Glad I got 2 Neos at launch - $499 EDU pricing before the price increase.

It know how to properly research on the web. And Google has been going down fast. Seems like they nerved it on purpose to push ai on everyone. Alternative search engines don't fare much better, as they often use the big engines under the belly. Without those, it's going to get difficult quickly.
 
$500 (the prior price of the base M4 Mini with edu discount) to go from the paltry 256gb to 1TB. I'm tired Tim.

You misunderstood what I wrote. I was writing about maintaining production of discontinued devices, not about using old technology in new device models.
- The M4 Studio has been discontinued. Why produce it if Apple no longer sells it? The M4 MAX processor is no longer produced.
- The NEO is a new product, but with old technology. Parts are produced for it because they are needed.

Am I missing something here? Yeah the starting price is higher but I just priced out the M5 Max with the same ram and storage as the M1 Studio work got me and they're the same price.

EDIT: Oh wait take that back. I didn't realize it didn't actually change the ram when I chose 64. 64 gigs makes you jump to the more expensive chip.

That seems like maybe you might be overlooking something? -- prices are up across the board.

Not just hoarding, but pre-committing to buy all the DRAM and NAND flash in the world - parts that don't exist yet, to put into massive datacenters that mostly don't exist yet.

(Or perhaps never will, with the growing local opposition to new datacenters & once the free money faucet turns off, requiring AI companies to actually show a profit)

Well, I'm jealous. I ordered the week AFTER the price increase, and just cancelled my order so I could get the RAM I actually wanted. And gave them an arm and a leg in the process.

If they don't ship the M5, I'll return it. There's no point in buying an old computer on the day a new version is released, even if it's cheaper.
 
To all those people who claim the price increase is due to AI:

It is not.

It is because of corporate greed. The chip companies simply took a deliberate decision to increase prices and profits. Of course this strategy that is backed by the huge demand, but it is a choice they made. And my strong guess is that consumer electronic companies appreciate the price increase and milk every penny out of it.

Funny how the prices go... and when I check how much wants to pay be for may not-very-old M4 Pro mini / 64GB / 2B / 10Gbe... well, that's 720 Euros or so. Well, I am very happy with it anyway. 🙂

Corporate greed is part but it's almost all due to Ai. The same chip manufacturing lines that WERE making consumer friendly DDR5 are now repurposed to making Ai/Datacenter only HBM memory.
For those holding hope that prices will come down in 2028/2029 when new memory manufacturing comes on line should also realize those new RAM factories are going to be feeding the Ai datacenter and NOT the consumer market.

All NAND is also now going to datacenter applications instead of SSDs.

Realistically CXMT might be our only possible hope, but tariffs are gonna tariff.

Not sure why you're carrying water for Ai scum like Altman, Su, Nadella, Huang et al.

My main Linux box has a 512 GB NVME and a 1 TB hard drive for all the infrequently used stuff. The arrangement works fine. Plenty of remaining space on both. In fact the server is set up that way too (512 NVME and 1 TB internal SSD) along with an external drive for all the movies, pictures, and music.

Also TSMC wants more money per chip as they also repurpose their wafers to nvidia and other data center chips , so everyone are hiking prices in the food chain , and the customer is the one paying the bill

Does the price increase have anything to do with TSMC having a US location to produce the chips or are they subject to increased tariffs from Taiwan ??

Apple is giving users who ordered the M4 Mac mini a free upgrade to the new M5 Pro or M6 models. Haven't heard anything yet about the Studio though.
