It's just annoying sometimes how Face ID doesn't work if you're not parallel to the phone.
This is what's weird to me. There's been times where I haven't been parallel to the phone, and it has unlocked, unless it picked up my face as I was raising it. Almost to the point where I've questioned whether it's working at all. But no one else has been able to get in my phone etc.

I was extremely skeptical of Face ID, but now that I have it and have used it for a few days, I gotta admit it's pretty nice and not near the jolting habit-changer I thought it would be.

That said, sunglasses are creating a problem for me unfortunately. If I turn off the attention requirement, it works *maybe* half the time with my sunglasses. Otherwise it doesn't work at all. I currently have a $30 pair of Ironman sunglasses, though I'm set to get a pair of Oakley Half Jacket's for Christmas... (neither are polarized). I'm hoping it works better with the Oakley's...

It's creating a situation where the X is great at home or in my office. But the times I need it to be the most convenient - driving and/or out and about - it's a PITA compared to Touch ID... so far anyway.

Phil Schiller is a tech illiterate used car salesman much like Steve Baller. At least he has public speaking skill unlike the other tech illiterate used car salesman Tim Cook.

Face ID only works because security is so loose that it misidentifies non-identical family members as the same person.

Everything you just said is a lie.

I rarely ever used my phone in landscape mode right after it's been unlocked.
Nice for you, but not for all others. You're no reference. I use my iPhone 7 Plus many times in landscape mode, especially with Safari tab bar or in the mail app.

Many smart users use the camera in landscape mode. But ok, there so many videos in portrait mode...

FaceID is ok for iPhones. Prefering TouchID because its simple and cheaper.
i prefer TouchID for iPads because of multi use (wishing multi profiles)
For macOS TouchID is the only way because of multi profiles.

Been using the X for two weeks now, I can’t really say it’s better/faster than Touch ID. It feels really first gen.

Top 3 most annoying situations when it fails most of the time:
1. Laying in bed with a stuffed pillow (have to lean head a little forward)
2. When I wake up and eyes are super squinty
3. Looking at the phone from an angle

Touch ID on my 7 is so much faster to open. I would recommend people to wait for fAceID to improve in the next gen or 3rd gen X

I have to say I still love Touch ID and haven’t even seen Face ID in person yet. However, over the course of a day there are several times each day where my hands are wet and it doesn’t work. Face ID seems like it would be great for this.

Think Different is what MS did with the Surface Studio. Perhaps not implemented perfectly, but certainly more courage than simply rolling a more powerful iMac (Pro) in Space Grey.

I still recall Jobs unveiling of the G4 iMac. They didn't have to given the popularity and success of the G3 iMacs, but they challenged themselves to do better. I feel today's Apple is less apt to try new bold directions, but rather play safe with boring incremental updates to decades old designs.

An earpod is a computer now?

What's next the charging cable?

AirPods have a micro controller inside them. A 32bit ARM running at 48MHz. Do you remember the processors used in the first Macs and PCs? They are absolutely computers. Just very small and performing a specific task.

Sure, Phil.

Note8's iris scanner is faster than Face ID. It's at the 9:45 mark.

You mean the iris scanner that can be easily fooled with a picture and disposable contact lens?

Plus this video is very deceiving. Anyone with an iPhone X knows you can swipe up before the padlock animation up top is finished and your phone will be unlocked.

Agree, I get a lot more failed unlocks compared to Touch ID. And it’s a bit annoying that it’s not usable in landscape mode. In terms of usability not an improvement over a Touch ID at all.
I agree with the landscape mode thing being annoying, but I had Touch ID fail WAY more in a week then Face ID as ever failed on me since Nov. 3. And living in Canada, being able to wear Touch sentive gloves and use my phone without ever taking it off is a blessing! For me Face ID is my favourite feature ever

It stinks when 5T's twice as fast. Thanks for the laughs, Phil.

It stinks when people think opening Apps is a test of performance.

It’s like testing video gaming cards and only measuring the time a game gets to the main screen, and forgetting to actually measure FPS with the settings turned up.

iPhone X or iPhone 8 slaughters everything out there. Try doing some 4K video rendering or editing photos and watch the others fall so far behind the A11 it’s actually embarrassing.

Filip Koroy (EverythingApplePro) who has more iPhones than my local Apple Store posted two videos that showed that 5T and Note8 biometric scanners are faster than Face ID. And he leaked iPhone X for months.

Lewis Hilsenteger (Unbox Therapy) even stated he prefers the 5T's direct to the homescreen over that added step that iPhone X requires. If they all stink Phil when they have shown to be faster to unlock, then Face ID stinks worse like a rotting dead rat which smells worse than skunk.

Imo it’s a little narrow minded to think serially opening apps is a robust performance test. I take more stock in 4K video editing, JavaScript tests etc.

Iris Scanner isn’t facial scanner. Your eyes are on your face, but your face is more than your eyes.

Speed isn’t the only metric. The 5T uses a method of using a 2D camera to judge the distance between several points on your face. That makes it less secure.

Yeah, he said the same thing about wireless charging 4 years ago? As in, all current implementation of qi is lame and not truly wireless, then we get the same exact thing in X.
No, that’s not what he said at all. Nothing about Qi not being “truly wireless” because of course, it is truly wireless.

He said “wireless charging systems still have to be plugged into the wall, so it’s not clear how much convenience they add.... Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated.”

Completely accurate in 2012. Fast forward five years, and with three (soon) wireless devices, it’s now quite clear exactly how much convenience wireless charging adds to the Apple ecosystem.

You’ll only have to deal with a charging cable once—when you plug in Apple’s mat right after your purchase. From then on, you don’t have to worry about plugging in anything, saving yourself the hassle thousands of times over the next few years. Just put your phone, watch and AirPod case on the mat before you go to bed. Now that's convenience :)

If we were still talking about just the phone, as he was in 2012, people would still be wondering whether having to put your phone down in a certain spot on a mat is really any more convenient than having to plug it in in a certain spot with a cable.

But Apple’s created a wireless ecosystem that guarantees a very high degree of user convenience. Truly wireless charging with Apple’s mat will be a great experience. And yes, you’ll have to plug the mat into a power source. So you’ll still have to touch a cable every few years.

Touch ID version 1 wasn't perfect, either. :)

The problem is that Touch ID version 1 was better than what we had before. Face ID version 1 is worse than what we had before. There was no rush to put it on the phone. They could have improved it (if it's possible) before replacing Touch ID

They have to start somehere. FaceID will only get better as time go on. Maybe V2 next year.
