To be fair, it was the first app notification and secondly, the people that browse tech news nail the App Store. If everyone tried at once, that's just something from an IT standpoint, would lag behind several hours to not make additional work for myself, in the off chance anything did go down.

I completed the game while waiting in line for Rogue One lol. The game is tooooooo short, btw. I'd say that's even a bigger negative than the always on internet connection.

Define "beat"? All levels finished? All pink, purple, and green coins? All characters unlocked?

By completed the game you mean have been through each of the levels, or been through each of the levels and collect all the pink purple and black coins?
Seems like this game is banking on its replayability.

I just went through the game but compared to a console Mario game, this is about 100x shorter. Levels are about 3-5x shorter, and all the worlds only have 3 levels except the last one. Most people are not into getting every challenge completed. A handheld Mario game that costs $40 can take 20 hours to complete while this didn't even take 2 hours. Overall I think the game is decent, and I get why the levels are shorter for on the go gaming. I think about 15-20 worlds would have been much better, though from the way the game is setup, I think more in app purchase levels will be added later, and I'm fine with that as long as they give us a bit more for $10.

As supposed in the article, sending a push notification to everyone at once would have just crashed the App Store. Wasn't there already some downtime on the App Store yesterday? For all we know that could have been due to the load from Mario.

Because people have different likes?

I've had a Wii U for the past 3 years. The games on the Wii U, in my opinion, are MUCH better than the Playstation 4 or Xbox One. Most people with families and young children agree.

The mario game is a hit at my house, along with crossy road, and a bunch of puzzle games. We don't mind paying $10 for something people clearly enjoy. $10 is nothing. I know other people's finances are different, but $10 is not something that personally I don't bat an eye at. We buy about $200 worth of apps a year.
So you are comparing games like Halo, The Last of Us, inFamous, Resogun, Uncharted,...... to Nintendo games? These games I mentioned are far above what Nintendo is delivering. Can't wait to see what Sony is brining to iOS.

No they aren't. In my opinion, all those games are awful. Not fun at all. Mostly boring single player games or dumb shooters.

I do not like shooters. I found Halo boring after about 5 minutes. The Last of Us was super boring. I'm just watching a movie with an occasional interaction.

We bought a Playstation 4, with The Last of Us and rented a dozen other games, played it for a week and returned it after my daughter said 'The playstation is no fun. I want to play on the Wii U'. I said, 'I agree'.

Uncharted or Tomb Raider are more my style, but not as much gameplay as Super Mario 3D World or Lego: Undercover. Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. are amazing with my daughter and her friends, and we play other 4-player games when couples come over like Nintendo land or Mario Party.

People have different opinions. To me, all of those games don't match the best Wii U offerings.

If shooters aren't your style then you were buying the wrong games though. Resogun, Knack and other seem much more appropriate for your needs. There are some awesome family games for Playstation 4, the Wii U is just a more childish game platform although I LOVE some of their games.

Did you get all the various special coins as well? I noticed that the levels change when you are on the third set.

That's my problem too. For £7.99 you don't get much mario. I have a 3DS and both Mario games. Both take absolutely ages to go through and finish. £2.99 it would be a buy but £7.99 and needing data to work. No thanks!

Calm down keyboard warrior, I'm sure you're not this confrontational in person ;)

There are plenty of games that make plenty of money that are free, look at Vain Glory.

I have an expectation for games to be EXCEPTIONAL at $10. Not this.

Exceptional and you pay $10? Yeah enjoy that. Here's a pearl of wisdom: your expectations of premium products for free don't pay programmers' mortgages and therefore carry no weight. Until you do your job pro bono, don't ask others to, and if you don't like it, buy (or don't buy) something else. People don't make a living catering to cheapskates.

Nope, just like on PlayStation most people don't collect all the trophies for a game (it gets frustratingly difficult, lol).

Fair enough, I agree on all points :)
I hope future worlds don't cost additional... he consensus here is that they likely will though. Money cow

Yeah I got my notification, over 8 1/2 hours after I downloaded it. Once I saw this I just nodded my head and mumbled "yeah thanks..[delete]." The social media posts letting me know the game was ready to download around 11:50am ET yesterday was all I needed.

They probably had Mario delivering the notifications and he got tired. Give him a break, he's a plumber not a marathoner.
I take it you've never watched a speed run on YouTube or Twitch, lol.

As for the notifications, it was never intended for people like us who find out about it immediately because we follow tech news closely. Believe it or not, most people don't care about playing a game the moment it comes out. Madness!

Gamers are a an entitled bunch...

Expecting to get something when I was promised to get it is now defined as "entitled?"

It's one thing to be on MacRumors and try not to be so negative all the time or anti-Apple, but why are we trying so hard to defend them this time? Even the OP offers two separate excuses.

It says "Regards, The App Store team".

I got a notification 8 hours after downloading.

Apple push is really good for all the iPhone apps so it's a bit strange it took 8 hours to push something.

The problem is Apple said we will notify you when the app becomes available. They failed.

It's not the end of the world at all, but considering how much money they have, the fact that their push system is really good, it's a bit odd every one got notified so late.

Of course its not the end of the world. But it does show the lack of integrity and leadership at Apple today. Setting a false impression is now standard operating procedure because Apple does not consider the User important enough to have that consideration populate down the management chain. The wording was probably approved at a low level and no one even thought of the ramifications of setting the expectation that people would be notified immediately. At Apple it is just, "So what?, were Apple and we do what we want. Get over it."
