He’s absolutely right.

Which is going to ruffle a truckload of feathers before they day ends.

And likely other competitors are already seeking on what they can do to implement similar features like Face ID. Apple is a trendsetter, and I'm curious to see where other competitors take more aspects similar
To Face ID.

Yeah, he said the same thing about wireless charging 4 years ago? As in, all current implementation of qi is lame and not truly wireless, then we get the same exact thing in X.

I very rarely have failure with Face ID. With touch ID version 1 quite a lot to be honest.

I see Face ID similarly to how touch ID started. Face ID is fairly accurate and it is almost instantaneous when using it, but just like touch ID, it will continue to refine with the sensors and overall accuracy, and the machine learning process will continue to develop.

FaceID sucks when you are in bed and part of the pillow hides your face. Overall, I still think the X is the best phone I've ever owned. This really needs to be address though.

It is a very common use case. It is very easy for a human to still identify someone in the same situation. We should demand better.
Oh my god. I thought it was just me.

Just curious, but isn't this kind of like saying TouchID sucks when you put a piece of tape over 1/2 of your fingerprint and then try to scan it?

While I would love to be able to use it in landscape, I think there are times when Touch ID isn't as usable as Face ID. Specifically cold weather when I'm wearing gloves, I love Face ID for that. I might change my mind when spring gets here, but for now Face ID is much more convenient.

... and once the phone is unlocked, how do you navigate round a touch screen with gloves on?.. exactly.

Curious though, why do you need it in landscape mode? I rarely ever used my phone in landscape mode right after it's been unlocked.

It's just annoying sometimes how Face ID doesn't work if you're not parallel to the phone.

Basically, Face ID sucks less.

And:

"developers have no third-party access to Face ID data"
Until someone (like Uber) figures out a way to crack it. And if it is a big boy like Uber, they'll get a "sit down" with Tim. Anyone else, and you're done.

Phil Schiller is a tech illiterate used car salesman much like Steve Baller. At least he has public speaking skill unlike the other tech illiterate used car salesman Tim Cook.

Face ID only works because security is so loose that it misidentifies non-identical family members as the same person.

Phil's not wrong, they all do suck and Apple's implementation is by far the best.

That said, I still don't think facial recognition is the best way to unlock a smartphone period, no matter how well it's implemented.

Apple does innovate on many things, but not the Mac Lineup. I miss MagSafe and various other things that are very relevant now and in the future. I’m not one of those who still wants floppy drives or headphone jacks (those are outdated). MagSafe is not a geriatric concept.

Agree, I get a lot more failed unlocks compared to Touch ID. And it’s a bit annoying that it’s not usable in landscape mode. In terms of usability not an improvement over a Touch ID at all.
When will you understand FaceID is not ONLY a replacement for TouchID? TouchID did one thing...the tech behind FaceID will do MANY things and improve.

It's pretty darn impressive for a 1.0 and TouchID wasn't perfect (Gloves, dirt, wet hands, etc).

I don’t understand why people have a hard time with FaceID. When you set Face ID up did you do it outside or a room with plenty of light?

The only time it fails for me is when laying in bed cuddled in blankets (laying sideways) this is gen 1 people, it’ll get better. And if someone made a 3D mask of my face to gain access to my iPhone id give him a high five and applaud that he/she got in. You’ve hit the mother load of amateur nudes and homemade adult films. All I ask is send Apple Pay *the struggle is real (kidding)

Anyways it'll get better in the future, its gen 1 people don't forget that.

Look up Windows Hello. It sounds like the IR depth scan isn't as good as Face ID but it does have Iris scanning which Face ID does not have. Yet. I think that's pretty good for a 2 year old tech and certainly not "stink" as Phil had put it.

And I had more initial failures from TouchID. And that was with re-registering my thumbs once a month or so.

So far, FaceID has been flawless for me. Kind of surprised, especially considering it’s FaceID’s first release.

They’re not as good as Face ID, that’s for sure.

But Face ID isn’t perfect, either.

No kidding. I love Face ID, but it needs a wider angle capability as it simply doesn't work if you hold it too close to your face.

Also, AirPods are superb, and I love them, but they're so buggy it's hilarious. So often either they don't connect immediately, have up to a 45-second delay when connecting, or simply don't connect at all if they don't feel like it without me having to put them back in the case and take them back out. They're just flat-out annoying when this happens. Not to mention when they connect and then immediately disconnect. That's a fun one. Oy...

And before anyone says anything, yes, this is with several AirPods sets (my wife has a set, too), and with several phones - iPhone 7 and iPhone X.

Which goes to show you how promising Face ID will be for the future, given how well it operates and functions currently. And we all know Apple will continue to mold and refine Face ID from this point forward. But its certainly a strong start.

Um, the reason it asks you for your password is that it will do more biometrics of your face. Mine is getting easier and easier to unlock and FASTER bc I understand it's reasoning for not "just" unlocking. I'd rather it not be so easy at times. When I first got it I got angered that it would not unlock while I am driving., Now if my phone is on it's stand in the center of my console, if the phone is pointed at me it unlocks perfectly each time. So those of you that want to participate in making your FACE ID work properly, simply see the refusal as the machine learning option that it is and let go of the anger and just enter your password. You will thank yourself later...
