The best AI for the bean counters and short term shareholder value... innovation Cook-style.

Being an old timer I remember when I felt like a cherished user and developer by Apple (e.g. going to the Apple Store in the 00s, 50% developer discounts, great WWDC events where we were treated really well - okay they were still pretty arrogant and products designed and marketed in a way that felt we were part of a community and in it with them).

Today I feel like a lemon that's getting squeezed... and grin and bear it because the competition amazingly can't think differently, not to mention I'm deep into the eco-system (though I am swapping my daily phone for my Pixel Fold more and more)

But I guess you can't be a multi-trillion dollar company without have some evil empire vibes...

Agreed. I don’t understand why Apple still keeps on trying to hold onto the Siri brand, as it’s the punchline to a joke & has been for 5+ years now.
Indeed. And that's fine - it's part fo the creative process. You try stuff. Some things work better than others. Contrary to the expectation of some here, not everything Apple does will be a culturally redefining moment. That's a ridiculous expectation. Siri had its moment. But that moment has passed. It's time to let her ride off into the sunset and make way for a better solution that does not include the word Siri in it. Brand equity is a tricky beast. And while an argument can be made for keeping the Siri branding, but offering a much improved experience, its could also be a moment to move on. part of me thinks Apple will do just that. But a more vocal part of me knows we'll get Siri+. Either way, I just hope for a more useful "assistant."

makes sense. won't cost them a dime in reality as google pays apple a tonne to be default search engine.

Seems to be costing Apple as they’re paying Google.

And this is big. Why aren’t they paying Google for search? Why instead is Google paying Apple?

Because Apple has customers. Apple views their customer base as a privilege others need to pay to have access to. Google wants them bad for search.

So why is it that Apple is having to pay Google for ai and not the other way around? Probably maybe hopefully Apple is straight up saying you can’t have the data. Unlike search. Or perhaps Apple needs this worse than Google needs Apple for ai at the moment.

Whatever the case it’s a switch to see Apple paying someone and not the other way around. It’s definitely not the story Apple told when introducing Apple Intelligence. And there is no way Apple can integrate Gemini to iOS the way Google can integrate its own thing to android. Google is flexing here. And the big question begging to be asked is well then why not get a Google pixel next time?

Apple Intelligence powered by Google. lol.

I also think that the Apple Intelligence brand was almost DOA as soon as people saw what it actually was - or wasn't - earlier this year.

Obviously it was Apple's attempt to say 'Here's our more refined and private take on these cloud based AI services which are sucking up your data whilst including the 'AI' bit'.

But it was mostly terrible. Hopefully when it comes out of beta, Apple can rethink the name. Just call it 'Apple AI' or something.

Agree. Siri had a time/place. From a branding POV, Apple Intelligence feels like the right next phase. While the rollout was less than ideal... Apple Intelligence is still too new - AI still too new - that Apple Intelligence branding can survive (and even thrive) its awkward introduction and become very relevant component of The Ecosystem. But that's only if the next update is legit. I have to believe Apple understands this and it's why they are partnering with Google - they can't afford a misstep here. Not that one would be catastrophically irreparable, but getting this next iteration right has such insane upside.

why are you wondering about privacy issues when it runs on Private Cloud Compute? genuine question
I am concerned that data will be shared by Apple with other companies. End use licence agreements can be changed at a drop of a hat. Just because Apple tries to keep the information now doesn't mean that they won't be bribed or blackmailed to give it up in the future. I am sure governments in addition to companies will want to get their hands on this information.

When will Tim Cook finally step down? He's the culprit of all things going wrong with Apple the past decade.
You mean like the fact that they're currently 3rd in market cap behind Nvidia and Microsoft? Yes I expect the board will demand he step down real soon.

Another 'innovation' brought to you by Cook. Isn't his sell by date long past by now?
As just noted to someone else..you mean the same Tim Cook that has steered Apple to be the 3rd largest company by market cap? Yeah clearly he's long past his sell by date 😂

Has there been news (sorry if I missed it) if the new Siri will be all or mostly on-device? Or will all or almost all of the intelligence be cloud based and require a good connection?

Its really pathetic that a 4 trillion dollar company needs to buy AI from its competitors. Steve would have never allowed that. Siri would have been state of the art under him or people got fired.
Steve has been dead for 14 years. At this point what Steve would think/allow/whatever really is irrelevant and to be honest you can't say that anyhow. Steve also told us that we'd never have apps on the phone, it would all be web apps. Apple's forte is not data science, its hardware. Always has been and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. They should have just bought Anthropic.

I have had Apple devices(Mac, iPad, and iPhone) since 2013 and I have never used Siri. I will never knowingly use AI.
I've had Apple devices since the first Intel Mac and use Siri whenever I need to to set timers, etc. I use AI all the time as a tool like I'd use any other tool. People's anti-AI stances are frankly bizarre. It's a tool. I get people having issues with how training data was/is acquired, etc. but that "AI" in and of itself is "bad" seems ridiculous to me.

Apple is now dry sucking to Google. Freakin' sellout decision and AI is overhyped. Wish Scott Forstall took over instead of dismissing him.

The scenario reminds me of maps. Apple used google maps for a long time and it took time for Apple Maps to catch up. Early Apple Maps was a mess and a PR disaster, and Apple does not want to repeat that with Siri/AI. Apple has been behind operating in the mass information space, in which google does really well. And we have read of Apple loosing key AI talent. All told, I am not surprised Apple would outsource the AI for Siri 2.0. Perhaps Siri 3.0 will be powered by Apple-developed AI models.

Agreed. The ability to talk to our devices and have them do this is so Star Trek we can't go back. Even if it is just for basics like creating reminders, setting alarms, and asking to navigate us home. I do these kinds of things all the time and my GF is jealous at how well it works when she can't get it to work on her Android phone. She has her valid reasons for using an Android phone, but that is another topic.

apple will only do so if they can monetize it... they do not want a loss leader... has anyone made real $$$ from AI other than the chip makers???
Yeah, a ChatGPT type thing uses a lot of compute with little or no gain to Apple. I wouldn't bother with it, let OpenAi and others do that.
