Yep, everything except the MacBook is due for overdue for an update (and some WAY overdue). I have friends asking me for recommendations and I tell them there isn't a single Mac I'd buy right now unless I absolutely had to. While the MacBook is "new", I can't recommend it anyone with only a single port.
I think the single port issue is very user specific. I know in all the years i have rocked my 15' port loaded machine i have used the power port and maybe a jump drive yes i aware oh but wait you just used 2 ports. This is out weighed by what i just had to spend on a new macbook pro charger due to the cable failing. So i can deal with a dongle every now and again.

I can not recommend it to people who are not into the home cloud / content creators

If you mean a substantial update it's been well over 400 days.

Dell, HP, Lenovo as well as many other suppliers have 13-inch and 15-inch laptops with better performance and better screens than Apple. They have been out for a year or more.

It doesn't look like we will see new MBPs until macOS is out of Beta as the new function keys will need it. So when does macOS get finished? Apple says the FALL so I suppose September maybe October. Who knows. The analysts sure don't have any idea.

If the new MBPs were to be released in September wouldn't hardware production need to start soon?

it would be nice if it was released for back to school. But it sounds like it'll be in the September-October realm after school starts. My daughter wants a Mac to take to college. I'm making her pay for part of it. Hard to part with that much cash for an outdated system....
Yep, I could not wait because I needed ASAP for work. Got an used 2015 MBP and will sell once the new ones come out.

I think i might pick up a macbook to tide us over and give us something ultra light for trips.

The decline can as typical be attributed partially to seasonal fluctuations and increased competition, but many prospective buyers are patiently waiting for Apple to release its next-generation MacBook Pro and other refreshed Macs.

I am not patiently waiting. I am waiting very *impatiently*. Agree with the comment "get your **** together, Apple.

But not all universities start at the same time; Michaelmas term at my alma mater was always at the start of October.

True - but Apple is running a huge 'Back to School' promotion right now. They could take advantage of school calendars that start August through October rather than capture part of the market in time and leave a huge part of their US based customers with 'buyer's remorse'.

Pretty impressive that they even sold that many outdated computers.
I'm wondering if anyone over at Apple is really surprised by this? No updates on the machines and terrible reviews for El Capitan in the App store don't sound like they've given Macs a lot of love.

I'm also going to go out on a limb here and predict that releasing a new rMBP with only 1 kind of port, (even if there are 4 USB-C) is not going to go over well with the I-hate-dongles crowd. Apple seems to have lost their way as far as making things easy and simple to use. It's one thing to push the next great thing, it's another to make it expensive and inconvenient to use it. One of the only things Windows does right is backward compatibility. If they made a new Mac with USB-C AND USB 3.0 and an SD card slot, I'd probably buy one.

If I have to buy dongles, or throw away all my hard drives and thumb drives, and buy all new backup drives, I'm going to pass. I'm sure I'm not the only one on the planet that feels this way. We'll see if the numbers six months from now back that up.

Wow... so you're saying Apple can't just sell the same old stuff forever and keep the prices as is? :O
Quick, someone tell Timmy. /facepalm

I have saved pretty much an entire laptop's worth of money, because I am still using my 2012 MBPr 15"; I used to have an excuse to get a new MBP every 2-3 years, now I am looking at 4-5.

Huge? It's just free headphones with an outdated Mac, right? (At least most are outdated)

Maybe they want to get rid of the outdated machines first...

You guys do understand that the development time and process for a watchband is a little less than designing a new motherboard around a new processor?
If Dell, HP, ASUS and others can poop out new models all the time it can't be that hard.

Regardless, until Apple (and others) stop putting those useless microscopic up and down arrow keys in their keyboards, I ain't buying. Period.
