If you mean a substantial update it's been well over 400 days.

Dell, HP, Lenovo as well as many other suppliers have 13-inch and 15-inch laptops with better performance and better screens than Apple. They have been out for a year or more.

It doesn't look like we will see new MBPs until macOS is out of Beta as the new function keys will need it. So when does macOS get finished? Apple says the FALL so I suppose September maybe October. Who knows. The analysts sure don't have any idea.

If the new MBPs were to be released in September wouldn't hardware production need to start soon?

Apple has always been the esthetically more pleasing alternative with superior operating platform. Windows 10 is catching up though and PC makers are finally starting to put out some seriously elegant looking machines. That gap is really closing and Apple needs to be even more aggressive and competitive, not less.

Instead, they invented collapsable message bubbles and new emojis. That'll show'em! :D

We're going to have to deal with the reality that Apple doesn't want to make computers anymore. It's been over a year for even a worthwhile spec upgrade in most cases, and many, many years since they've done anything innovative (in any product line). But way to go with the emojis. I didn't know I needed big emojis, but apparently, I did.

This is the exact reason I purchased an Lenovo

I have a Skylake ThinkPad X260 for work and I've got to admit that it's awesome. i7, 16GB ram, 256GB SSD, great keyboard and fully user-serviceable and has a great docking station for IO. Cost less than the rMacbook too.

I added a new battery to my macbook as it was a better investment than purchasing any of the 'new' macs.

The asus zenbook is looking nice though, could replace my netbook and macbook in one go.

That thought has crossed my mind too.

Yep, no wonder. Apple hasn't paid much attention to the Mac. Just look at the Buyer's Guide on MR and it's pretty depressing how outdated across the board all Macs are. Pretty embarrassing IMO.
Yes, the MR Buyers guide is telling a pretty sad tale these days. I'm stuck needing to buy a bunch of new laptops, and have been waiting, with the budget approved for them, since last year. I've just had to buy another refurb MBA to tide us over. The loss of energy around the Mac is palpable now, and very sad. Apple seem to have totally forgotten that there is a real need to keep some energy and excitement, and a feeling of continuing evolution in the Mac as a product. Even more frustrating that Apple have let the whole scenario go so flat, when they had been doing so well in terms of market share and sales generally. Even a rusted on Mac zealot like me is starting to wonder how long I can hold out here. I've never had so much pre-approved budget to spend, with such an uninspired, stale range of Macs to choose from. If refreshed MBPs are being held back because of the rumoured removal of the headphone port in the iPhone 7 (and presumably other Apple products), I'll be really pissed. I mean, who cares!

Good stats for those who keep defending Tim Cook as an amazing CEO.

The evidence is starting to mount.

First Apple stops innovating, which then leads to crappy products, and now we see market shares decline... It really is time for him to go!

The board needs to oust him as soon as possible before it's too late!

I think the company's out of touch and they're starting to believe their own rhetoric that a mobile device is enough computing power for most people and the touch-based experience is better.

Either that or us nerds on Macrumors represent the old guard and Apple is actually happy to let it's traditional computer business slowly die until so few people buy Macs (or specific product lines they don't like) that they can justify axing them.

Way for Apple to respond to this is to release a barrage of new Mac models in Mini, Mac Pro, iMac, MacBook and MacBook Pro that make us want to buy. Each of the five flavors has their own niche and Apple's been holding back enhancements for each one's strengths.

Mac Pro needs to recapture it's old position as best expansion model. Mini is the server for small needs but it is waiting for expansion capability again.

iMac - would be nice if the hardware allowed memory updating again and SSD updates too; it is plenty thin.

Mac laptops - I'm sure Apple has plenty to roll out. Do it.

Yesssss! But alas, the last few updates have been glued and soldered together on purpose. Then Apple announces that they only expect their Macs to last 3 years. I think that despite Tim's eco-friendly bla bla bla, he is making throw-away computers. They can't be upgraded, or repaired easily. What other message does that send?

If you were running Apple, and you wanted to get out of the PC business, would you make an announcement? Stop selling everything right away?

No.

You'd keep selling what you've got as long as it sells, because the profit margin gets bigger as time goes on. By the time sales slow to a craw, your customers have moved on to other brands. And if you ever want to change your mind, you just introduce a new model, crank up the promotion machine again, and say you've been so hard at work on these "incredible" products.

I think Apple's getting out of computers entirely. Just sayin'!

i cant believe 4 million people buy 400 days old machine, for over 1000$, it is absolute waste of money

I bought a top spec rmbp at the beginning of June. Its a great machine that does what I need it to (Cinema 4D, FCPX, Photoshop etc...) and works with my 4K display @60Hz no problem, so no need to wait for who knows what and when Apple will release next. Chances are the next release could be inferior, maybe the quad core will be gone, for sure there will be less ports, Apple are more concerned with weight and size than power, so the current rmbp could be last workstation laptop they sell, no one knows.

Having the latest of anything isn't important, its what you do with it. I certainly haven't wasted my money, I've had 2 months of freelance work using it.

The main problem is the majority of Apple users don't know or don't care about specs and Apple knows.

Think about it, they are still selling millions of devices with three (and four-year old) hardware at premium prices. Where is their incentive to update their computer line year-on-year?

Tim Cook is a supply-chain guy and I think he's looking at Intel's soaring silicon prices and supply shortfalls versus their marginal year-on-year performance improvements and is wondering why Apple's hitched its wagon to that lot.
