I remember the prosperity preacher (the fraud himself) Robert Tilton would say he has special prayer cloths that he personally prayed over, as long as you donated money to him. Im so happy he was busted on Diane Sawyer's DateLine show...

I’d be curious to know if the cloth is made by Norwex. Norwex is the world leader in microfiber cloths.

Personally, I'd own it. Not the nano coat version though. And it's good to know for people who may be on the cusp. Ever since the announcement I thought about building a Digital Imaging Tech's cart with an XDR since it does spec right up to and including some Sony and JVC broadcast reference monitors.

Those ref monitors STINK as computer displays, and computer displays stink as reference. But to have one that does both, and to not have to spend $1799 on solid display then $5000 on the monitor would be a bonus.

Sure, there are some who look at $7000 for the XDR as pennies, and there are some like me who have to think about the purchase before justifying it. I think the article is for the latter, the ones who now know that a special cloth is needed to clean the nano-coat, so avoid it and deal with the glare.

LOL. "Deal with the glare," to avoid having to once in a while take out a "special" cloth that Apple gives you for free and spend a few seconds to wipe the monitor. Said no one who would ever use such a monitor. You can't make this stuff up!

PS. Just think about it. Buy the non-matte version and "deal with the glare" so you only need to take out a "non-special" cloth to wipe down the monitor. LOL.

Why is everyone confused about this?

If I spent four figures worth of pounds (£) on a monitor you bet I’m getting the special cloth for it to clean it.

This screen is not for the average consumer, it’s for enterprise clients to use with there mega expensive Mac Pro setups in corporate offices.

This monitor isn’t meant for people like me.
Yes but this is MacRumors. We spend $500 on Apple Watch and thousands iPhones then complain about the price of Apple watch bands and Cases and look for $2.99 bands and cases on Amazon and EBay. Lol, been there done that, so I’m poking fun at myself, too.

So naturally, hearing that a special cleaning cloth is required for an extreme high end display for an extreme high end Apple computer is going to provoke those of us who haunt Slickdeals for discount codes on Apple accessories and who use our shirttails to clean everything, to crack a few good natured jokes.

Do they have privacy screen protectors?

Alright. I’m done.

I'm not following how that is at all relevant to my comment, but if you are buying an XDR display and putting a privacy protector on it you bought the wrong monitor for the job. This isn't a display to be used in public with PHI or other secret information, this is an editing monitor for color critical work and a privacy protector would destroy the quality of the monitor.

Have fun communicating this to cleaning services way below the paygrade of those using said monitors. It's a fun mental image though, seeing them carry a specific Apple Cloth and having to check whether it's a nano textured display. Maybe they'll just have to keep it simple with signs besides them: "Hands off! In case of smudges, I'll take care of it!" Haha...

Sigh... I just want a new Thunderbolt Display that I can pair to a new iMac... not this overpriced thing. Now that Tim's pipeline has been unblocked with this thing, hopefully he can release some more mainstream computers...

Exactly. I am about to buy a new 16" MBP which is about $4K and there is no way I will spend $6K to add this display. They can build a 27" iMac with a Retina screen for $5K including the computer, SSD, etc. I just want that screen in a Thunderbolt enclosure.

Cleaning services are instructed not to touch the equipment and that takes care of it. Most won’t touch anything on a desk, anyways, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

In principle I agree but over the years I’ve had whiteboards erased that said “do not erase” and other things happen.

It seems you've never had to work as a DIT. LOL. Depending on the job you could be wiping down your monitor a few times a day. Definitely before and after you unpack/deploy it, most likely each time you need to check your image or grade a quick take to make sure your team has it. Think about it, you can't find the cloth and need to wipe down your display and no one else needs an XDR so they don't have your special cloth. Can't use a shirt or a chamois.

Or,

Deal with the glare, which is already rather minimal by the way, so you can stop looking like a prude, wipe your monitor with a cloth everyone has on set, and get back to work.

Now, if you were thinking a DIT works in a cozy room all day, your mistake is easy to make.

What the hell is a reference monitor? Either way, this isn’t even 120hz so it is useless for gaming.

Not sure if serious... but if so, this monitor very clearly isn't for you.

The Caterpiller 797F mining truck only has seats for two people?? And it requires specialized maintenance? That makes it useless for people who want to take their families on camping trips.

A reference monitor is one that Is held to a much higher standard (color, uniformity, contrast, etc) so that it is used as the standard to judge an image or video for sign off by a client or an approving editor and will display well on lesser monitors, such as a 120Hz gaming monitor.

Such fragility for such a capable piece of tech. I can see that pros that can actually get the most out of this monitor would baby it, though, exactly as Apple requires.

Thing is, all this negative press could have been avoided if Apple had released a 27" Thunderbolt Display 5K alongside this thing, for (preferably a bit less than) the price of the Pro Stand.

Tim Cook really, really ISN'T a product guy.

What if I buy my monitor and just leave it in the box then I wouldn't have to get the cloth to clean it.

Many people here don't like to see people complaining about the price of the Mac Pro
There’s a few that likely don’t like to see it. Most probably see a group of people in serious emotional pain as they are no longer in the demographic that Apple’s making products for. Folks want to tell the people in pain to move on, because that’s what they themselves had to do when Apple discontinued iWeb, or when Apple discontinued wireless routers. It’s really the best and healthiest way forward.
had to be replaced with the battery, speakers, keyboard-screen, etc.
So, for one key, you get an entire refreshed top case + battery? seems like you came out on the better end of that deal!
Senses anti Apple sentiment. Rushes to defend.
I sometimes see it more like trying to educate someone that may really not know that alternatives are much more expensive. Of course, the OP is also very likely a troll, so it’s of no use, but if the person really didn’t know, and actually values what they’ve learned, great! :)
We think you’re going to love it.
You took the extra step, I giggled!
Have fun communicating this to cleaning services
i’ve never known a cleaning service to do anything with monitors. Maybe this is something they did 30-40 years ago when monitors were crt’s? I don’t know.
over the years I’ve had whiteboards erased that said “do not erase”
That was more than likely a coworker who needed to use the whiteboard. :) remember that guy that told you the cleaning services probably did it? It was him!
I really can’t see cleaning services even being bothered with a whiteboard when there’s so much trash to be dumped, bathrooms to be cleaned, etc.
all this negative press could have been avoided
LOL! Negative press can NEVER be avoided... :)

You know, I kinda want to make a joke about the iCloth Pro, and that expensive monitor with it’s expensive stand... but Apple released a reasonably priced Thunderbolt monitor, too, so I will keep my searing commentary to myself. /s

I don’t see the snark with this. Apple is telling you how to care for your $6,000 display. People wipe their screens off with Pledge furniture polish, so it’s a little tip to not do something silly.
