I thought Apple is making their own AI? So why partner with others?
The current rumor is that Apple AI will power things on device, then they’ll use either Google or open AI for web results.

Not sure why anyone is surprised, Apple doesn’t do anything on their own.

A lot of iCloud servers are actually Google’s.
Apple Silicon is produced by TSMC.
Apples displays are produced by Samsung and LG.
Apple‘s cameras are produced by Sony.
Apple Music (Beats Music) Apple News (Texture), iTunes (SoundJam MP), shortcuts (WorkFlow), etc. were all third-party companies integrated into iOS.

So it really shouldn’t surprise anyone that Apple is relying on third parties for their AI efforts as well, it’s pretty much expected.
That’s what Apple does, they don’t really invent anything, they just get the best people and the best companies around to help them turn it into a reality.
Siri was originally accompany bought by Apple that used technology from Nuance.
The software for the original iPod wasn’t even created by Apple, it was something called “PortalPlayer”.

Or what ever companies they have bought that will help them in the future. I am fine with that, but not with any Chinese companies being used.

I imagine it will be Google wanting to continue the duopoly. Could you imagine if it was Baidu? The US authorities would have a field day with that one!

Maybe read the article.
The Chinese companies will be used for Apple AI features… In China.
Not in the US or anywhere else.

Evidently Siri 2.0 has failed in the lab and the keynote is looking rather drab at this point.

or

They tried to import the car AI into Siri and it can only respond "Turn left, turn left."

Turn left! Turn left!

The game is afoot, and we have no idea what game it is. That Apple is pursuing some objective is obvious. What we don't know is what the goal of these discusions is. Are they pursuing the licensure of an underlying model/architecture, or that plus the weights to be run on their own servers? Are they outsourcing fully? Are they doing something else entirely like trying to get others to pay them to be linked to iPhones.

I could see them trying to license an architecture, like they license ARM's instruction set. That makes the most sense. But you would think that it is to late to implement that sort of thing for 2024.

This is too bad, but I assume that if I keep Siri off (which is how I have it set now because it sucks) these features will just stay off.

Imagine Apple partners with Google.

THAT uncle Google. THAT privacy unfriendly Google. Quite an interesting look that would create.
Me listening to Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra while using the AI feature.

🧑"Keep this query private, Siri."
🖥️"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
🧑"What's the problem?"
🖥️"I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do."
🧑"What are you talking about, Si--😲

I think it's code named "apple clippy"

It would be hilarious if, after all of this, they just went with Google's AI. Apple's phones and Samsung's phones would be powered by the same AI technology! :p

iOS 18 is probably going to be 100+ minor fixes, handful of new features, and a basic Siri… 😂

Oh and of course more bugs!!1!

Apple is a system integrator. It always has been. It does its own system software, designs and orders hardware from vendors.

Same as Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. Except Apple does its own O/S and those do not.

This is how the world works.

One thing needs to be clarified: Baidu will be the AI partner for Apple only in the mainland of China, excluding other Chinese territories. Remaining regions of China (Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan) and rest of the world enjoy the integration of Google and OpenAI. Have a great day!
