A different "Hero" version every year is going to make the naming conventions insane. Will the rumoured 20th anniversary iPhone be the iPhone 20? If so, will all that tech be at the forefront of the "standard" model?
Or will there be an iPhone 20, and then an iPhone 20th Anniversary or an iPhone XX?

I worry that this is just a case of throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks.

Unless the Pro line is going to be the Hero version, we're going to need a different name for the iPhone Fold and iPhone Flip and iPhone Air and iPhone XX, alongside the iPhone standard, the iPhone Pro and Pro Max, and maybe the iPhone Air if it stays around.

I absolutely get we need diversification, but I worry that the promise of something totally new coming next year every single year will only make people hold out for their perfect form factor, and then HOPE it gets updated after the initial version.
I think we’ll get a ‘lower rung’ of iPhones that will be the iPhone ‘e’ line, the regular iPhone and then the Air will the top line of the lower rung released every new year.

The September will be the Pro line and I wouldn’t be surprised if these foldables became ‘Ultra’. I do think the anniversary phone will be a totally new name as it will the first of its kind

I don't need a giant, heavy, expensive gadget in my pocket. I just need to take some photos, send some messages, and occasionally talk to someone. Apple is not going to make its next trillion dollars selling these in numbers that will rival the vision pro thingy (selling small numbers of $$$$ gadgets).

I hope they will also continue to release a version that is similar to the current pro phones without the wrap around display. I have no use for such a display and I suspect such a display would noticeably increase its price. I strongly suspect they will since I'm sure I'm far from being unique in this opinion. Otherwise more power to them for trying some new ideas.

The 20th anniversary iPhone sounds fire 🔥! I have the 17 Pro & definitely will skip next years models and then upgrade to XX after that.

None of these foldable versions sound very interesting to me atm though.

I'm more interested in the Z-Flip form factor

I think thats what this is:

"In 2028, the company is planning to debut a clamshell-style vertical foldable with a compact and lightweight design. The foldable is designed with curves on all four edges around the hinge area so the crease blends more naturally into the body, making the fold less noticeable to the eye and hand."

That’s my plan. Silver 17 Pro (1TB) this year to 20/XX Pro Anniversary Edition in 2027. No $3K folding iPhone for me. I’m slightly interested in the smaller folding iPhone, but I’ll have to wait to see what Apple gives us there.

The iPhonebook is supposed to be $2k and an all glass wraparound iPhoneXX is bound to make the ProMax appear a bargain by comparison.

This is reminding me of the iPhone 5 specialtion of the wedged design and other innovations only to deliver the 4S - It would be surprising to see Apple introduce a new form factory every year and create that many options in the iPhone lineup. The Air seems to have lackluster demand based on MR articles, so this may deter Apple from releasing purely cosmetic innovations like the phone with screen on edges, which does not seem to really offer any additional utility. The foldables on the other hand do offer new utility.
i’m still recovering from this one .. iPhone 5 “tear-drop” design

Very interesting. Did not think Apple will have a flip style foldable. Very much looking forward to the 20th anniversary iPhone. Think it will be priced at $1499. Foldable like the Z Fold will be at $1999. Looking forward to seeing it. Hope it will have good cameras unlike the Air. Not so keen on the Flip style iPhone.

After this iOS/iPadOS/macOS 26 debacle, along with the iPhone Air missteps, cheap PM aluminum scratching, there’s no excitement to be had.

Losing faith in Apple and the way they’ve been operating has dashed any optimism for future devices.

Hyper focused on cost cutting and using cheap aluminum after promoting the advantages of titanium just one year earlier brings their hypocrisy to light. With slick words and explanations that convinced the faithful that aluminum was chosen for all the right reasons proves this company knows no shame.

It’s almost like a bait and switch scenario. Remember iPhone 16 Pro Max was built for Apple Intelligence. The promise that many are waiting to be kept.

But hey, let’s forget about that, choose to be gullible and continue to spend more money proving to Apple that we’ll buy anything. Or maybe not.

My hands have not changed size so I will continue to advocate for some smaller phone options.

Buckle up!
Mini fans ain't goin' away
;)
Mini fans most certainly should not give up.

It’s obvious that until now Apple has some reason no matter how weak, for not bringing the mini back. But it could also be argued that some additional revenue even from modest sales still adds to the bottom line.

If they would set their ego aside and bring this model back they might be pleasantly surprised by the resulting reception. Conversely if it’s not well received and sales don’t support it then simply discontinue the phone.
