M2 Pro/Max in that tiny clamshell?? come on...physics tells us what is all about
Not going to happen in the 12" laptop. If its coming in early 2024 it can get the M3 3nm
Don’t knock it. If I can have it doing some heavy workload in clamshell mode and, while I’m waiting, fry a couple of eggs on the bottom, that is true multi-tasking

How many different models do we have now? Is it eight?
Are they going to start calling them Apple Performa with numbers?
Where’s SJ when you need him to axe some models?

12-inch is way too small for professional usage when you need to spend long hours in front of it.

Maybe too small for you, but consider other kinds of professionals who might want such a machine. Photographers and mobile content producers come to mind.

A 12" Pro does make a lot of sense to me. It might partially explain why the old 13" MBP is still occupying a slot in the lineup. Those 13" MBPs are favored by many professional photographers as mobile workstations that pack away easily in a gear bag.

Thank you! That’s a better way to put it. Plan B.

On top of that Apple put that Plan B chip on a MacBook Pro 13”? It carried a Touch ID and it’s last years model, 🤦🏻‍♀️
I guess that is the Art of Tim Cook to be prepared for any interruption in the supply chain, by supporting every scenario with possible product versions.

The MacBook Pro 13 however looks to me like the actual "Plan A" - a high synergy, low-production cost product to be sold to corporate customers at a discount.

A 12" laptop is MIGHTY tempting; I've already got a powerhouse of a computer at home, there really isn't a huge need for a powerhouse laptop. Rather, an ultra lightweight and ultra portable laptop that's not even noticeable while travelling/commuting would probably be much more beneficial.

12" on a pro device.... ehhh. Productivity becomes limited with that screen size. I loved my 11" Air back in the day but for extended work it was brutal. Could be Apple's way of pushing connection to their pro display and increasing sales there because people that buy that will absolutely crave it. Many of us can get by with a 16" Pro and not needing another display

What if they’re getting into rugged watches and rugged notebooks (like a Toughbook)? Maybe this rugged 12” will also have 5G and emergency satellite connectivity? What if the mixed reality headset can expand the screen size of a Mac if you watch said Mac thru the headset?

I agree.

I loved my 2015 because it had everything I needed for high mobility. I bought MBA M1 because my 12’ couldn’t manage zoom and screen sharing. But I didn't like the size and weight increase. I think my sweet spot would be a 12’, M1 or M2 mini.
BTW, I’m also an iPhone 12 mini user.

I could see this happening with an 'M3' i.e. using the forthcoming 3 nanometer process so the chip runs cooler.

But not with the pro chip as almost every one posting on here has said! ♨️🥵

An entry level notebook - i.e. a 'MacBook' - which replaces the current $999 M1 Air (thus allowing the regular Air to stay at its more expensive price point) with a 12.6 inch screen which is meant to be used with Stage Manager?

Yeah, I could see Apple doing that.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on Thursday reported that Apple is considering launching an all-new 12-inch notebook at the end of 2023 or in early 2024. Gurman said it is unclear if the 12-inch model would be a low-end MacBook or a higher-end MacBook Pro.

Twitter user "Majin Bu" has since claimed that the model will be a new 12-inch MacBook Pro that may be equipped with Apple's next-generation M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. In the MacBook Pro, Gurman said the M2 Max will feature a 12-core CPU and up to a 38-core GPU, while the M1 Max maxes out with a 10-core CPU and a 32-core GPU.

Apple has released both lower-end and higher-end 12-inch notebooks in the past. At the low end, Apple introduced an ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook that weighed just two pounds in 2015, but the notebook was discontinued in 2019. And at the higher end, Apple offered a 12-inch PowerBook G4 in the mid-2000s, prior to the original MacBook Pro.

In any case, Apple silicon chips deliver impressive performance per watt, paving the way for Apple to introduce ultra-portable, high-performance MacBooks without the thermal constraints of Intel processors that the company used over the last decade and a half.

Majin Bu has a hit-or-miss track record with Apple rumors, but he has gained some credibility recently after tweeting that Apple was planning a new 14.1-inch iPad Pro. The rumor has since been backed by very reliable display industry consultant Ross Young, who tweeted that his supply chain sources have confirmed that Apple is indeed planning a new 14.1-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display that could launch in 2023.

I have a 2017 12-inch which I love. At 2.0 lbs, it’s light and compact and a joy to travel with. The screen is perfect for focusing on one task. At the office, I plug it into big monitor. The natural buyer for this is someone who values portability over power. Upgrades that I would appreciate are a 1080 camera and true Thunderbolt. No need for a high-end processor.

I still think it is the best laptop I have ever owned. It was a real powerhouse and wasn't limited by the GPU having to drive a Retina display. I very much agree that it was a beast to work on without an external display.
