How many of those comparing US prices to those around the world are factoring in the US sales tax to the US price? Not many by the looks of it

Or factoring in the extra years warranty that you get in Europe/Australia which adds to the price.. not many by the looks of it

Is that after you've factored in transatlantic shipping, 20% VAT, added cost of employee overheads for support (better than usual UK "customer support") etc

...or are you just comparing the headline figures and fancy having a moan?

I'm not saying these factors cover all the difference, they never have, but it does close the gap considerably. If you go to Amurka and buy one, you'll have a better chance of avoiding custom/import duty that with the previous MacPro (hand luggage?) so give it a go.

It's not really the biggest thing in the world to ship, and I've never had a problem with the UK support. Actually been really impressed by it, so if it's better in America, then they must be sexually pleasing their customers or something! I've bought tonnes of stuff, including expensive guitars from America and have never paid the VAT. So that's not a problem either.

So, the factors cover none of the difference in my case. Therefore, not a moan. Reality.

You can buy extended warranty for any electrical items you have for much cheaper than Apple's.

I thought professional equipment is tax-deducible?

It depends on how he/she is set up. Best case: The price you pay for 'professional equipment' is a price you can deduct from your business income before calculating taxes. It's not like you buy a $4000 computer, and the government says "okay, you owe us $4000 less". (That would be a tax credit, not a tax deduction.)

Well, that is clear. What I mean, in the end you do pay less. Not to mention that VAT is returnable in a number of european countries if I am not mistaken.

Depending on where you are, the VAT return might be a big deal, but in the end, if you can't afford the sticker price up front - no amount of return after-the-fact will help!

Not on homepage

I think it's interesting that the MacPro isn't even advertised on the Mac homepage. Pre iPhone/iPad, who would've imagined that a new high end pro machine from Apple would be relegated to the inner pages?

Guessing with the holiday season, the push is very much on gifty devices such as phones / tablets and we'll see it make it to the homepage in the new year?

MP is good looking!
It's too expensive for a can that does not permit internal storage upgrade.:(
Professionals used to the "old" form factor are going to hate the cables and mess of external HDDs.
I believe Apple has gone the wrong direction with this MP, really hope they don't sell many.

In the Box...

All good things come in threes, but how exactly does the third item qualify as 'in the box'?

Also in the box...
Ferrari F40 sold separately
Rolex Oyster Perpetual sold separately

I guess a list of two items would be embarrassingly short.

Careful when buying - no SSD swap if it fails by user!!

Guys, I just chatted with Apple, and I found out that you cannot change the SSD if it fails... hmmm....

And SSDs have limited write amount, when you reach it, it will wear out - recently I made a research and for example one review talked about a higher-end SSD which had 700TB write amount. And that's it. Sounds a lot, but when you autosave your 3-4 GB files every 15 min.... it will wear out quickly.

I attach the screen grab of the chat. I was shocked, to be honest. I was waiting to buy this machine, and now I am thinking to get a 12 core older model, as this is going to be too expensive over the years.

So to make it short, after your 3 year protection plan is over, Apple may replace it for service charge. You cannot replace it yourself for sure, guy did confirm. And there is no upgrade for a larger one either.

I had another chat session and they confirmed the same with graphics card: no upgrade and no "swip-swap" if you happen to need a better one. I knew I cannot swap it myself, but Apple will not upgrade it either - I got very specific answer about it.

Why not add:
Ferrari F40 sold separately
Rolex Oyster Perpetual sold separately

I guess a list of two items would be embarrassingly short.

Hey at least it comes with a Power Lead :)

I am a little puzzled why Apple cannot even give a keyboard away with it  as it's much like buying a high spec vehicle and not getting the wheels.

I think it will complicate the packaging if they were to include a keyboard in there. Apple is probably just keeping it simple.

Why would you wish they don't sell many? why would you wish something bad on any company??????

Apple always builds in a buffer of around 10%. There's no point even whining about it anymore, especially if you're a consumer where you get far better returns policies. It's really not that much extra complied the the fleecing you get from Adobe and Autodesk.

Still though...

US Price: 2999
Upgrade to 32 GB 500
Upgrade to 1 TB 800
Upgrade to D500 $400
Total for this config: 4699

Canadian Price: 3099 CDN
Upgrade to 32 GB 500 CDN
Upgrade to 1 TB 800 CDN
Upgrade to D500 $400 CDN
Total for this config: 4799 CDN. US dollar cost at current exchange rate: 4475.84

So, $175 cheaper in Canada with exchange rate.

I don't know if this is part of it or not, but when they release all those market share figures for manufacturers they always say Apple has XX share of the US desktop and laptop market, but doesn't even register on the worldwide. Perhaps the prices outside Canada and the US reflect increased costs per unit from having a tiny market share?

Awesome machine. Would LOVE to have one, loaded up and with the 4K display.

Santa? Are you there?

Santa doesn't work in January!

It hasn't been confirmed yet. But after looking at the design... it might be a possibility.

The Mac Pro is made up of 3 smaller daughter cards that plug into the mainboard on the bottom.

The 1st card has the processor and RAM... the 2nd card is a video card and the PCIe drive... and the 3rd is another video card.

Perhaps Apple could sell replacements of one or more of the cards. Or they could swap them out at the Apple Store.

But knowing Apple... they would rather sell you another $3000 computer in a few years! (yeah that's more likely)

I, for one, do NOT want to get into thermal paste and mating the GPU to the cooling solution. If you screw it up, the GPU fries and that's that. I doubt very seriously that this will be an Apple-warrantied user upgrade. :apple:

Why would you wish they don't sell many? why would you wish something bad on any company??????

Because they are producing a "lemon".
Car vendors know what i mean.

Why do you defend Apple at all costs?
You believe that if Steve Jobs was still alive, they would have produced such a thing? I don't.

!! Games

Just a question : what are you guys going to use it for ?

I'm an architect and switched from Mac Pro to (maxed out) Retina Macbook Pro last year, and it's "good enough" (but could be better of course). I especially wonder what the extra graphics capacity could be used for ? Is there any software that actually can use this kind of graphics capabilities (other than custom written software for research for example) ?

Although it's not the primary purpose of the Mac Pro, I'll still be interested to see gaming specs. I'll be interested to see how Boot Camp works on this architecture, and what drivers are available under Windows. :apple:

How'd you manage that? I configured one with everything I could, including two monitors, apple care and every possible keyboard and cable, and could only get it to 20,196.97.

My actual ordered config is:

1TB PCIe-based flash storage
Dual AMD FirePro D500 GPUs with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM each
Accessory Kit
User's Guide (English)
3.5GHz 6-core with 12MB of L3 cache
12GB (3x4GB) of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC

Ordered 32 GB RAM from Crucial. Slightly cheaper and I can keep the 12 GB in case anything goes wrong with the Crucial.

Does the December ship date for stock configurations only apply to the US? I ordered the 6-core stock option in the UK within a few minutes of the store coming back online and I've just got "ships January"
