This product line is so bloated and redundant it's unbelievable. All for the Chinese market too.
Why do you care? Shouldn’t people with different needs than you, or people in other markets, be able to get phones they want? This nonsense about Apple’s product lines needing to be streamlined is insane.

It’s the largest company in the world with an ecosystem that locks people in. They need to have a reasonable diversity in their product line. Offering a variety of options is what allows them to keep people in their ecosystem, without them having to go to outside of Apple to get what they want.

Why not wait for 72 x 9?

While the rumored 6.1-inch iPhone isn't expected to feature an OLED display like the iPhone X, the device will still have a more advanced LCD display than previous iPhones, according to Taiwan's Commercial Times.

Japan Display's Full Active LCD

The report, translated from Chinese, claims Apple will be adopting Japan Display's so-called "Full Active" LCD technology. Unlike traditional LCDs, like those of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Full Active LCDs only require ultra-slim 0.5mm bezels on all four sides, even smaller than those on the iPhone X.

Japan Display says its Full Active LCDs are six-inch displays with a resolution of 2,160×1,080 pixels. Accordingly, the panels have an 18:9 aspect ratio, meaning their length is double their width.

This suggests the 6.1-inch iPhone will have a taller display, likely with a cutout for the TrueDepth camera system, although not quite as tall as the iPhone X with its unique 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The device is already rumored to resemble the iPhone X's nearly full-screen design, so this would make sense.

A 6.1-inch display with a resolution of 2,160×1,080 pixels would have around 395 pixels per inch. KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo said the 6.1-inch iPhone's display will have 320-330 PPI, however, so there's conflicting information.

This rumor is consistent with a report from The Wall Street Journal in September, which said Apple was considering using Japan Display's advanced LCD panels in some 2018 iPhone models. Full Active LCDs have already been used by some Chinese smartphone makers, including Xiaomi for its Mi Mix 2.

The use of Full Active LCDs instead of OLED displays is one design compromise that will allow Apple to sell the 6.1-inch iPhone at a cheaper price point. Others include an aluminum frame instead of stainless steel, a single-lens instead of dual-lens rear camera, and no 3D Touch, according to Kuo.

In a research note obtained by MacRumors today, Kuo predicted the 6.1-inch iPhone will be a mid-range device priced between $700 and $800 in the United States, up from his previous $650 to $750 estimate.

In the event Mr. Ive is paying attention, that would be one fine looking iPhone, distinctly better in appearance than anything they've yet released.

Oh, and while at it, spend some time refining iOS.

Premium:
4.7" ($699) -> 5.8" ($999)
5.5" ($799) -> 6.5" ($1,149)

Mainstream:
6.1" ($799)

Apple is raising prices for everyone. If you want the latest iPhone with the best features, it will cost at least $999.
It’s a losing strategy, imo. Every year Apple gets huge sales due to upgrade hype year after year. With the “latest and greatest” now out of mainstream price range, that hype will become significantly muted. But maybe it’s just becoming too expensive to introduce exciting new features.

A wide net to catch a lot of fish.

No 3D touch? Come on. That's a huge step backwards.
According to 9to5Mac this rumor doesn’t say no 3D Touch. It claims the phone could be more expensive because of it. Honestly I think none of them know and they’re all just throwing crap out there to see what sticks.

Unfortunately their phone lineup is starting to look like their computer lineup.

Very small improvements from one model to the next while asking a premium price.

And is the iPhone X of 2017 the Mac Pro of 2013?

People will always want to keep up with the Joneses and Apple is banking on that.

This rumour gives me hope Apple is finally back on track. 4years of iPhone 6 design was too long and the x is not the solution.

I do wonder if there isn’t a reason that the camera could be hidden onscreen in the status bar without any cutouts? Also nice to think about is 120hz smoothness.

The last and best part is that the lcd stack might be thin enough to accommodate an underscreen finger print sensor.

I would like to see Apple go for some sharper corners too, the roundness is cool and all from a holding viewpoint but I feel like I’d give up some comfort for some smaller curves?

Honestly most people don’t even use it

Opinion or Fact?

One might argue that 3D touch is not as useful as others think, which by not including it on a 6.1 iPhone, will actually help reduce the cost of the new iPhone. Therefore others might see the price point more attractive.

One might argue the opposite. I use 3D Touch quite a lot, I find it very useful. 3D Touch = Right Click. I would be annoyed if Apple would remove it.

So true I’m hating these tall phones. They need to be wider. I would be very happy with a phone exactly the same size as the 8 plus with no bezels

A bit more wider than the current phones, and that would be a joy to use.

Apple should create something with the aspect ratio of the 8 Plus, but make the side bezels as small as possible and the top and bottom bezels slightly smaller (enough to maintain the aspect ratio). Boom — you get a larger screen, smaller bezels, Touch ID — and no Notch or Face ID required.
Give me $3 million, Apple.

Edited to add: I hate the overly tall aspect ratio of the X.

Argh! The aspect ratios are properly expressed as 2:1 and 39:18. Reduce your fractions, and both sides of a fraction should be an integer.

The smartphone market is becoming mature the way desktop and notebook computers are.

Consumers no longer need to upgrade every year. There's nothing the iPhone X can do that iPhone 7 can't. It runs the same OS and same apps.

As smartphone shipment volumes decrease and replacement cycles get longer, Apple's only way to maintain profit is to increase prices. Even if Apple sold iPhone X for $799, the bulk of the consumers don't need to upgrade.

I want what I see in that picture. No Notch. No Bezels.

So you want no front-facing camera, no FaceTime/Skype/etc, no selfies, no FaceID, No speaker (& microphone) in the usual place to hear calls, No ApplePay, No Animoji, no proximity sensor, etc.

I guess you want maybe TouchID to come back with some implementation on the back of the phone? Or maybe much of the above via the back of the phone?

That stuff has to be somewhere, unless you are willing to trade off the functionality & benefits it brings. I feel no great love for the notch myself but it's not there because Apple found it aesthetically pleasing. It's there because that stuff needs a home on the front. Make a 6.1" 18:9 phone even taller?
