I love my 6 and my wife's 6S...6S has wireless "Hey, Siri" which I love to use, better camera and a normal headphone jack. I'm getting a 6S for the reasons I've stated and I don't like the 7 and it's odd Home button.
6S Plus is the best option. Decent performance, battery, plus you have 3.5 jack (most headphones are still 3.5).. and now even better price

Almost every article I've read about the announcement talks up the $1,000 entry price for the iPhone X as a potentially profitable idea because "the economy is booming and consumers want luxury goods." It is being regularly compared to Gucci, Prada, etc. as a fashion accessory. That goes against everything Steve Jobs would have stood for. Steve stated he wanted to make the best product and get it into as many people's hands as possible. The product was the reason for Apple's existence, not the profit, and John Scully's flipping of those priorities was "a subtle difference, but it ends up meaning everything." That eventually lead to Apple's downfall and the return of Steve to save the company from ruin.

I'm just a tech enthusiast. I don't buy things for fashion, I buy things for their innovation and utility. Apple has now put me into a difficult position mentally. I want the iPhone X because it is the latest and greatest; however, I also believe it is overpriced by at least $200 for no other reason than for exclusivity by those that want to flaunt their purchasing power. I have absolutely no desire to get an iPhone 8 since it is a four-year-old design that feels like Apple is just keeping around to placate customers who don't want to pony up for the Burberry experience.

Tim Cook is walking a fine line on the iPhone X. Apple is a tech company. He is risking alienating loyal Apple customers who, deep down inside, know they are being asked to either pay a 20% premium for fashion or settle for a secondary product. Some will and some won't. Time will tell if Tim and Angela made the right decision in trying to get more money out of the fashion conscious than they will lose in customers who say it is no longer a good value for the technology.

I hear ya...I'm good with my trusty iPhone 6 and will get a 6S. I still use a 2004 80GB iPod (what they now call a classic) w/the glass front and stainless steel back on my Bose Sound Dock at work...love it! As far as computers, I'm still running the late-2008 aluminum 13" MacBook (with external battery access) w/optical drive and it's as good as new. I upgraded the memory, but that's it... Some of this new technology isn't necessarily better when the old works just fine. Heck, I'd be happy with a 2008-10 15" MBP w/SSD.

Boy I really try to resist being snarky... that said, if a couple hundred bucks is the straw that breaks the camel's back, it might be time to hit your boss up for a 10¢/hr raise so you can cover the step up to the new tier. (I assume making "damn good money" means you could afford the 8, but that you only want the most expensive flagship.)

No worries mate, I know much is lost in translation. I'll explain a little more.
I use both an iPhone 7 and and S8+ soon to be a Note 8. I also have a house full of Macs that I love. But when I look at the iPhone X, I see marginal incremental updates at best....Same old story, faster processor and so on. What turns me off totally is that for $940 the Note 8 looks better, does WAY more, and has had almost every feature if not more than the iPhone X has. The iPhone X display if far from edge to edge, the stainless steel sides will scratch bad and you heard this from me...I'll bet reception is terrible and I'll eat crow if otherwise. The camera design on the back makes me physically ill, when the X is laying flat say on your office desk and you get a text typing it will be terrible as it will rock left and right. Even with a Peel case this issue (design flaw) cannot be avoided.

I also find the animations when opening the iPhone or switching apps unbelievable that this many years into that Apple doesn't give us the option to turn all animations totally off like Android does in developer options making all selections open/close instantly.

If the iPhone X had more flexibility in settings, a stylus, a true edge to edge screen like Essential PH-1 and Note 8 I'd probably buy one. But I'm saving $200 to get a much more feature packed device to get me through the next year. Also...if the Note 8 were priced at $1150-1200 I'd tell Samsung to take a hike too.

Apple has always been greedy but they just pushed the envelope too far this time....and its going to bite them. $1149 for a phone, iPad Pro price increase mid cycle, AppleCare price increase, $10/mo to add Watch 3 to your cell account....No thank you, not for such late and poor innovation.

I've been using the same headphones for 3 years now, those packed inside my iPhone 6's box.
The 7, the 8 and the X come with headphones that plug in the lightning dock.

If I lost mine, I'd get another pair from Apple, if only for the mic and remote. So I don't see the loss of 3,5 jack as a problem. I'm used to getting different headphones for different situations : for work, old-fashionned ones, for listening to music, the earbuds, and since I decided to start jogging I might go with intra-auricular, wireless Beats and a Watch 3.

It doesn't really make a difference, since all Apple products support Wireless anyway, unless you have great noise cancelling headphones with a 3,5 jack. In which case, you should perhaps only buy a new phone when you're ready to get new headphones.

I am sadden by the fact that they dropped rose gold as a color option for the newer models... I guess I'll stick with my 7s plus model... The newer models went in a complete weird direction and looks more and more like android phone but did not look as good as an android phone.

What craziness are we living in where you can buy a MacBook Air for the same price as a phone?

How is this crazy? In terms of computing power, and components, they're about the same.

Just because the macbook is bigger just means it has a bit more aluminum. How much does aluminum cost per ounce?

In fact, you get more for your money with the phone - a high res camera, an LTE radio, etc.

In Sep 2017 you can't really make this comparison with a straight face anymore, unless you fell asleep in 2011 and woke up halfway through today's keynote.

The iPhone X, with its 10nm fabrication, is one of the most advanced computing devices mankind has ever seen and will help push mobile computing ahead over the next year, until it's updated with something even more amazing. The Air is a legacy device from half a decade ago, maybe longer depending on which specs we're talking about.
With that much computing power, I'd love to be able to hook my phone to an external display, keyboard trackpad/mouse and use it as a desktop when I'm at home. Why isn't Apple thinking along those lines is intriguing.

Thank God I kept my iPhone 7 128 gigabytes, ridiculous staring at 64g and 256g they are making you pay more. No way!

You do realize the storage changes is the reason for the change in price.

This idea they are making you pay more isn’t necessary true... they are starting at 64GB compared to 32GB last year.

I am also thinking of upgrading from SE, mostly for a bigger screen. Apple has a comparison tool between iPhones on their website (iPhone section). The major differences between 7 & 8 seem to be:

1) better camera for 8;
2) wireless charging for 8;
3) true tone display tech for 8;
4) 8 starts at 64 GB, 7 - at 32.

For me, personally, true tone is the only appealing thing over 7, but I still wonder if it is worth an extra 150$.

True Tone is absolutely not worth $150 more. Actually I think the game changer from the iPad screen is the ProMotion technology, and I'm really surprised that they didn't include it in the new iPhones.

That's B.S.

Economies of scale and technological advancement should overall see the costs of storage decrease per GB.

What this is more in line with is Apple increasing their prices on just about every product of theirs in 2017 by about $50-$100. There's no reason why the iPhone 8 should cost more than the iPhone 7. But it does because Apple decided it does. it's likely related to ensuring specific margins are met from a financial standpoint, and not based on market / cost.

I upgrade every other year and $1000 for the low storage model is still absurd.
Not when the "high end" Samsung is $969.
The guitar player in my band just paid $30,000 for a new subaru..not worth it to me.
I'll keep my 10 year old honda thank you and buy the best Iphone.

Too pricey for me. I personally don’t finance phones, but if you did at $50 month plus $75-$90 for an unlimited plan, you are spending a ridiculous amount on a phone. I think you can lease a Honda Civic for that much money.
If you lease a car, you'll pay almost that much a month for registration and full coverage insurance :)

You're 10 year old car is going to have more maintenance issues than his new one, which means higher costs in that regard. No wonder millennial home ownership lags behind other generations, (I am one btw) they're paying $1000 or more for a phone instead of saving for a down payment.

My maintenance is offset somewhat by his much higher registration fee, full coverage insurance
his monthly payment with the interest charge and the loss incurred as soon as he drove it off the dealer lot.
We all decide what is more important spending wise, a flashy new car is not important to me.
Yes not the best idea to be spending on iPhones and new cars if you don't have your housing taken care of.
I bought my first house when I was 19 and walked to work :)

It's listed at $969, but the majority don't pay that price.
