So how are the magnets gonna play with Credit Cards in the MagSafe pouches?
There will not be an issue - it is shielded

i am hoping you cant see the ring when using the clear case as the pictures show....might kind of look sucky

So, you have to buy a apple card holder integrated to your phone or find a wallet that is Safe-from-iPhone-destroying-cards-feature™ to prevent them to do any harm to the cards? A bit ridiculous, no? Also, magnets can mess up a lot of things, not just cards, and **** to get stuck on it, depending how strong it is...

I wish Apple, being eco-friendly and all, could shift their tones of plastic cases towards healthier alternatives. If small companies like Pelacase, Incipio, Wild, etc. can all do compostable iPhone cases, this should be doable for Apple too. Go greener, Apple! 🖐

I wish they would do that with the leather cases. Some type of vegan leather option if the environment is a serious concern and a little bit of humanity involved as well.

Im sure i’ll get eye-rolled and be in vast minority but that’s ok.

What I want to know is how convenient the actual magsafe charger is. I imagine it stays stuck to the phone as you pick it off the night stand, which sounds clunkier than how i want my wireless charger to work.
You could try a command strip (cut to length) on the back of the charger to keep it stuck to the nightstand. Test it in a hidden area to make sure it doesn’t damage the surface first.

I think they do use vegan leather.
Looks like they don’t. I could’ve sworn I saw Apple cases with something about vegan leather but maybe it was another product.

Sheer genius. This in hind sight appears obvious, but why havent we seen this beofre on other smartphones? Whomever came up with this at Apple deserves a bonus. A Starbucks gift card or something for adding god-knows-how-much money to the Apple ecosystem.
I agree. I think it was a combination of the success with the their Apple Watch charging system and the failure of their Air Power product — they probably saw the limitations of current wireless charging and held off on releasing a product until they could make it better. Classic Apple — their patience pays off.

This is actually a really valid point, and that magnets can interfere with the credit card, in some cases, you can actually render the credit card defctive from working at all. Not uncommon, but it probably depends how close the magnet actually comes in contact with the card, especially with the integrated Chip. Some of the third-party cases with magnets even have ‘cautionary labels‘ mentioning that you shouldn’t allow credit cards to come in contact with the magnet itself.

I agree that this could be a stepping stone to a port-less iPhone in the future. I’m thinking of the EU looking at forcing manufacturers to one standard for charging, but they’re focused on a port. What if the product doesn’t have a port?

Credit Cards are less susceptible than most people think....and with the move to using the chips, there is no risk. Hotel keys and apparently some gift cards can get messed up. Pretty sure Apple would have done their homework here.

For you naysayers , remember that MagSafe is designed to be an ecosystem. They showed Belkin at the keynote but expect lots of others who will bring a variety of solutions. For those concerned about a one handed charging experience, the Belkin stand offers that. Yes it’s 150 dollars. But other vendors are surely going to have something similar for less money.

I don't get it. So you get this round bit that you attach to your iPhone, and there is a cable that you plug into a USB-C charger. So can someone explain to me how this is "wireless"? There's a cable from the wall to the USB-C charger, then another cable from the USB-C charger all the way to the phone. Cables all the way.

My wife constantly complains about cables lying around. I can see her buying something like this because it is "wireless", assuming it gets rid of the cables, and returning it straight to the store. Because there are just as many cables as before.

I don't understand, are the magnets inside the phone? or inside the charger, and they just added a metal ring to the case?

Your question is answered in the article:

The images reveal a ring containing MagSafe's magnets on the interior of the case and confirm that Apple's new silicon cases cover the bottom of the iPhone for the first time

How do you expect to charge anything without any wires at all? Were you expecting the electricity to magically flow through the air and into your phone?

For the hundredth millionth time, they are SHIELDED!!! Please read.

So glad I went for the Dark navy case it looks nice.. much lighter than the apple website I just hope the pro in real life isn't to green as the apple website has you to believe!

I must say I don’t get it. I understand a wireless charger that forces the phone to be in the correct position, but the good thing about wireless charging is just setting your phone down, charging it, then lifting it off when you are done charging.

With this MagSafe charger, it looks small and like it’ll go with your phone wherever you take it. This defeats the whole “untethered” feeling that wireless charging is supposed to bring. How is this any better than plugging your phone into a wired charger, besides that it’s easier to start charging? But the downside is that the wireless is less efficient and worse for the battery.

I just don’t get it. It really seems like this is preparing people for a portless iPhone.
You can charge and continue to use your phone when it’s wet. If it’s flat and wet it’s not ideal plugging it in, could even cause damage.

Do we think the magnets in the new iPhone 12 are strong enough to stick to an existing non-MagSafe charging pad?

The reason I ask is... I don't want them to. The whole point of using a wireless pad is to quickly grab your phone and go. I don't want my phone to stick to it if it's not supposed to. Imagine picking up your phone and the pad half sticks and then falls off.

The iPhone 12 has magnets in it... existing wireless charging pads have some amount of metal in them... I just don't want them to fight with each other... :p

I like the current easel-style wireless charger stands too. But I'd hate for the phone to stick to it when it's not supposed to.

I think the advantage from this comes into play when you get the wireless charger pad that can charge 2 or even 3 devices at the same time.
