that's not the store, that's the site. There was never anything wrong with the site, just the store itself.

Could this possibly to do with ios5 launch and iCloud and subsequent movement of resources to cope with the demand that will be needed

That's almost definitely not true. For the large majority of purchases that'd be true, but I'm sure there's a not-insignificant number of purchases that are lost forever for every minutes that the store is down.

Really? I guess I just don't see it. Most products sold on the site aren't particularly cheap. I would assume that before someone ordered something there they would do what I did and research it and make an informed decision...

my point being that having done all that and decided to purchase a Mac, I can't imagine that a consumer would see the site was down and say "well, if I can't make my purchase this very second, then never mind. Guess I'm getting a Dell."
