Apple now plans to release a new 27-inch display with mini-LED backlighting in October due to the Shanghai lockdown, which has resulted in production of the display being delayed, according to display industry consultant Ross Young.

In a tweet, Young said Apple is in the process of moving production of the display from Quanta Computer to a different supplier and/or location, resulting in a delay. Young said it is now looking like the display will be released in October, whereas he previously claimed the display was on track for a June release, around Apple's developer conference WWDC.

Mini-LED backlighting would pave the way for the display to feature ProMotion with a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz. This could result in the display essentially being a "Studio Display Pro," but it's unclear if Apple would use that branding. Additional details are still unknown, including pricing. The existing Studio Display starts at $1,599.

Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, has in the past accurately revealed that the sixth-generation iPad mini would feature an 8.3-inch display and that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models would feature ProMotion.
I wonder how the pricing will compare to the Porsche Design mini-LED?

Yes that's a frameless 32" mini LED display (4608 LED/1152 zone) with 4K resolution, two speakers, and high 144Hz refresh rate for $1799 available 6/15.

Studio Display Pro: Fixed stand, $2000
Studio Display Max: Pivoting stand, $2500
Studio Display Ultra: Height-adjustable stand, $3000
Studio Display Plaid (sorry, Elon): Height-adjustable stand with wheels, $4000.

How so? Mini-LED backlight would not change the Thunderbolt bandwidth limitation at all, and to my knowledge, it’s not possible to allow 5K 120hz, except using DSC (which is still irrelevant to the backlighting technology)
Totally agree with you that backlighting and refresh rate are completely unrelated
120hz isnt possible due to thunderbolt limitations
Regarding 5k@120 over TB, that was also my understanding, but it looks like you can run 2*5k@60 from a single thunderbolt 4 cable using Caldigit TS4. Not sure if that uses DSC or not.
So if that's possible I'm sure Apple can find a way to run 5k@120 even if it's not completely standard.

However the mini-led would also imply HDR so now we're talking 5k@120@10bits (I think ?) which would require even more bandwidth, so is that doable ? In theory it requires 53Gbps if my Math is correct but I's likely that DSC can overcome that to compress it into a 40Gbps stream.

I can smell something but I can’t see the Bull ?

If this happens (X to doubt) then it’ll easily be £2999 or even £3999 knowing Apple.

All I wanted was an iMac that looks like the Studio Display with an M1 of any flavour (or at this point M2) but nope - Apple had to kill that dream

Sounds like an iMac honestly.

Apple, how about move the hit up the other suppliers in Vietnam and India? It's one thing after another new products are due to be delayed.
We always suspected that Apple was playing games by pushing the Mac Studio/Studio Display and hiding their larger iMac to be released later so it wouldn't impact sales. But oh that is just a rumor. :D

Using Display Stream Compression (DSC), it should be possible to support 5K @120Hz @ 8 bits over TB4 using DisplayPort 1.4.

To go to 10-bit, you need DisplayPort 2.0 alt-mode over USB4 (though downstream devices are limited to USB2 speeds) and it requires a USB controller that supports DP2 alt-mode, which is something Apple could certainly implement in M2 (as well as HDMI 2.1, which also supports 5K @120Hz @ 10 bit).

Promotion is in BETA on this one, just so you know when you consider buying it.

This is total nonsense. Apple just released a 27" display, and I'm pretty confident production of that display has either ground to a halt or has been seriously curtailed. No way are they going to release another one in a few months.

The only way this is remotely accurate is if the display is for a 27" iMac.

They could use DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 to transfer a 5K120 signal over USB4. Thunderbolt/USB4 has a bidirectional bandwidth of 40Gbps. Using all that bandwidth for downstream only will get you 80Gbps which is enough for a 4 lane DP 2.0, no need for DSC.

I don’t think it will be called the Studio Display Pro. Maybe the Studio Display XDR, and sell it for $3999. I think the current XDR Display will be replaced with an updated model, possibly with a higher refresh rate or resolution, to go along with the new AS Mac Pro.
Agreed with the naming.

Earlier rumors pegged the price at about half the price of Pro Display XDR. Depending on how you interpret that wording (is it 50% of $4999 or $5999 since it will likely include the stand), it may cost between $2499 and $2999.

My guess is $2999, which gives a good 2x price separation between $1599 Studio Display and $5999 (with the stand) Pro Display XDR.
