No question Ives is a genuis, but it does seen to me that some of the products lately have followed form over function.

Examples; thin & light phone but with poor battery life, imac...super thin if looking from the side, but no optical drive, non expandable ram, ect.

They've been form over function for eons but in my opinion they've just crossed the line.

- iPhone 5: Gorgeous but fragile
- iMac: Pointlessly thin at the edges as it's still just as fat in the middle
- iPhone5 / iPad Mini: That diamond cut bezel or whatever it is, bit gawdy in my opinion

Preparing to get shot down for this but while I think Ive and Jobs were an amazing team I dont think Ive is quite the same without him.

iOS is going stale, they should have buried the hatchet with Google over maps and used the time/money to revamp other things that needed revamping.

..and at the risk of sounding like a broken record - release the sodding App Store for ATV already will you. You'll sell a ton of ATVs _and_ portable iOS devices assuming you're going to enable their use as controllers.

Apple's and MS' organizational structure is very similar now. They both have 3 divisions in the company

Apple - Softwarre (iOS / OSX), Services, Design

Microsoft - Platforms (Windows, services), Business, Entertainment / Devices

Pretty different to me.
Microsoft's divisions are based on products.. ie. Platforms: Windows. The platforms team deal with all things Windows...Entertainment and devices: xbox, surface. The entertainment team deals with all things Surface... etc etc

With Apple, the divisions are within the products themselves..
ie: iPhone ---> Software + Services + Design

As long as it's about aesthetics, sure, but his brilliance in industrial design isn't a merit when it comes to intuitive GUI design. It's like assuming that Beckham is the ultimate PS/3 FIFA 2013 player. Same sport, different skill sets.

GUI and HI are very different. Most Industrial Designers (and certainly the really, really, insanely great ones) have a pretty damn good grasp of what good UI should be. Now as far as Human Interface/Interaction and Information Architecture goes, that is a separate skill set, and Jonny probably won't have quite as much involvement in that department.

Just hope all these changes will not kill the Mac on the long run. Especially the professional line.
While I love the iStuff, we still need a full fledge mac to make the wonderful stuff we see around us.
Looking forward next year for that MacPro and ACDs. ;)

i have mixed feelings about it.

to me its obvious : tim cook wants to run things more simply and straight forward.

Jobs was a perfectionist, and he ran things more specifically, and organised.

perhaps tim cook will get the best out of himself by running things a way that suits him.

though i will say : when apple has mess ups like Maps, im sure it will be harder to pinpoint who at large, is responsible.

he cant just fire people like ive, cue, and craig because of something else.

we'll just have to see, i hope for the best.

Absolutely. Microsoft's divisions are separated by profit centers and thus they have to do well for themselves. Apple's software and design teams do not have the same pressure nor the conflict of interest. I can see a bit of trouble with services we'll see how that goes from here on.

I say we get rid of this bunch of clowns altogether and get a whole new team. I haven't seen real innovation and leadership out of Apple since Sculley was CEO.

Bring back Jean-Louis Gassé!!!

If you all think Apple's move to Intel-based Macs was a move in the right direction, you have to be crazy. What in the world was Apple thinking? The Mac is now essentially a PC running Apple's Unix-based operating system...the core which was developed at NeXT. Has Apple ignored IBM and POWER?

I don't think that's gonna happen, but it could use a makeover aesthetically.

Once upon a time, OS X was designed to reflect the hardware design. The pinstripes, the blobby Aqua buttons, it all came out of the bondi blue hardware -- the PowerMac G3 and the original iMac.

Then came the white Macs followed by the aluminum Macs but the G3-inspired UI stayed the same... it wasn't until Lion that they got rid of those ugly pill buttons and scroll bars, and there's still some Aqua residue left, like the icon style, the spinning beach ball etc. Much of the look and feel of iOS is a product of the Aqua era. It's getting pretty stale and Apple would hate to be looked upon as unfashionable in any way...

Ugly? UGLY? How dare you

Bondi is beautiful

If this ultimately means they stop treating iOS users like children and let us delete useless apps like Newstand and Compass and put more than 12 items in a folder, I'll be happy.

..he's becoming a bit smug unfortunately - I think the money/power/title is going to his head although to his credit at least he's not calling himself 'Sir' in the Apple promo materials :)

I think he'd be the best guy to be a spokesperson for Apple and do the keynote presentations.... but I think he's also the guy least likely to actually want to do that. I think he prefers staying in the design shop, and occasionally going into a big white room to talk to a camera.

All I want out of this shakeup is for people to stop saying skeuomorphism.

That, and for Ive to get a new picture taken where he's not doing the arms-crossed/frowny-artsy-aloof thing.

Well compared to poor old Phil who I think struggled, although possibly because he couldn't believe himself how ridiculous the iMac presentation was, I would have to agree :)

Hope there is noticeable change to ios. Then I might go back. Love apple, ios not so much anymore. It was the the greatest only 2 years ago.

Yup, one more person who sees technology as fashion.
I'm so bored... put sparkly lights on it to entertain me.
Pathetic.

Maybe he can start using the head tilt, look how brilliant my design is pose

No, 'smug' is judging people you have never met, do not know, and to whom you don't hold a candle.

I partially agree but widgets (or whatever Apple want to call them) on the home screen ARE useful, and I'd like them (properly, not a couple that Apple choose) in iOS please.
