Why is everyone confused about this?

If I spent four figures worth of pounds (£) on a monitor you bet I’m getting the special cloth for it to clean it.

This screen is not for the average consumer, it’s for enterprise clients to use with there mega expensive Mac Pro setups in corporate offices.

This monitor isn’t meant for people like me.

Many people here don't like to see people complaining about the price of the Mac Pro and its accessories. But they complain because many want an upgradable tower mac that is priced so that normal consumers who want to use macOS can purchase them. Apple offers nothing like this. So I support the complaints.

Shouldn't there be a monitor for people like you and me though? Why does it have to be all+100 or nothing?

No, but your post shows how out of touch you are. This screen is designed for a specific type of professional, because no one else makes something like it. You want a 4k or 5k display with normal matte coating? Tons of companies make them, and they all work just fine with a Mac. Get one of those if you don't need this.

As an Apple user I don't want a monitor from "tons of companies". I'm not an award winning photographer or a Pixar/ILM animator; that doesn't mean I'm not a professional user, and for my UX-UI-graphic design needs the Cinema Display used to be neat. The fact that 4 years after it's been discontinued Apple's only options are either the extremely high end XDR or LG's fugly 5K duckling, is.. you know.. kinda tone-deaf on their part?

But way to attack the user's experience as the problem, champ, I'm sure Tim would be proud of you.

Can someone tell me why anyone who doesn’t own or is it planning to buy this specific display should care about this? This article seems more about getting clicks and snarky comments from people who are never going to own this display.

Exactly because of the part I emphasized in your post. In reality, everyone would love to have that display, it's awesome. We all know it's awesome. But most of us can't have it. So, people are being people, and that means they will be negative towards the things they can't have.

Normal consumers have excellent iMac and iMac Pro computers. Apple was never about upgradeability, it is offered on Mac Pro more in terms of customization (adding very specific components) then a cost-cutting measure. Upgrading by buying a new device is their entire business model.

I think a lot of people have no idea what “normal” matte coatings do to color accuracy. All they know is that they don’t need the colors to be perfect, so a matte coating is fine. I went glossy awhile ago and you couldn’t drag me back to looking at my work through frosted glass :)
Nope they don’t. Most people in here are average consumers pretending to be pros.

Apple you are a total joke

PS: post written from my recently fixed MacBook Pro 2018, which had a stuck character and had to be replaced with the battery, speakers, keyboard-screen, etc. Fabulous design, fabulous decisions that Apple is making during the last few years.

I hope there is a special storage unit available to keep the cleaning cloth clean ?

What will happen is the usual, customers order monitor with the nanotext coating, monitor arrives, unpacked, instructions thrown in the bin as per usual. Screen eventually needs a clean, customer uses normal cleaning cloth, nanotext coating is damage, customer is unhappy. Rings Apple support to complain, support ask customer did they read the instructional manual which contained section on how to clean monitor if it has nanotext coating, customer showing their ignorance at not wanting to be caught that they didn't actually read the instruction manual replies 'of course I did' and continues to complain that it is Apples fault for why the nanotext coating is damaged. Apple support says it will cost a lot of money to get it repaired. Customers then go on social media and make youtube video's berating Apple at the way they treated the customer, all because the customer failed to read the instruction manual because as many tech youtubers decry 'who reads instruction manuals these days'.

"has been the butt of multiple jokes as Apple is charging $4,999 for the display, and an extra $999 for its stand." yah hahaha, so much cheaper than the $20,000 comparable reference monitors, what a joke!
Senses anti Apple sentiment. Rushes to defend.

Not getting a cloth until at least version two when some of the kinks have been ironed out.
Don’t you mean wrinkles

The sad part is, you could've made the case that the XDR competes with other high end 4k broadcast reference monitors but not now. There's no way I'd recommend putting the XDR in a DIT cart or in any case for transport for that matter.

Well, not the nano-coat version anyway.

The people criticizing this are definitely not wealthy enough to even afford it.

If you knew what materials are used in its construction, you would want a special cloth.

Personally, I'd own it. Not the nano coat version though. And it's good to know for people who may be on the cusp. Ever since the announcement I thought about building a Digital Imaging Tech's cart with an XDR since it does spec right up to and including some Sony and JVC broadcast reference monitors.

Those ref monitors STINK as computer displays, and computer displays stink as reference. But to have one that does both, and to not have to spend $1799 on solid display then $5000 on the monitor would be a bonus.

Sure, there are some who look at $7000 for the XDR as pennies, and there are some like me who have to think about the purchase before justifying it. I think the article is for the latter, the ones who now know that a special cloth is needed to clean the nano-coat, so avoid it and deal with the glare.

WARNING - WARNING - WARNING - WARNING - WARNING - WARNING - WARNING - WARNING

Such dry procedure to clean with a cloth will ruin (SCRATCH) the display if it contains dust; and mostly if it contains a lot of dust. It is better to remove such dust first, with a air blower, anti-static magic duster or hoover.

Can the attempts at humor get anymore predictable or lame? (I'm waiting for someone to post about the "iCloth Pro," that's at least a little more original:)) Stay tuned on MR.

It all boils down to whether you are used to using high end things. People who can afford this beautiful monitor are chuckling at the haters who think it is a big deal to occasionally take out the cloth and wipe down the screen to keep it pristine. It's like having the nice high end car, you don't take any old sponge to wash it or any old towel to dry it. People who buy high end things appreciate that and want to take care of their purchase. The people struggling with the idea of using a special cloth to clean a beautiful high end monitor are most likely used to taking their cars through through car washes or cleaning their computer monitors with some spit and a paper towel. That's cool, but you may have difficulty relating to this.
