It only proves that Apple sucks for developing AI.

Spoken like a true expert in the field!

There are many different types of AI, not just one. We've now entered a world of "generative AI", which is just the latest flavour of AI to become popular. All Apple devices have had various types of AI (machine learning) in place for years, and they work exceptionally well.

When the iPhone was first released in 2007, the on-screen keyboard was unique in that it "learned" where you were tapping and would figure out which key you were actually aiming for. It would adapt the invisible key layout to match that. That's a form of machine learning that Apple created .... 17 years ago... go figure!

The current rumor is that Apple AI will power things on device, then they’ll use either Google or open AI for web results.

Not sure why anyone is surprised, Apple doesn’t do anything on their own.

A lot of iCloud servers are actually Google’s.
Apple Silicon is produced by TSMC.
Apples displays are produced by Samsung and LG.
Apple‘s cameras are produced by Sony.
Apple Music (Beats Music) Apple News (Texture), iTunes (SoundJam MP), shortcuts (WorkFlow), etc. were all third-party companies integrated into iOS.

So it really shouldn’t surprise anyone that Apple is relying on third parties for their AI efforts as well, it’s pretty much expected.
That’s what Apple does, they don’t really invent anything, they just get the best people and the best companies around to help them turn it into a reality.
Siri was originally accompany bought by Apple that used technology from Nuance.
The software for the original iPod wasn’t even created by Apple, it was something called “PortalPlayer”.

Mostly true, but not quite. iTunes came to the Mac first, not iOS first. By the time it came to iOS, it was truly an Apple app.

Apple does have TSMC do the chip build, but the design is Apple's.
Apple does have Sony produce cameras, but to Apple's precisely-engineered specifications.
Apple does have Samsung produce displays, but only those that meet Apple's strict standards leave the factory.
Batteries for their devices are created in unique shapes specific to their devices. They don't build the device around the shape and size of off-the-shelf batteries.

This is a client-supplier relationship, with Apple deeply involved along every step of the process. The world wouldn't work without it.

Apple does invent plenty, but not everything. Invention happens at many layers of the design and build process. That's why patents exist... to protect the knowledge owned by the holder.

If its google… I will be disabling as many AI features as possible… and if i cant.. I might just stop buying Apple stuff.

Apple took longer to join the RCS movement because they wanted to make sure that Google would _not_ retain control over the messaging flow. The same will be the case here, I'm sure. Apple will make sure that Google doesn't have access to Apple users' request and responses. Google tech without the Google eyes. At least that's my hope.

You'd surely think all this would have been well & truly resolved by now and software engineers would be busy integrating whatever partner they chose into iOS 18/macOS 15 rather than shoehorning it in at the last minute or via a 18.3 software update or whatever.
I know, it's similar to people getting excited Apple bought 30 AI companies in 2023. How exactly are you integrating all these companies, tech and personal in a year for iOS 18?

Apple rarely talks about a product before it's released but we keep seeing them talk about AI. This whole thing smells like they are rushing to play catch after getting caught with their pants down.

Also, wasn't Siri suppose to be the main interface for the Apple Car? If the project started in 2014, how the hell were we still hearing rumors the Siri team was a complete mess just a year ago?

Apple is working on AI
Apple is partnering with Google to provide some AI features.
Both things can be true at the same time.
Google Maps was the default maps app on iPhone until 2012 (and, arguably, should have been for a bit longer).
It would then seem that Apple might "only" need a partner for creating iOS 18's new Siri and not for the rest of its current AI efforts.

Conversely, Apple is critically(!) dependent on a partner, like Google, who can provide a data set that's large enough to make next generation Siri real and somewhat reliable.

And on that note -If Apple is only now making deals with partners for next gen. Siri and AI is the big focus of iOS 18 then it's probably going to be the most "Coming later."-ridden iOS we've seen to date.

I hope I'm wrong on that.

FFS, please don’t use Baidu. I don’t like any of these options, but using China for this has the possibility of being a HUGE privacy risk.

I don’t think they’re caught of guard per sé. They’ve been doing machine learning stuff for years. I think they’re caught off guard by the hype.
If that were the case, they would just release some of the internal stuff and wow everyone.

Apple does not have anything to release in the AI field, so they'll prop up the Keynote with something that sounds "Amazing" according to Cook, but will be fulfilled by a really bad implementation that Apple will then work the next 12 months after the keynote trying to save face.

As long as Cook gets his invite to the Oscars, nothing else matters.

I wonder if some of this is linked to keeping their image squeaky clean. I’m not dismissing Apple being far behind in developing AI and the infrastructure, but perhaps this is also linked to the damage control Google is doing right now with Gemini and it’s image results.
Should Apple implement AI and it flubs something somewhere they are painted in a negative light. This way, leasing the AI, allows them to defer blame to someone else. More of a CYA (Cover Your Apple) move

You and your Tim Oscar schtick😂. LLM’s were in development for a long time. It was OpenAI opening it up to the public with a chatbot that created the hype. I know because we were using early versions of LLMs (and other ML methods) at work. The trick is to find good curated data sources for those LLMs and build applications beyond the party trick chatbots. I am 100% sure that Apple had access to these tools; their focus was and still is really on on-device AI applications.

On another note: OpenAI took a risk using publicly available information from the internet seemingly without caring too much about IP, trademarks or copyrights. They can expect a lot of lawsuits. Google had a more careful approach I think and also has other AI tricks up their sleeve. My money is on Google providing cloud based AI services to Apple as an extension of the Google search engine. I’m expecting something akin to ‘circle to search’ on Samsung devices.

We’ll see.

And maybe Tim will get a Grammy too!😋

Have you seen the cool stuff the galaxy can do? Meanwhile iPhone users can drag stickers out of photos and fight with Siri. That’s it.

I thought Apple is making their own AI? So why partner with others?

Building your own AI and building an AI for all scenarios (for example, being able to work in different 180+ languages) are two very different things.

I truly love the illusion folks have in think their information is completely safe with Apple and not with other large companies.

Having worked for a few big tech companies, the only privacy is an illusion in privacy. People give more data away on a daily basis than they realize and it just feeds an algorithm.

I love how people can read a person’s speculation about what Apple is doing and somehow “divine” how well Apple is performing in the AI space. You don’t know unless you work there, and on those specific projects. Their research is compelling, and a couple of recent papers demonstrate models that arguably outperform ChatGPT 4

If Apple can pull off on-device AI where other people need cloud data centers, they’ll be at the forefront of a revolution

I believe Microsoft, if they don’t mess this up like they do most other consumer facing products, is in a position, to run Apple into the ground. And I were Microsoft, I would scoop up as much AI investments that made sense as possible, oh, and robotics.

I'm confused as to why Anthropic with Claude isn't a potential contender. Much smaller organization, much easier to be "bent" in the direction that is needed for Apple instead of trying to pursue their own agenda.

Imagine Apple partners with Google.

THAT uncle Google. THAT privacy unfriendly Google. Quite an interesting look that would create.
The memoji avatars on here will be absolutely seething lmao 🤣
