYI, he said the person was wearing an apple watch. Easy money :)

I currently use a 7, which I feel is a bit of a downgrade compared to my old 6S. People like to dismiss the lack of headphone jack, but I miss it. Bluetooth is expensive and often unreliable. Lightning port earbuds are not widely available and overly expensive.

The iPhone X is ugly and expensive. The iPhone 8 looks basically the same as my iPhone 7. Not seeing that I gain much by upgrading aside from processing power and better cameras... two areas where I have no complaints with my 7. Seriously, what is the gotta have feature?

I suspect iOS 11 will slow down a lot of older phones in hopes of forcing an upgrade...but anyone with a 6s or better... why switch?

I grabbed a 128gb SE for my daughter. Her 5S has been on life support for months now.
She hates the size of the others, so this was an easy choice.

I'm sticking with my Note 8 for now.
I'll wait for the next update on the OLED iPhone X.

Yes I use a standard 3.5mm socket that Apple took away.
There is no adapter that has 3.5mm jack to connect phone to AUX and charge at the same time the last time i looked

Yes you can forget about faster upgrades because of planned obsolescence.
Apple did make one os upgrade faster because of all the complaints of crippled phones.

I was in the same camp as you, however now with wireless charging, Apple have created a solution. I listen with headphones at work so I'll just get a generic Qi charger stand, and use the lightning to 3.5mm DAC adapter. Job done.

It's listed at $969, but the majority don't pay that price.
My point was that the X at $999 isn't that much more, especially if you like IOS.

Other than the things you mentioned screen size. For the same size as your 7 you get the screen size of a plus (with the X) which I almost upgraded to from the 6 but I'm glad I waited.
For the upgrades from the 7 I guess it depends what kind of deals they offer.
last year going from the 6 to the 7 would have only been a hundred bucks or so..but i guess it depends on the deals/
Can't you use the lightning to 1/8" adapter on your 7 and use regular headphones?
Anyhoo, I'm getting the X! Go big or go home!!

I find it funny that people complain about Apple pricing. A few notes

MSRP of Samsung Note 8 - $929
MSRP of Samsung Galaxy S - $750

Now for everyone who cries that isn't how much they pay, you should know that through Sprint an iPhone X will cost me $550 (almost half of the cost you see listed) If you buy a Note 8 from Verizon you pay $40/month which comes to $960.

Feel free to complain about the iPhone price, but also realize you aren't moving to the Samsung top phones either. You are making an active choice to go for a second tier phone or third tier phone. At this point you have to look at the 6S which is equal to or better than most second tier phones. I will gladly pay the $550 for the iPhone X.

How is that?

The same way ALL phones are cheaper, by signing a 2 year contract... My family contract is $140 unlimited talk, text, data for three people with no speed throttling because we are grandfathered into an older offering.

The only thing that will happen now is people will bash Sprint (Usually happens) but I have 4G LTE at work, in my apartment, and at home. I work in a major city on the east coast and almost never have connection issues.

I wish I could change to T-Mobile, or even Sprint, but where I work doesn't get good reception from T-Mobile and I doubt Sprint as well.

I admit Sprint definitely doesn't have the best reception. But as long as you are in or near a major metropolitan area it's fine. I frequently travel to Ski/Snowboard, or for work and so far have never had an issue. I also primarily use my phone for call, text, e-mail, weather, gps, Netflix, and music streaming. So if someone is using their phone for something other than those I can't speak to it.

MBA ($800 on sale) + iPhone SE ($350) = $1,150. About the price of the new iPhone X.

Perfect for future College student and High School Grad.......just tell them that the iPhone SE is Apple's latest hybrid device: iPhone X + Series 3 LTE Watch combined into one compact easy to carry device. Without the $120 per year additional carrier connect fee for the Watch.

Umm ... what! I had no idea about this "fee". Did I miss it during the keynote?

I know it's not me you are quoting but Apple isn't charging the fee, the carriers are choosing to charge a fee. So far Verizon and ATT have come out and said they are charging $10 per month.

I think he's talking about the $10/month thing. $10/mo x 12 months = $120/year.

The iPhone X (in my head it's an X and not ten) should/could have got some kind of desktop output function for media and apps like Pages and iMovie. But nooooo. We got animated emoticons! "Sad face"
Apple has to keep the "computer" revenue also ha :(

Hate the fragmentation but to be honest I think the fact Apple is now trying to sell to every level of market in the world is the reason they are doing it. They need phones at all price points to compete with the android frey and apparently since they have long recouped the design costs of those early models they can still turn a profit on them at steep discounts.

I understand the new reality of Apple but I guess part of me misses the focus of the old strategy.

Well said....iPhone X is without question in my eyes the UGLIEST flagship device of 2017 so far.
