How far is your commute that your phone wont get you to work on a single charge?
Was wondering the same thing... does he have a charger in his jacket since he doesn't want to disturb anyone, he has to be in public transit or walking :)

THIS! It's ridiculous! And what if you're on the streets, charging with a powerbank and want to listen to music or call at the same time??

Simple. Bluetooth headphones.

Don't want Bluetooth headphones? Too bad. Don't buy an iPhone.

I will simply reply with the following:

Your World:

1. USB for external hard drive
2. Another USB for syncing your phone
3. HDMI port for watching movies onto your flatscreen
4. SD Card slot for your digital camera
5. Wired Headphones
6. Charging port for the obvious

Apple's World:

1. Time Capsule storage (no cables)
2. iphone sync over wifi (no cables)
3. Apple TV airplay for displaying onto your flatscreen (no cables)
4. iCloud for photos you took on your iphone (no cables)
5. AirPods (no cables)
6. Charging port (yes, still need this one cable)

1) Just make damn sure you don't suspend the machine while it's backing up or you'll corrupt the time capsule.
2) Even slower than USB 2.0 - two day sync anyone?
3) Apple TV still needs cables to connect to the TV itself
4) Assuming you trust iCloud with your confidential and personal information - and don't want to print, edit, or do other things with them.
5) If you don't care about sound quality, being able to be active with headphones, or listen to music more than 4 hours a day.
6) Yep, until they go to contactless charging, which completely hoses anyone who uses more than one charge a day (like working in a fringe area, using a GPS/navigation app, watching movies, or playing a game)

Apple's world extends to walking between buildings on the campus in Cupertino, going back into an office, and working at a desk.

Not directed at anyone in particular.

I'll tell where my pent up distaste with Apple comes from is the amount of years and money that I have spent/invested in the ecosystem - an ecosystem that continues to evolve with some changes that leave me hanging. So while it's real easy for you to say Don't like it, walk; reality is much different.

That's my personal distaste.

Boy that'll work really well on an airplane.

Wireless headphones work brilliantly on a plane. In fact for me improve my comfort - no more rolling around getting tangled in wires. No need to take headphones off when you go to the bathroom. No headphone cables getting snagged/pulled out when you adjust the seat. great noise blocking - only slightly less noise reduction than you get with noise cancelling headphones without the increased heat of wearing over the ear noise cancelling headphones.

The fact that Apple itself didn't make a Y connector shows how completely clueless they are.

Here I agree - I was stunned that they didnt make this sort of accessory available. I dont need it but I know that many people will want it.

This is the correct answer to the problem. The thing gets like 10 hours of battery life. Why would you really need to charge and listen? I realize this is just my own personal experience but I have never needed to charge and listen in the history of using iPhones and I've had almost all of them beginning with the 3G. If you really need to charge and listen (or talk on the phone) then use this dock or the myriad of other adapters that will hit the market in the next couple weeks from other manufactures. Or... don't buy an iPhone 7 if this is the big issue. No one is forcing you.

Also... as to the price of the dock... get over it. This is Apple. We pay about $1000 for the iPhone with tax and Apple Care (USA) and you're gonna really whine about an extra $50.00... really? I suppose that sounds entitled or something, but damn, get over it; Apple stuff is expensive and mostly cutting edge and occasionally requires compromise to use their newest stuff. This is not new.

Have you ever been to an airport or travelled by plane for several hours and needed to do emails and phone calls at the airport and then be 6 hrs on the plane and then be in a different city and be on the phone for work? Thats when you appreciate the chance to charge your phone while having telephone calls and charge the phone at the same time during a layover. Then listen to an audiobook to relax and charge your phone while on the plane.

That's also the time when you don't want to carry a stupid dock and a second set of earphones with 3.5mm jack around.

If you look around on airports you find dozens of people charging and talking/listening on their phone around the charging hubs. So this is not a rare special use case.

Also how often have you been in a rental car where you don't have bluetooth and need to talk to clients while driving to some business place? Again with the iPhone 7 you have to carry a dock around or you're going to run out of battery or you can't take calls. Good luck explaining that to a client or business partner.

Also lots of people use external battery chargers on their hours long commutes while listening/talking on their phone.

4-6 hours a day. I fly to customers.

OK - so your phone comfortable lasts six hours. I assume you carry a battery pack (as you charge during your commute as per your earlier post) then. I also assume you dont want to be asking customers for a power point when you get to them (not a professional look). So why not just before you meet with your customer don't plug your phone into your battery pack and leave it charging in your bag/briefcase?

it would work fine on a desk if you don't have a case in the phone, but it doesn't help people with AUX ports in their car.

So let me get this straight - we now have to carry around an adaptor AND a dock with us, just in case we might want to charge and listen to our iPhone at the same time. What about in car use?
Well, if you really have to charge the phone that often in your car and don't have CarPlay, you can use the Belkin adapter instead.

That's what the included, free adapter is for.

I'll be honest, I really don't think I can have a phone without a 3.5mm jack, I use it EVERYWHERE, at home, in my car, at work, etc. I don't want to have to remember my stupid adaptor, its just another clunky thing that I can loose. I have a lot of really high quality audio "things" that use the 3.5 jack. I also like to have my phone plugged into a charger while I am hiking or other areas with terrible quality (skiing anyone?). I REALLY want the new features on the 7, but unfortunately I don't want to upset my entire setup or risk loosing the annoying adapter.

For me, its a deal breaker, I don't want it to be, I think its stupid that it is, but it is and thats that (unfortunately).

Nineteen pages of whine. Wow. Probably not a record, but it's pretty impressive.

Save a little dough and buy an SE if you'll miss the jack more than the features offered by an upgrade to iPhone 7. I do love my SE. I did happen to buy a lightning dock at the time I got the SE, so it seems that I'm already prepared for a switch to a no-jack iPhone 8. The dock is nice!

Usually when I need to listen to music while charging, it's because I'm mobile (e.g., traveling), and am using an external battery to eek out a little extra life from the phone. Incidentally, these are also the scenarios where I choose wired over Bluetooth audio (to conserve battery). The iPhone dock is not a solution. This is deeply disappointing.

On the plus side, there has never been a better time to buy a 128 Gb iPhone 6s (which is precisely what I did an hour ago).
There are other solutions, such as the Belkin adapter for a scenario like this. Seriously, how often does this happen to you? You travel so much there is no way to charge your phone before you travel?

Wait, so you have to buy a 50 dollar accessory that doesn't work with the lightning earbuds included with the iPhone 7?

So you can buy another old earpod with 3.5mm jack, if you don't already have one laying around. Another upselling, nice huh? Gotta give it to Phil :D

Disheartening. Very poor, anti-consumerism choice here by Apple to remove the jack. I am hoping there is a never-ending public outcry.
My concern is that too many people will cave in and buy the phone anyway.

Apple is so influential that many people refuse to think for themselves and let Apple herd them around.

I'm certainly _not_ going to buy an iPhone 7 and hope to be a part of a large group that do not buy either. Time will tell.

Is there a theft protection for these things? I mean anyone can just grab them in a crowded subway and just run out before the doors close. Can I lock them to be used just by the phone it was paired with?

And how about sharing them? Can you pair them with two phones? Or do you have to unpair them first?

You forget, in Apple's wireless world you need to also deal with more batteries, and later on, dead batteries. And do you think something as small as the new Airpod can have its battery replaced? Apple would rather you bin another $159 to replace your otherwise working Airpod.

Not to mention anything wireless (even low energy bluetooth) eats more battery life than good old wired connection. Many other brands can get away with waterproofing while keeping the practicality. If Apple couldn't do it, well I don't know how to call it.

Yea. Now but what headphones do I use?
The lightening pods won't work, because they have no 3.5mm.
They also don't work on my MacBook because the MacBook has no lightening.

Courageous would have been replacing lightening with USB 3.0.
One connector to rule them all. Mac, iPhone, Android, Windows PC.

Well missed that opportunity.
Won't be another one.
Courage.
M.
Apple isn't going to adopt USB-C. You can forget that. It is a consortium driven standard that Apple doesn't have control over.

Are people really worried about someone pulling your headphones out of your ears and stealing them. They would have to lightning (pun intended) fast to rip them out of your ears without you being able to stop them.

The big advantage the AirPods have over other wireless ear buds is their ease of switching between devices - more so than the Dash that I have.

If not now, then once the devices are shipped and people see what they are missing. I am charging my phone right now, while headphones are plugged in. I could not use my phone if it were in a dock, as I am right now while making this post. And I don't want an adapter for my adapter, via Belkin.

The 'solutions' suck because the choice sucks. It's really that simple. Bring it back for iPhone 8.
Get over it. It's gone and not coming back. In fact, other manufacturers will soon follow in Apple's footsteps. Hell, Apple wasn't even the first to ditch the jack to begin with. This reminds me of all of the whining that happened when HDMI hit the home audio market.

have you got some studies showing the difference in battery life performance between current Bluetooth Headphones and wired headphones? My battery gets smashed either through personal hotspot or having the screen on for gaming - playing music through the bluetooth headphones has virtually no impact on battery.
