I've been with Apple since the 1980's as a contained ecosystem with the best privacy features. This will be the straw that broke the camel's back. Have assiduously avoided anything and everything Google. If Apple puts anything from Google on my phone, iPad, laptop, or 3 desktops, they will all be trash canned. Done with Siri, done with Apple.
- Early 2000s: Google Search becomes the predominant search engine on Apple products, including early iPhones integrated with Google services like Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube.
- 2002: Initial renegotiations start for default search engine agreements between Apple and Google.
- Mid-2000s: Google becomes the default search engine for Safari browsers on Mac and iPhone.
- 2007: iPhone launches with pre-installed Google Maps and YouTube apps; Google CEO Eric Schmidt joins Apple’s board.
- 2008: Google launches Android, directly competing with iOS.
- 2009: Apple and Google agree on revenue-sharing and keep Google as default search with no exclusivity obligation.
- Early 2010s: Collaboration on developer tools and APIs for cross-platform app development.
- 2011: Siri launches, initially routing search to Bing instead of Google.
- 2012: Apple replaces Google Maps with Apple Maps.
- 2017: Siri and Spotlight search services switch back to Google for search results.
- Late 2010s to Present: Collaboration on web standards, security protocols, and browser engine compatibility.
- 2020: Joint development and launch of the Exposure Notifications system for COVID-19 contact tracing, emphasizing privacy and opt-in design.
- Early 2020s: Legal and regulatory disclosures reveal detailed financial terms of default search agreements; Google continues large payments to Apple for default status (around $20 billion in 2022).
- Early 2020s: Integration of many Google apps (Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, Drive, Photos, Docs, Calendar) widely available on iOS via the App Store.
- Early to mid-2020s: Ongoing competition and patent litigation alongside collaboration and cross-ecosystem app support.
- 2024-2025: Reports of Apple negotiating to leverage Google’s Gemini AI models to power Siri and other Apple Intelligence services emerge.
- Ongoing: Cooperation in cloud infrastructure use, privacy-preserving technologies, and participation in industry standards and regulatory discussions.
- Continuous: Indirect integrations where Apple ecosystem supports Google technologies via third-party apps or underlying services without direct collaboration.
Oh but this is the last straw now? Or are we maybe being a little dramatic? Also, if you
truly cared about privacy, you wouldn't be on any "ecosystem".
