People upset about this need to reevaluate there life. Seriously. It's not just a game, it's a rehashed 30 year old game that has been available on multiple platforms for that entire period.

I didn't sign up for a notification but you couldn't scroll the Internet or TV news and not know it wasn't release. Who are these people that are in a windowless room doing nothing but hitting "get mail" repeatedly?

I'm gonna count that as an 8 world dash. And plus, half the time in those runs he's warping space and time to finish the game anyways! :D
I guess you're right. Not even counting frame skipping and basic glitching through areas, you end up with crap like this where they overflow the RAM or something and end up winning the game in under a minute:

MARIO IS LAZY!

Back in my day we did speed runs legit.

Those dang union guys. "Notification? I'll get to it when I get to it. I'm on break right now, so you can blow off."

Yeah I got my notification, over 8 1/2 hours after I downloaded it. Once I saw this I just nodded my head and mumbled "yeah thanks..[delete]." The social media posts letting me know the game was ready to download around 11:50am ET yesterday was all I needed.
I thought the "notification" was perhaps being delivered on device by like a pop up notification -- If the "notification" is being sent out by e-mail -- Then Apple *absolutely* has to parcel out the e-mail otherwise spam filters.

When the crowd funded "Mighty No. 9" video game was ready and they wanted to find out which game platform (PC/XBox/Playstation/WiiU/3DS/PS Vita) their backers wanted it delivered on -- the survey e-mails were killed by mail server spam filters since 68,000 identical e-mails were going out all at once. They had to resend the survey emails, but instead in blocks over 4-5 days.

That was 68,000 -- Apple had millions probably sign up. It's going to a while to deliver the e-mails.

Because people have different likes?

I've had a Wii U for the past 3 years. The games on the Wii U, in my opinion, are MUCH better than the Playstation 4 or Xbox One. Most people with families and young children agree.

The mario game is a hit at my house, along with crossy road, and a bunch of puzzle games. We don't mind paying $10 for something people clearly enjoy. $10 is nothing. I know other people's finances are different, but $10 is not something that personally I don't bat an eye at. We buy about $200 worth of apps a year.

Now this is a perspective I didn't think of and I totally agree.

Maybe you would agree $10 for such a short game seems lacking. It may be a great game, but it's not priced right.

I'll change my opinion should they add content on the regular, but who knows - maybe they will just keep changing $10 new content

"Far Too Late"

Yeah, cuz what kind of lamer wants to play a stale & obsolete 24-hour old game?

Far, far too late.

I'm hardly an iOS programming genius, but why on earth did the "Get Notified" notification have to be a PUSH notification? Couldn't they have used a local notification from the App Store app on each device locally? I suppose they wanted to eliminate the risk of being people notified in the event of the game getting pushed back.

I would not assume the notification behavior was anything but absolutely deliberately collaborated between Nintendo and Apple and controlled at the highest levels of management.

Expecting to get something when I was promised to get it is now defined as "entitled?"

It's one thing to be on MacRumors and try not to be so negative all the time or anti-Apple, but why are we trying so hard to defend them this time? Even the OP offers two separate excuses.

And sent from do_not_reply<at>new.itunes.com

Not defending but its not like someone will die if they don't get to play video games 18 seconds after a game is released.

I guess you cared enough to offer your opinion on the matter ;-P

Seriously though, if I ask to be notified about an event when it happens, it's not unreasonable to expect to be notified when it happens. Otherwise the 'feature' is not fulfilling its job, or it's substandard.

I mean, you could argue the notify button is there for people who don't care when they get notified, as long as they do get a notification at some point. Fine, but obviously there's loads of people out there who DO want to know when something is available, so they probably feel let down by it.

It's a slippery slope. Get complacent, accept shoddy services, say 'yeah whatever, it's just a game', but the next time Apple fails to notify you about something you REALLY DO care about or delays that notice for hours or even days, then what right do you have to complain? How do you establish a threshold of acceptance and reliability for a service which is consistently inconsistent? Amirite?

This is most likely intentional, just like how Apple pushes iOS updates in batches, not to everyone all at the same time.

Though, I guess Apple should have informed user about this design in a clearer manner, when user clicks that "Notify" button.

LOL I haven't got mine yet and I completed the game!
no you didn't; let's see a screenshot

I completed the game while waiting in line for Rogue One lol. The game is tooooooo short, btw. I'd say that's even a bigger negative than the always on internet connection.
care to share a screenshot of your quick accomplishment?

I never received a notification either, but I'm on MR everyday so it wasn't a huge deal to me that I didn't get notified. Life goes on.

Can't believe people spent $10 on this game when there are better games with more depth, better graphics, that are actually free

I'd go as far as to say there are few games worse than this. Imagine this were not using the Mario sprite - this would be a classic un-noticed 2-3 star game. If that.

it's been very entertaining for me; i haven't even gotten to the paid portion yet.

I think this feature is more for people that don't go to sites like Macrumors or other tech sites daily or even weekly. For those people, receiving an alert a few hours or a day or two after release won't matter.
Finally, a Macrumor-er who's not complaining about 1st World Problems

It's not a push notification, it's an email. I wish it was a push notification or even both, much easier to notice.

Edit: Apparently it is both, I wonder why it's so inconsistent.

Exactly. This is very standard sort of affair where notification of an update can take some time after the initial release to go out. Considering the millions of people that likely hit that button, the last thing you need is for them to all hit the server at once.

As a relevant example, for those that enrolled to get Windows 10 prior to release there was potentially days (might have been weeks even) delay before the update would install following the release of the OS.

In this case I can't see why people have any reason to be upset. If they wanted the game that badly they could have opened the store app and downloaded it at the time. It's not like the release date hadn't been widely publicised. If they were too preoccupied to check themselves then surely missing out by a day won't kill them.

There is only 19 levels and they are about 1 minute apiece. If you don't go for the coins, you can beat em on 2 tries average. That's 38 minutes, and I lined up an hour early for Rogue One.

Do these free games have timers or in-app purchases to remove artificial hurdles? Do they have banner ads? Free games have to make money somehow. They're rarely ever truly free.

Nah, it's a push notification as well. Think it depends on if you selected notify on a Mac or an iOS thingy:
