Thanks for the Airplane Mode tip

I'm able to listen to the podcasts by turning on airplane mode, deleting all the podcasts, and then turning back regular mode.
One thing I noticed that I had turned off all settings for syncing podcasts. But every time I crashed the podcast app those settings got turned on again.
Something in the cloud is screwing with podcasts.
I must admit I no longer rely on Apple's podcast app the way I used to.
Audible's app is much better for my New Yorker subscription.
I just have three podcasts that I listen to regularly.
If this doesn't calm down I will figure out a way to listen to them some other way.
It's funny. The Apple iPod pretty much brought podcasting to the forefront of broadcasting creating an entire genre that hardly existed before.
But Apple seems to have abandoned the service.

Podcasts started crashing after phone reboot - airplane mode fixes

I've just seen this bug this morning after performing a re-boot of my iPhone 5 (latest iOS 7). It was fine yesterday, and as I don't believe there has been any update, it appears to be the re-boot that started this behaviour.

As suggested, activating airplane mode seems to fix the issue.

Poor quality control, Apple!

As others said, downloading Pocket Casts will not only fix the issue, but it will also lead to a better podcasting experience.

PS, apple's podcasting app appears to be working again.

To me it sounds like someone forgot to wrap a network call's return in a data check and something changed on the server. Trying to access a NSDictionary if it's being returned from NSJsonSerialization etc as an Array or such.

The app was working so well, then it crashed as soon as I launched it to listen on my way home from work yesterday. I have since downloaded PodCruncher, although Pocketcast seems to be pretty popular too. I think I'll stick with a third party podcast app until Apple make the Podcast app a default app in iOS 8.

I had this same problem on iOS 6 for months. Finally fixed it by re-downloading the podcasts app. Still kind of buggy but at least it opens!

anyone have any recommendations for another podcast app?

Like a few others have said, Pocket Casts is quite good. Instacast is also very nice and quite reliable. I have been using it now for about 7 months and love it. Nice UI too.

This app is broken in so many ways nowadays, it leaves me wondering why they now want to build it in iOS.

I remember when everything about it was fine - except its GUI. Although I was a huge fan of skeuomorphism, it was wrong, wayyy wrong.

Now with the new app, I am having every possible sync problem in the world. I remember sometimes I had to make a Spotlight search to access my Podcasts, and click on the result, because the app itself wasn't showing them. Plus sometimes the file starts playing for a millisecond and then skips. Works fine in iTunes though... Ughhh !

If only they could just fix everything, I'd be glad to have it installed by default. Never understood why we needed to download it on the App Store in the first place, same for iBooks.

Working fine for me here too. Maybe they did a backend upgrade?

I personally use Castro. I like the fact that I can stream episodes instead of them taking up space. The notifications are great too.

Works ok here, but when the iPhone 5 locks the podcasts stop. Makes it annoying when travelling in the car as the cable works for audio but not power, so the iPhone locks after 5 minutes and needs to be unlocked, the podcast app restarted and the podcast played again.

Glad to see this thread, i thought the problem was just me. I figured that somehow I was doing something wrong either with my settings or other apps (it couldn't be an unripe Apple release - "it just works!" and all that) so I did the hard reset 3 times. Each time the podcast app would work temporarily but inevitably crash / lock up / etc. I went back to just syncing the unheard episodes in my subscriptions via iTunes sync on my iMac, and I can listen again with no problems. The podcast app gets added to the growing folder of apps I don't want but can't delete, (which i believe is called bloatware, but only when on an android or MS device.)

This just started happening for me now.

iOS 7.1.2

I don't believe this, there has to be some mistake. It must be user error.

Apple make the phone, the OS and the app. They have complete control so I'm sure it works without fault.

I bought the Pocket Casts app.
My Apple Podcasts app was not crashing, but I just many small but annoying problems with it.
Pocket Casts works well for me and I deleted the Apple Podcast app.

No one else has this happening any more? Like whenever I kill the app from the multitasking screen and relaunch with an internet connection, it crashes.

It's hard to diagnose fixes because it only crashes when it tries to communicate something to or from a server. That's why airplane mode "fixes" it - it bypasses whatever check it's trying to do.

But it's temporary because eventually it will try to check again. Try killing the app in multitasking and relaunching and see if it's truly fixed.

Mine is still displaying the issue.

This is what worked for me.

shut down podcast app.

Put phone in Airplane mode.

Restart app.

Turn off all subscriptions

Turn Airplane mode off

Then it works fine.

I think it is a glitch in the subscription access that is making it crash but that is just a guess.
