Almost $3,300 cheaper for the maxed out Mac Pro in America compared to the UK?!?! WHY GOD, WHY?!?!?!

It might have something to do with your exorbitant VAT. That gets hidden in the pricing structure of all the Eurozone countries and ranges from a low in Switzerland of 8% to a high in Hungary of 27%. In the UK, it's 20%....complain to your government........

In the U.S., states and localities can and mostly do add sales taxes. For this type of purchase, it pays to buy in a state like Oregon which has no sales tax, but other taxes are pretty high.

As an aside, it's nice to see a new computer system made in Austin, TX instead of China for a change. Woohoo.....

Really surprised it doesn't come with the keyboard, mouse, or Ferrari.

I'm sure the SSD is replaceable, just not easily or "user" replaceable.

I can't wait to see the iFixit Teardowns.

I"ll probably never own one.

I'm in!

Stay at home video editor here,

I'm in for the 6 Core, bone stock. I'll do the RAM and SSD myself, for the record the SSD is user serviceable!!!

Haha I sort of knew it when they said "later next year" last year, they had to mean really really late. :D

People...please go look at OWC ram prices that came out yesterday. It is way cheaper than using Apple especially if you are going for 64GB. OWC for 64GB is $859 and they will give you $75 for 12GB or $100 for your 16GB that came in the stock config. That means the upgrade will only be $795 or $820 at most. 32GB is $479 and that will be $404 or $379 after the trade-in.

I went to OWC today, and although they have a dedicated page for the new Mac Pro memory, stating that you can order 128 GB of RAM, I do not see 4x32 GB = 128 GB available on the OWC page. Do you see a link for this? I am in the market for it. Thanks

How many of those comparing US prices to those around the world are factoring in the US sales tax to the US price? Not many by the looks of it

Of course not, because despite the internet opening up an almost bottomless well of knowledge most people don't learn anything.

Such as the UK prices including the massive chunk of VAT and US prices not including the random amounts of sales tax you will be charged on top of the Apple retail price, or the various import, licensing and regulations that Apple have to include for each country they sell to. Or even just basic local product rate competition.

We'll just ignore the fact that exchange rates at consumer level (even though they keep being brought up) mean nothing to the end user unless they are actually buying currency or internationally sourced products, because based on continuous fluctuations it is pretty idiotic to expect a price to be set based on the strength of a currency just at the moment someone looks it up. Hey, but if people outside the US wait for the dollar to tank some more then Apple can increase the price and nobody would have any room to complain!

So, if people have advice about WHERE to buy the 4x32 GB sticks of RAM for this machine, I am willing to listen. I would like advice, please.

I am also interested in buying 3 of the Sharp 4K monitors, but I only see how to add 1 to my order. Is there a way to get 3 of them through Apple's pricing scheme? I am not using a "business" representative at Apple, because I am a university professor, so I get education pricing anyway.

(This is not a joke. I have 3 of the 30-inch monitors on my 2007 Mac Pro. Advice is actually welcome here.)

Please elaborate...

P.S.: The tariff for importing computers to Germany is 19%, which equals exactly the sales tax in Germany. As I already explained I had subtracted the tax already from the price and it would be still 1,400€ (15%) more expensive than in the US. This has NOTHING to do with the EU. This money goes directly into Apple's pocket.

See all the other threads about how Apple has to give you longer warranties in the EU.

I'm sure the SSD is replaceable, just not easily or "user" replaceable.

See my earlier post. I copy-pasted the entire chat with Apple this morning regarding this question. I post it here, too.

So according to chat, SSD is not user replaceable and not upgradable if you run out of space... according to this chat.

And if it fails after the warranty, you have to pay for the service to be swapped and fixed. That is very sad decision from Apple. Cost are adding up quickly.. Imagine, you computer may be down easily for a week if SSD fails (you need to ask for appointment, get a date, get there (there is no Apple where I live) they may not be able to fix it straight away, so you may have to wait a few days, go again......all this is money and time)

If I have a hard drive failure now, I just walk into Pc world, get a new drive, go home, swap drive, use time machine to get everything back. Less than 4-5 hours is lost - not to mention that we don't know the cost of repair..

No happy. I was going to buy, and now I am not sure. I may go for last years 12 core with new graphics card. Very confusing decisions from Apple.

They also confirmed me that no graphics card upgrade, not even by Apple !!!
So I need to know my needs 4-5 years ahead.. and buy accordingly now.
I am ok with D500 now, but who knows my workflow in a few years time.

Got my order in, entry level machine, delivered for store pick up Jan 6. I now can rest. I already have my 5 bay Drobo, solar keyboard, Samsung 40" TV for monitor, and speakers. All I need to get is a new mouse and organize my data to be transfered off my old Mac Pro (about 8 years old).

Also a side note: Apple tends to say their machine parts are not user replaceable but they almost always are with a lot of work and it will void the warrenty but you would only do it if the warrenty is over anyway. Give the market some time to get the parts out there.

$3,000 on a computer and yet complain it doesn't come with a mouse and keyboard? I would guess if you have the money to spend on a new Mac Pro spending the money on a new keyboard and mouse will be nothing. Can't wait to order one to replace my home theatre machine!

Anyone gone into a US store yet?

I'm wondering if anyone has gone into a US store yet? Curious to see if they have the units in stock there.

I was told completely the opposite - by Apple...- that it is not user serviceable
where did you get the info from??
Very crucial for me to know if yes, it is user serviceable or not.
Did you get it from Apple or some forums?

Disappointed

I clicked through the configuration and quickly realized what I already should have expected.

The problem is not the price itself, but the "Price to Future-Proof" ratio.
The world will move on, meaning that graphic cards evolve and SSD will get cheaper.

The low-end is underpowered, considering the price and the high-end is (of-course) way too expensive.

The problem is that I have a MacPro with 16GB RAM and 12TB storage.
The CPU was never the problem. The problem for all Apps is memory-bandwidth and graphics capabilities.

Not the pure numbers, which are kind of meaningless. But the technology moves on to OpenCL, more OpenGL extensions and the software will support it.

This is the main thing. Apple will keep the prices stable and here it comes:

What now looks like a nicely equipped machine will look obsolete in 12 month without any ability to upgrade for a reasonable cost.

The D700 is a must if you buy one now, 1TB SSD storage can be bought today as PICIe cards even.

This is my main rant here. It looks great, but it will be a problem in 12 month.
With a MacBookPro you know that there will be a new one, but the MacPro will have a really slow update cycle. And one you cannot afford anyways.

I'm fairly disappointed. A configuration that will not make you cry in 12 month cost more than 700 Euro.

You need the D700, you need the 1TB SSD and you probably need RAM that you might get somewhere else.

But what about storage? A NAS with Gbit is nice but cannot replace a directly connected storage entity. Thunderbolt RAID's add to an already overpriced investment and I do not like the idea to rely on external cabling for a complete RAID.

Imagine your cable unplugs, or a driver problem kills your FS.
No, that's not an option. A NAS on the other hand is at least a separately working entity that will not die immediately if a communication problem occurs.

Anyways, this is getting too long.

I would have considered a 4000 Euro investment. But not with 256GB SSD and the low-end graphics.

Disappointing. And NOT future proof.

...its a little weird that they force monitor one to be only an Apple Cinema Display and option two to be only the 4k Sharp display. There's no option for both being the Apple Cinema Display or both being the 4k Sharp Display?!?

Apple isn't "forcing" you to do anything. Click 'Mac accessories' at the top of the page add extra displays to your basket before you check out if you want more display options, more keyboard choices, external drives, external speakers etc.

I seem to recall reading somewhere (can't remember where) that the SSD uses proprietary connections. So while it is technically replaceable, the challenge would be locating a supplier who sells that particular configuration of SSD. If it works only for the Mac Pro, it may not be profitable to keep those in stock.

Where will you be buying a replacement SSD?

This is the tax all people outside the US have to pay for not living in God's own country... We just have to accept that we are not the chosen ones.

Interesting enough that we indirectly subsidize the prices in the US by the high prices in our countries.

But I never heard a "thank you" by any US citizen for our contribution to their purchasing power. ;)

Or perhaps you are paying for more stringent consumer protections that you get in the EU as opposed to the US ....
