I agree.

I loved my 2015 because it had everything I needed for high mobility. I bought MBA M1 because my 12’ couldn’t manage zoom and screen sharing. But I didn't like the size and weight increase. I think my sweet spot would be a 12’, M1 or M2 mini.
BTW, I’m also an iPhone 12 mini user.
It's more likely the case that the 12" will be put under the MacBook moniker.

As a super happy 16 inch Pro Max user, I can totally see a use for it. I dread my next intercontinental trip with the weight of the 16 inch + its charger. I could do with a 12 inch with a M2 Pro for the 4 to 5 days I'll be on the road. I am still not convinced about the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. I would however never consider such a small size laptop for longer usage, even if you plug it in a big screen as you're losing all the processing power due to throttling.

why not look at the 13" MBP for intercontinental travel? Has the screen, won't throttle and is lighter.

I disagree. There is a subset of users who want power and ultimate portability and who think of themselves as “Pro.”

And Apple will want to put some daylight (i.e. product segmentation) in between the current 13” and 14” MBP.
If nothing else, release a 12" Pro and rid of the 13" Pro that truly seems like stopgap product at the moment.

If it does come out full stop in any guise; just take my money I still have my 2017 model and use it for travel today and on holidays.

I would love a 14 inch MB Air - that would be my sweet spot. The 14' MBP is a bit heavier and a 12' MBA would be too small (13' might be nice but again a bit larger would be the sweet spot). over the years I had 13' MBA and 13' MBP, now awaiting my 14' MBP but will curse at its weight probably. Ordered before the new MBA came out.

I have a fairly boring yet super niche YT channel about Amiga stuff. At first I did everything on my phone. Eventually I grabbed an M1 MBA and began learning FCPx. Was very fast and nice. Then I stepped up to full fat 4K HDR. It was a year later. I traded in for a base model 16” MBP. Only upgrade was to 1TB. This machine has been awesome. Of course my longer videos take 50min to export at 10b hvec. Which makes me start to eye these new M2s with a fiendish addiction. Of course this time I’ll wait for the Max Ultra level. ;)

Powerbook M2 12“ - So finally a successor of my beloved Powerbook G4 12“
I‘m pretty happy with my M1 MB Air but an 12 inch MB Pro i would definitly consider…

That doesn't make any sense does it? The new Pro machines are Pro because they are designed for maximum performance without compromise - so are larger to accommodate better cooling systems and larger batteries.

A 12" MacBook based on them would probably look like the old 12" PowerBook G4s!

I will absolutely buy a new M2-based 12" ultrabook, but I can't see how they make that a Pro-branded laptop. Other than cost of course!
They might make a “Pro” version and an “Air” or “Air SE” version (with wedge). That would make sense.

And how are they going to price this thing?

M2 Pro below the M2?
12” above the 13”?
The current 13" M2 MacBook Pro is a product of the pandemic. Getting rid of straggling parts in the supply chain and ultimately having some product that can be sold at reduced cost 6 months to a year from now in developing markets.

Maybe one last shout-out to the hundreds of fans who actually like the Touch Bar.

1) Pro or Max chip
2) small, thin and lightweight
3) decent battery life

Two out of the three? No problem.
A lack of 2) or 3) will make a 12-inch notebook undesirable though.

We can but dream. I loved the original MacBook 12, it was only the weak Intel cpu that let it down, otherwise it was a fantastic device.

Grrr. Just as i told my wife a perfect computer has been finally released and we can upgrade here 12" MacBook, leave it to these rumors. Now if I get her the new Air, once(should) this drop — she'll complain how big and heavy her MacBook Air is...

On second thought, unless I tell her — she'll never know that a new smaller, lighter MacBook has been released. Ok, we should be ok.

12" pro laptop sounds amazing. Travel when needed, and docked to a monitor when at home. I would eat this up so fast.

A lot of people don't understand that ultra-portability is more of a pro feature rather than a budget concession. I'd pay as much as I could to get the best performing ultra-portable MacBook possible. If that meant it only had a base M2, I still consider that a win. Obviously, even in the MacBook Pro lineup, Apple has already conceded that size will limit performance as the 14" MacBook Pro doesn't have the same top-end performance as the 16". I could imagine the 12" still wearing the Pro badge and using a base M2 or even a reduced-core M2 Pro. Either way, my wallet will jump out of my pocket the day it is announced. Even if they called it the "MacBook Mini" and it only had a 3 year-old M1.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on Thursday reported that Apple is considering launching an all-new 12-inch notebook at the end of 2023 or in early 2024. Gurman said it is unclear if the 12-inch model would be a low-end MacBook or a higher-end MacBook Pro.

2016-12-inch-macbook-feature.jpg

Twitter user "Majin Bu" has since claimed that the model will be a new 12-inch MacBook Pro that may be equipped with Apple's next-generation M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. In the MacBook Pro, Gurman said the M2 Max will feature a 12-core CPU and up to a 38-core GPU, while the M1 Max maxes out with a 10-core CPU and a 32-core GPU.

Apple has released both lower-end and higher-end 12-inch notebooks in the past. At the low end, Apple introduced an ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook that weighed just two pounds in 2015, but the notebook was discontinued in 2019. And at the higher end, Apple offered a 12-inch PowerBook G4 in the mid-2000s, prior to the original MacBook Pro.

In any case, Apple silicon chips deliver impressive performance per watt, paving the way for Apple to introduce ultra-portable, high-performance MacBooks without the thermal constraints of Intel processors that the company used over the last decade and a half.

Majin Bu has a hit-or-miss track record with Apple rumors, but he has gained some credibility recently after tweeting that Apple was planning a new 14.1-inch iPad Pro. The rumor has since been backed by very reliable display industry consultant Ross Young, who tweeted that his supply chain sources have confirmed that Apple is indeed planning a new 14.1-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display that could launch in 2023.

Great news! That rumour is so easy to verify. What I heard, though, is that there will be 11-Inch model with M3 or even M4 processor some time in 2025 or perhaps 2026. If it comes in deep true black colour with awesome battery-life that's what I'll go for!

YES !
It could be the best road warrior machine: small, light, super portable.
But hook it up to a dock / monitor at home or in an office and it is a monster desktop computer.

Personally I find the 13" M1 Air way to big and heavy to carry around all day, but when at home it is used in "desktop mode" hooked up to an external monitor via a Thunderbolt dock connected to a bunch a peripherals. I could definitely use something smaller and lighter than an 13" Air when I am on the go.

Even a base M2 12" would have enough firepower for most of the people that want a 12", it doesn't have to be a M2 Pro.
Ha! I don’t disagree: a small-form MBP is certainly justified for exactly the things you describe below. As a clamshell mode + external monitor user, I have owned 12/13/15/17” MBs and MBPs over the years. Turns out, my overall needs (both docked and mobile) are best addressed by the 15”. Having said that, I just don’t see enough size and weight savings that a 1” smaller and Xg lighter 12” MBP offers to justify both a 12” and 13” MBPs in the lineup. When I look at the current MBP lineup of 13/14/16”, I wonder about that 14”. Why? And when I consider a 12/13/14/16” lineup, that why question turns more toward “do we really need multiple 1” size differences in the MBP lineup?” What I could see is a MBP lineup that is only two options: small (12”) and big (16”). That offers very clear differentIation that makes even a cat could navigate. And there in lies the issue: Apple knows people can be weirdly specific. And they also know, or have data proving the same, that having such variation is portable. While I get and support that individual specificity, having 12/13/14” & 16” ‘pro’ laptops still seems overkill. It what do I know about managing and evolving a trillion dollar company? Next to northing. 🤪
