So that people who returns their Mac won't get the code.

Nope, you don't worry about that. You treat early adopters well, they are your bread and butter for free marketing. Apple could easily afford shipping out a few extra codes.

There is nothing stopping someone from buying and returning a Mac even yesterday. Who would really go through that over $20?

Anyone else think Apple does this just to create hype? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there always seems to be a shortage of some kind after an Apple product launch. In this case, it's a lack of working redemption codes. Why promise people a free OS upgrade and not deliver on its release date?

People are really taking Apple for granted. I'm pissed too cause I've been waiting forever for ML. But I read a lot of tech blogs and it seems like the most common headlines are like: "LG delays Android update for 3 phones", "HTC Focus won't get Android ICS update after all". ML being delayed for "up to 24 hours" for some customers is not much in comparison. But ****, do I want to use AirPlay and all the rest. But mistakes happen!

I'd actually understand if they were delaying the release of the OS, or some hardware product. We're talking about redeeming a $20 coupon they promised when they sold the hardware over a month ago. They're making the process of obtaining the upgrade we were promised about as appealing as going through security at the airport. Customers who forked over many thousands of dollars for a product that includes a reputation for and promise of superior customer service are now being treated as presumed thieves over a $20 transaction.

People say that Steve Jobs being gone has nothing to do with this, but this whole fiasco has the fingerprints of a money-grubbing corporate hack all over it. If this is the direction that Apple is headed, then that company will soon be dead to me.

Ok, so I'm disappointed too, but seriously, some of you need to get some perspective on life. It's nit like you're not going to get your free update, it's just delayed. If you don't want to wait, it's only $20, pay for it. Willing to bet Apple will reimburse you, and if they don't, you just bought a $1500+ computer, what's $20?

Chill out, will ya?

I may need many things, but one thing none of us need are deep philosophical lessons on life from you. This is a discussion board dedicated to Apple products, and a thread dedicated to the problems involved with Apple delivering the UpToDate OS upgrade. So naturally, those of us posting here are focused on that topic. If you want to wax philosophical that's your prerogative, but don't presume to deliver lessons on life to anyone here. I'm actually exercising considerable restraint in this response. I'd prefer not to have that tested further.

What's more, the anger isn't about the delay. Yeah, the delay is irritating, but in the bigger picture, it is meaningless. What my anger comes from is the process, and the principles involved, and the way Apple's methods seem to indicate a major shift in their attitudes toward their customers, and a more direct focus on prioritizing short term bottom line profits over long term customer satisfaction and loyalty.

All of the barriers being thrown up to block us from getting the upgrades we've been promised are designed to accomplish two things: To prioritize early sales deliveries over what amount to pre-paid sales deliveries, and to prevent individual theft of or inadvertent conveyance of benefits to customers who are not owed them. These measures have been taken with maximum dedication to these goals and with complete disregard for the experience of the established and heretofore loyal customer. They seem to represent a fundamental and disturbing shift in Apple's philosophy with a focus more directly on short term performance and almost no attention to the dedication to service and quality that got them where they are today.

I've called and written them to complain about this. Their service people have been very courteous. The strength of a customer-centric culture is not destroyed overnight. But make no mistake, this is a very disturbing development, and it rightfully makes a lot of people angry. Less the delay than the process that is producing the delay, and the agenda betrayed by that process.

Already reported it on the other thread but I'm still waiting for the code after 12+ hours. Thought it could take some time as it is my first time using the Up To Date Program but now I see it isn't normal.

I sent one request in this morning and got a code that "was already used once" then tonight I sent a request for another new Mac and I never got any email back this time.....

sounds like bad hype to me.. why would they want that?

I've given up and have just resorted to bit torrent lol. I'll pay the app store my $20 worth of "code" once they send it to me. :)

Didn't the same thing happen with this service last year too? I had a lot of trouble obtaining a code then, and still haven't gotten one this year.

Apple had about a year to get the MAS up to speed for an OS release. What do they decide to do, I am not sure given todays events.

People in this situation should just acquire it and complain to Tim Cook, regardless if he reads it or not. Utterly pathetic of one of the most valuable companies in Tech and they cannot seem to get any cloud based services right.

I have now sworn off the MAS for the better, blocked it and will never use it. Apple should have either started the Up-to-Date registration two weeks around mid July and provided redeem codes that are only allowed to be used on a single AppleID. Or assign it to the AppleID if the customer wants during registration.

This seems like amature hour and, all for $20 quid. Seriously Apple, I would expect a gift card and a code for this delay. We all paid for it when we bought a new Mac and its the principle of it all. :apple: hang your head in shame.

If I had known of this child's play of today, I would have installed it two plus weeks ago.:p

Yeah, you know, I suppose you're right. It's definitely an example of how Apple's attitudes toward their customers is going down the tube, what with the FREE update they are giving us when we bought a computer before the operating system was released.

As I said, I'm disappointed that I haven't gotten my update yet, despite filling the form out many hours earlier. I haven't heard a peep from Apple, no emails, no anything. But am I running around like it's the end of the world? No, because it's not. If it takes a week for this, I'll be annoyed. But the operating system hasn't even been out for 24 hours yet. It's not the end of the world.

If I really wanted it that badly, I would pony up the $20 and buy it. Then, if I felt so inclined, I could hash it out with Apple later, where they would most likely credit me the $20, because of their exceptional customer service.

I'm so tired of every time something like this happens, people like you run around like Chicken Little screaming "the sky is falling, the sky is falling, it's the beginning of the end of Apple." I've been an Apple faithful since 2008, and it seems anything that revolves around servers handling something is a disaster. You deal with it and move on. The same thing will happen in a couple months when iOS 6 is released. And next year when OSX 10.9 is released, and so on and so forth.

Think of it this way — at least you don't have to deal with all that server traffic today. Your download should fly tomorrow when you get your code.

Seriously Apple, I would expect a gift card and a code for this delay.

Apple should give us something free because we didn't get something for free? That makes no sense.

Let's all have patience.

I can wait patiently for $20 I suppose, kind of a bummer as I am excited to install it and play around with it for a bit. Guess I'll go play some games to pass the time.

I have been patience, however it has now run dry. You are not getting it free, Mac OS and iOS price is rolled into the hardware purchase. This is not MS selling you an upgrade. The promotion was when you buy a new or refurb Mac on or after a certain date, you will receive the next OS release for free. This promo got Apple a lot of sales depending on what they had in stock and what they could ship till its financial quarter ended. It is called marketing to stimulate sales near the end of a quarter by enticing a purchase for a perceived item. What other OS are you going to install Linux, Windows. You are given an OS preinstalled. I like :apple: HW, does that mean I need to be forced with :apple: SW, this argument can be made as well.

Be honest with this situation, Apple wanted to have a good fiscal quarter so they offered a treat. Rather than handle this two weeks before release they decided to wait till the last minute and then send out the same code multiple times. When I make a promise to do a job, I do it to what is expected. If I screw it up, I either get fired or do not get my incentive.

This is a screw up on :apple: part. I would have preferred a gift card rather than hassle through this process.

Let's get one thing perfectly clear. The upgrade to the OS That was built for the new machines we just paid $2000-$4000 for but wasn't ready yet is NOT free. It is built into the inflated cost we paid for the hardware. It was an advertised and agreed on part of the deal.

Stop acting as though this is some kind of charity and we are all just ungrateful freeloaders. It is far from it. Fortunately Apples attitude hasn't degenerated so far to the point where they sound like you. When that happens it really will be over.
