Apple has trimmed around 200 employees from its autonomous vehicle project

And you paid for these folks with your latest iPhone/iPad purchase.

The changes make sense. A company has to keep reinventing itself or it will die. I would love to see Apple get far more involved in all the underlying technologies that run the internet and even create an alternative to Google in search. It is such a crime to have a monopoly dictate how people search the internet and the way it does it is solely for its own concerns and not necessarily what’s best for the public. Apple desperately needs to create an alternative while it has the money to take part in this sector instead of being an observer. Medical technologies will be huge, and Apple is also in that rare position to have the money and infrastructure to make it happen. And of course media consumption. It all feeds and works together.

And?

As with other companies, Apple engages in a ton of R&D. Some things may see the light of day. Many don't. Or may come to fruition later in time, in a different use or form. That's the way R&D works. Of course it is paid for by product and services revenue.

The same as other companies.

How about focusing on hardware? The entire Mac line is a joke at this point.
"Focusing" wurd not be enough. If you have lost view, there is nothing to focus at...

I actually simply refuse replacing my MacBook Pro from 2015, if I have a look at all the problems the actual MacBooks reveal. Usually I am quite fond of new stuff, but it has to be working for quite a while. Which includes keyboards, display cables and so on...

Ok, making changes is always a way to keep the company fresh, but let's be honest. Which Apple services are that good you would use them on non-Apple devices? Music? iCloud? iTunes? You use them because those services are very well integrated into Apple hardware. I started using Music just because the AW, but with the Spotify app released few weeks ago, I'm thinking about canceling the subscription. iCloud is seemless, but only for average use, not some company / business use. iTunes is quite expensive compared to Netflix.

What I'm trying to say is that Apple will have to really change their direction and open those services for other companies. I like their current business model = deliver hardware + software + services in one box, but they became greedy and started to ruin their hardware with the prices and gimmicks.

I don't think there would be this problem if they kept the prices on the same levels and delivered reliable hardware.

Apple has never demonstrated much competency in delivering services, so if Apple does not survive, it will because they shifted their focus to something they suck at.

Chancing focus does not main abandoning the existing stuff. It become more future investments are put into something else.
Hardware can keep going on existing funding and skills. It is different than trying to expand.
Apple knows the hardware market is saturated. Like little over 10 years ago apple shifted its focus to the smart phone. They did not play in that market back then at all. They complete change it and now that market is saturated.
All companies must adapt and change to survive.
For example if Apple stayed focus only on desktop computer years ago they would of died before the laptop. They focused on the laptop or did not move on to smart phones they would of died a long time ago.

Another example is look at kodak. They used to be kings of the phone world. Where are they now? They failed to adapt and changed. They only focused on what they were good at it instead of changing with the times.

I’m curious to see if Apple intends to compete with Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services by pushing server-side Swift hosted on “iCloud for Business”, together with dedicated server-side (i.e. Linux and macOS) SDKs for developers.

Apple's services are not that good and those that work well depend on tight knit into their great hardware. What would happen if Google Maps or Google Photos got prime access to iOS?
They can keep doing that because they have smallish market shares and therefore will never be found of abusing dominant positions.

Of course iPhone may have peaked but it won't stop delivering, it will just grow slower or not grow at all.

They've been prepping for a move to services for while now: killing xserve and OS Server, letting ARD languish, etc. Heck, even FileMaker is being pushed to a "cloud" ecosystem. Like Microsoft et al, they want to control all the data, then charge us for access. It's going to be a hard fight keeping what's ours. I wonder when Big Data will start buying up storage device companies and pricing those out of reach. Not to be conspiratorial or anything.

And I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over, la...

there is no Apple "services" without the iPhone

Of course they are...ask Samsung TV & Apple Music on Android.....;)

I have to laugh at all the hot takes after it was announced Angela Ahrendts was leaving. So many techies were like she was fired and this new person is going to come in and focus less on sales and more on servicing hardware products. Yeah right.

This obsession now with services is worrying. Mostly because it seems it’s not coming from a place of creating great products and letting the financials flow from that. It seems to be coming from the financials and working backwards; i.e. what can we do to get more money from our existing customers...oh I know let’s create some TV shows and charge. $15/mo for them. What’s insanely great about that?

I don’t trust Apple with content subscription as they cut and censor movies and songs. Logan is an example that is censored and not flagged as censored in iTunes. What would Die Hard be without Bruce Willis Yippie-Ki-Yay *silence*.

Basic fact is everyone else figured out a while ago SAS is where it is at. Apple is still really far behind the 8ball on it though as they need to decouple the fact that you have to be on an Apple hardware product to get apple services.

Take for example Google Music. You do not need to be on a google device to use it. It works great on iPhone, any computer and multiple speakers. They just have to be willing to tie into Google API for home, they need to create an Apple for Android.
This follow by for iTunes movies they really need to be able to play on something like a roku, and on Android phones instead of being limited to Apple owned devices.

Reason being is Apple is not the only game in town and they are late to the table. In this they have to overcome the current players and understand that not only does your product have to be better but have to be better enough to be worth the cost to switch.
At some point this whole subsciption economy/SaaS bubble will pop (IMO) so I do hope Apple doesn’t go all-in.

Oh, now they care about Siri? Whether or not I'd use the HomePod much, I resisted buying as Siri has bottom-of-the-pile capabilities and can't natively play anything other than Apple Music. Otherwise, it's a tempting piece of hardware.

They sound better than everything, play Apple Music when one of my cats step on them, and I can tell Siri to set a HomeKit scene without having my phone in my hand. What more could you need?

News to me. Have any proof?

What they don't realize is the service industry doesn't work if they force people to buy their hardware. It needs to be cross-platform to work like Amazon, Google, Netflix, Spotify, etc. so pretty much all non-Apple services.
Which would ironically go against one of Apple’s professed main advantages of tightly integrated hardware and software.

They could, but focusing on Mac hardware isn't going to help them increase revenue. The bulk of their customers come to Apple for mobile products and wearables. They need to prioritize these customers, and these customers are investing more in services.

Try as I might, I can’t see the forthcoming apple video service as anything other than apple admitting that they’re starting to run out of ideas.

I guess it also explains why they launched two jumbo phones this year - you’re meant to watch Apple TV on them.

Nothing on the iTunes listing indicates anything other than the full-bore R rating.
That is my point. :) Anyway, as others in the linked thread indicated it is a behaviour that brings a smile, head shake and the term weird.
