both cpu and gpu are "underclocked" due temperature issues caused by the structure design of the machine.

Great insight as the GPU makes zero difference in the quoted test. Also it would report lower stock values to database AND our resident geekbench destroyer Tutor gets his high scores based exactly around underclocking and managing turbo biases. It is exactly the score it should be for the clock and generation of processor. Unlike Apple white papers Intel publishes a great deal of documentation on their chips. It is quite easy to make assumptions that are close to fact prior to release. Unless there are surprises like special parts made just for Apple (ie. GTX 680mx in iMac)

So what?

What? That's 1 CPU kicking the crap out of 2 previous gen CPU's without proper optimizations! Wow people...

you missed the part where I said 1 cpu beat 2 cpu's. you should go buy a dell.

So, your new crippled single socket machine is slightly faster than the 3 year old dual socket machine.

I will buy the Dell with dual 12-core chips - and those 24-core (48-thread) systems will destroy the iTube.

Why don't the fans see the writing on the wall? The "Mac Semi-pro" is simply the xMac that people have asked for.

Calm Down

First of all, it's tiresome having to read all the stupid comments like the guys that said "Apple fails again" and how unimpressive the geekbench score is. I say this because we don't really know what the score of a production machine will be. Secondly, when you run Geekbench in the free mode it only runs in 32 bit mode. 64 bit scores are typically 10% higher. I have tested many machines in both modes and can assure this is the case. That would put the score around 26300 which is impressive. It may come in around thirty on an actual production machine. Many of the excessively high scores on geekbench are from over clocked machines. Geekbench gives a lot of precedence to high megahertz. The Pro Machines are mostly aimed at FinalCut, Motion, and Adobe users. When compressing many videos in compressor and setting it up to use all the cores, the pro machine will outpace the over clocked Core i7 and remain reliable and stable.

I expect the new machines to be very solid work horse machines. A for the price, they will probably fall into the basic price slots that Apple has had for years, with the entry level Mac Pro being 2500.00, as you go up you get faster processor, more memory, and more storage.

Be a bit more reserved until you have all the facts you knee jerk reaction guys!

I know I can get a faster PC for cheaper, I'm just a fan of OSX :p

Last time I checked intel is the one with the x86 processor roadmap, not Apple.
Also can't we expect a more powerful chip configuration than this anyway?

I feel like people don't think about these things before they make judgement.

Since the performance is only incrementally more and the size is substantially less and it is a single chip machine, I suspect this will be under $2k price point. A Mac-Mini x2 of sorts.

The question becomes, what about dual chip versions?

Hi, welcome to the real world. This product is made by Apple. It will cost closer to $2,999.

And what is it that you are going to produce or make with that new machine and with what software? Just curious.

underclocked trough software

I am struggling to understand that question. Wouldn't he run the same software and work the same projects, just with a different machine? Or was that just a question about why he needs more speed?

So we waited 1500 days for an 8% boost. :(

Various benchmarks are interesting. I hope MR keeps posting them, and I'm especially interested in the GPUs. But if you plan your computer purchases by a single artificial benchmark alone, you are measuring speed and power in a way that may not serve you well :)

With $6000 of GPU power alone in there, $2999 would be awesome! This could be the MacBook Air-with-SSD all over again: Apple offering cutting-edge tech for SO low that the competition can't touch the price for some time afterward.

Fingers crossed that you're right, but I won't get my hopes up yet.

And what's the price for that machine? Just check Dell's site for Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2665 with only eight cores....$2973.00 Didn't see the dual 12 core, it must be around 6000.00

Does your current MP have PCIe storage and Dual GPU's up to 6GB VRAM a piece?

Umm, the point we are making here is that our current MacPro's COULD do this. You can expand a MacPro, it's what makes it so great.

The new MiniPro is locked down besides RAM.

Whatever I want running Windows or Linux (or Apple OSX if I want to Hackintosh).

But honestly, this is one of the most asinine comments that I've ever seen on MacRumours. Give yourself a gold star.

Apple uses UPOD. This was "leaked" to lower expectations. The deliverable will scream. Expandability with legacy cards is the only fair criticism I have heard. That can be addressed by putting your old MacPro on the TB network. Apple should make a PCIe connector on the new and cable and PCIe card for the old.

A facebook post about his new fast Dell he's facebooking on, then WoW. ;)

All jokes aside, I'm stoked for this to come out. The design is amazing. My 2009 8 way is running great but I'll still get one. I might have to get a Pegasus to plug into it.

I can't wait to see the fugly imitations to come out in about 3 years.

Just out of curiosity for hardware folks, isn't there a communications benefit to using a single processor with 12 cores vs. dual 6 cores? I seem to remember a 30% or so overhead with SMP when in college in the 90s. With 2 processors, the board handles the sync, with one, it's all handled in the processor, thus faster. Is this correct?

I wonder if these are stackable with the ventilation. Oooh tube farm!

Geekbench shows only a portion of the entire viewpoint. Once the new Mac Pro is released and into actual usage then we can gauge it's actual performance specially grinding the long hours and how it handles heat. Might be too early to make conclusions. Like what the article says, maybe Apple is still refining this machine and fixing some glitches. Notice in the WWDC, Apple left out many details and pricing. Usually in past events, with new announcements they have all the details accompanied by the price. Maybe in a few months we'll get more info.

Oh come on, don't be logical... all the cool kids are basing their future purchasing decisions based off of a leaked five digit number generated on unfinished software and hardware!
