That's not true. I downloaded ML with the code for my MBP Retina, which hasn't arrived yet and installed it on my Mac Pro without any problems.

Glad it isn't true, really, because if the app store / installer could do that then why have people enter anything in a form at all, they could just grab my serial, check the purchase date with Apple, and go on with it.

That's what I kind of expected to happen actually - a dialog saying "Are you using your new retina MacBook Pro? If so, you might be eligible for a free upgrade to ML. Do you mind if I check this with Apple's servers? (Y/N)".

Still waiting to receive my code :p

ditto.

probably didn't help I used the US page, and got my address wrong, I didn't realize there are country-specific up to date program pages... oh, well. But since I bought it in the Apple online store, all they need to do is check my serial and name...

Submitted my request about 6 hours ago. No code, no e-mail, nothing. I'm sorry, but I'm totally frustrated. I love new releases and I always get them right away. That is my thing, I don't care if it's probably "smarter" to wait first bug fixes. I love to dive deep and explore everything. But now I see happy tweets from my friends "sent from Mountain Lion" and I feel like idiot with no invitation to party. :)

And why on earth this had to be so stupid and complicated? This is NOT Apple "just works" way. It should be trivial for Apple to see that I'm on a new mid-2012 MacBook Pro and offer immediate free download link in the Mac App Store. This whole request system is stupid, complicated and Microsoft-like, even if it worked. But since it doesn't, this makes this whole mess even more disgusting.

PS - Yes I feel entitled. When I purchased the new MBP, I was promised a free update to Mountain Lion.
I know, I'll get my copy soon (probably just purchase it... 16 EUR is very cheap, true) and I will forget this whole thing and be happy about my new Mac, but for right now, this day is ruined for me.

OK, yesterday I gave up and went to sleep. This morning nothing has changed - 18 hours have passed, not a single message from Apple. I decided no to wait any longer, just purchased the damn thing.

Download was very quick though, no more than 30 minutes.

I don't want another hassle with requesting refunds, but I really hope I will be able to gift my unused redeem code (when I finally get it) to my sister.

I filled in the Up-To-Date program form within moments of the page coming up - back when the Macbook Air wasn't even on the list of computers that the serial number related to. I had to say the number was related to a Macbook. Not only that but from the labelling on the address form and the format of the phone number field on that form, it was clearly built only for the American market in mind. I had to bodge my phone number.

I'm still waiting 18 hours later.

I'm not sure anywhere during the whole process does it tell you how long you could wait for a response. Very poorly, you don't even get a confirmation email noting your request. It all just disappears in to the ether.

Is my request being processed? I don't know. If it is, how long will it be before I receive my code? I don't know.

Very, very poor service from Apple. Has this been set up by the team that originally worked on Mobile Me that Steve was pissed at? There are so many ways the process could have been made better. The simplest of being, keep the current process but have kicked it off a decent amount of time before the release of Mountain Lion. At least that way there would have been time to iron out any kinks and those eager to get the OS as soon as possible would have had their codes prior to release.

Tim should be questioning what's gone on here.

They state that it can take up to 24 hours before your application is processed - i'm waiting aswell, 14 hours here, and i know there is a whole lot of people who are in the position, dont worry - we will recieve one sooner or later

Hi guys,

I'm new with Mac, please could anybody tell me: I bought my Macbook Air on June, 23 and got it with Lion and would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Does the upgrade also replace the image on a hidden partition used to restore it later from "OS X Recovery" ?

I mean, if some day I need to restore a clean system, pressing Control-R during the startup and getting to the OS X Recovery, will this reinstall Lion or Mountain Lion?

Thank you!

Reason for 24-72 hour timeframe...

So I called Apple Support (seems a few people had success in receiving their updated redeem codes soon after a call).

I quoted my reference number from the email with the dodgy redeem code. The dude on the call was very helpful and said that my codes were updated and processed for sending to me and were "in line" for being emailed. I should receive it in 24-72 hours. He said Apple are protecting their servers from a download meltdown, by not giving everyone access and downloading at once...

Can't believe they made it so difficult

Simple, buy a Mac on or after June 11, 2012, once payment is made, Apple could instantly send a code redeemable at the App Store within the invoice for download Mountain Lion when the date arrives. That's it!

Why all this absurd and complicated process, they have the database of buyers and their contact info... why ask for serial number, model and dates??

Oh well, after 15 hours still haven't received my code, not than I'm in a hurry, but will be nice if I can get it before the weekend.

"download meltdown" woooow!

come on apple! its a shame!

if its true, stop sells on MAS and, send all codes correctly first!

shame...

Finally!

Sendt the application yesterday and got my code after 10 minutes. Did not work.
Now, 18 hours later I got a new code and am currently downloading ML.

Norway, using the norwegian Apple Online Store.

FYI I've just received a new redeem code from Apple. I'll give you the timeline to get this new code:

  • 07/25 at 2pm GMT submitted the form for the Mountain Lion up-to-date program
  • 07/25 at 3pm GMT received the PDF file with the redeem code
  • 07/25 at 6pm GMT tried to use the redeem code only to see that the code was already used
  • 07/25 at 6.30pm GMT opened a support ticket with Apple
  • 07/25 at 7.30pm received a response from an Apple representative saying to contact them again in 5-7 days if I don't get a new code by then (see my post on page 7 of this thread)
  • 07/26 at 9.15am received a new PDF file with the new redeem code

I'll test the new code when I get home from work later on. I'll keep you posted.

I'm still 20 hours out and haven't received the first email from apple. I filled out the form as soon as the page went live and again 6 hours later when I saw that I still had not received an email.

Since I bought the computer from apple.com I sent in a screenshot of apple's email receipt to me.

This all seems very silly to me.

But he did say that they were protecting the server load to avoid what happened previously when Lion went live.
Let's hope that rep was guessing, because that sounds like a weird and unfair way to handle server load.

I bought my retina MacBook Pro several weeks ago with the promise of getting Mountain Lion as soon as it was released. Why should that put me behind those buying it now?

18 hours and waiting (in a rural vacation location with broadband access only a few set hours every day - soon the window closes for today...).

I have been waiting 20 hours so far now and still no first email as well. :/

20 hours later and no code for me either.

Friggin' Apple. Is this the way they treat their customers?

At this point, why not just let us buy the damn software and then refund us?

I have a contact at Apple corporate that I just fired an email off to, but I don't expect any help.

Replacement code arrived here. Still in the clunky, protected PDF but at least this one works because I'm downloading it now.

I didn't contact Apple about the code issue yesterday so they must be resending automatically. The email had no explanation why it was being resent, it was the exact same wording as yesterday; which is confusing for anyone not keeping up with Internet user responses.

No code yet. I submitted the form seconds after the page went live yesterday (1:45 UK time). anyone from the UK received their code?
