Safari is such a crap just because of NO ACCOUNT SWITCHING in 2023, say waaaat... dev tools are miserable, only good thing - UI which is nice, but there is a browser with a better UI - Arc Browser, even thou Arc sucks because it tries to make it a notepad first and browser second.

I wish I can use safari on my work windows computer.

I was bummed when Apple discontinued Safari for Windows.

Yeah... Safari 3 thru 5 were released for Windows between 2007 and 2012, according to Wikipedia.

Ostensibly, Apple discontinued it due to "low market share" -- which seems like a decidedly disingenuous argument to me, since the Mac itself has always had a smaller market share than Windows. It feels like the obvious path of least resistance to increasing Safari market share would have been to continue to iterate on that Windows version. After all, that's basically what Google did; there is very little about Chrome itself that is somehow uniquely innovative. Basically, Google took Apple's Webkit project, wrapped it in their own branding and data harvesters, copied over some "best-of" features from Firefox, made it available abso-bloodly-lutely everywhere and advertised it as though it's the best thing since God created Eve.

IMHO, that easily could have been Apple instead.

But with the current reality, and the fact that all desktop Safari users are by definition also using Macs... beating Edge like this actually says an awful lot about how horribly Edge has been received. That's a surprisingly impressive failure, on Microsoft's part.

This is surprising! I've long been a fan of Safari for various reasons, but I must admit getting slightly disillusioned lately as it seems to have stagnated somewhat compared to Firefox and Chrome.

In particular, the rushed/botched updated UI (and subsequent rollback) a couple of years back was really disappointing. Especially since the UI hasn't been updated since then and is now starting to feel really dated. I really liked the new UI and wished they'd fixed the issues rather than just abandoned it.

It surprises me that still today, browsing is a horrible user experience - especially on the phone. Almost every site that you visit has dynamic content (ie. ads). When you navigate to a page and the content is popping all over the place as it loads. This is an issue with all browsers. It makes it to where you have to have this long pause when you go to a page for it to fully load everything and content to stop moving all around the screen. This is the problem they need to solve!

Nice. Safari really is my favorite browser. It's fast, seems light, and not buggy, and generally just stays out of the way while keeping my internet stuff organized.
I use Edge at work due to policy, and....you know what? I don't hate it? It's the first MS browser that I don't actually hate. Edge is fine for me at work.
I've had some compatability issues with Firefox in the past, and horrendous memory bloat with Chrome, too many times to count. It's a habit of mine for the past several years to pass on Chrome.
Though I hear it runs well on a Chromebook (I should hope so.).

I use Chrome with Chrome Sync and never have a problem with passwords. As an IT Admin for many companies, I'm constantly needing to change and use passwords and literally have never had the problem you describe.

I don't use Chrome Sync so maybe that's required to make Chrome actually work right. It's literally just the stored password in the browser. It's been going on for literal years for me and it's happened across multiple machines and OSs.

I really like Edge and basically use it as a supplement to Safari especially since I can use Edge on my Windows work computer and have that stuff sync to Edge on my Mac.

Also, some websites for whatever reason just don't work on Safari but will work on Edge/Chrome, and I stay away from Chrome so I use them on Edge, like some election map websites on the NYTimes.

browser engine is the same, not the browser wrapper - ie. MS services and Windows integration
problem is, MS tries very hard to get you to consent to sending all your browsing data to MS - even from other browsers! (first thing the Edge is trying to do when you fire it up first time is ask you whether you want to import all other browser data into Edge - continuously, not one time import - and its recommended settings so you can turn in on accidentally when it will ask again - and it will ask again)
But they use a normal app installation method instead of Chrome which is literal garbage on the Mac.

Somewhat reluctantly I'm using Firefox. I really wanted to stay with Safari, but the damn thing won't play my TV channels. All other browsers do (well, haven't tried Edge, because, ya know)

Not surprising as edge/IE is dying. I use only Apple devices so it’s safari and everything for me. I used to use safari when I had a windows laptop in the past. I’ve always found Safari to be the best.

I’m just astonished there are people using Edge! I’m guessing it’s made up of MicroSoft employees and masochists… and there’s probably a high degree of overlap there :p
It's required to do any sort of parental controls on Windows. That's the only reason we use it.

I think people need to get over this Google stuff. EVERYONE, including Apple mines your data. You cell provider knows every single DNS call your phone makes. Your ISP as well. Your Credit Card companies know OH so much about you. Do you use ANY social media?

Go to YouTube, search for a video called "Apple is Terrible for your Privacy" and watch it. They let 3rd party apps gather mountains of data on you. If you use the Internet, at all, privacy is a myth.
Collecting data is one thing. Actively selling it to advertisers is another thing altogether. In the case of Google it’s their primary business model. Why do you think Google offers all those free services? Altruism? What do you think happens to all those Google Docs people store? They are monetized of course. Trying to lump Apple and others along with Google is truly irrational. The scale and scope of Google’s data mining is so much greater than its competitors. Again, this is Google’s profit center, their business, their reason for being. The services they offer are just bait.

I use Safari, Chrome and Firefox daily—but Safari is my main browser. On occasion it has its quirks, but it's a solid browser. The WebKit team have been working at an incredible pace to add features in the past two years. Each 'point' update has been full-featured.

Here's my list of the best Safari extensions if you plan to use it daily:

* Stop the Madness (Currently half price)
* AdGuard (Free, hands down the best content blocker)
* Noir (Dark mode styles for sites)

Also worth nothing that Orion is currently development, which uses WebKit, but also has support for Firefox and Chrome extensions.
My must-have extensions are Ghostery (doesn't lag the page load latency at all!), Dark Reader (for dark mode), and Improved Tube to configure my YT experience.

Edge had something going on for it, people even started to like it.

Then Microsoft turned it into ad dispenser and nagware.
Yeah. I only recently started using Edge (on Windows). Really fast browser and it’s VERY good at resource management. It uses less RAM than any other browser I’ve tried.

But very quickly it has started to become bloated. Lots of the new features are unnecessary. I want my browser to load web pages for me and nothing else. If this trend continues, I may switch back to Brave.

I only use Firefox, with its API for uBlock Origin and and container tabs (I use the facebook container as well by Mozilla) which blocks facebook trying so snatch info all over the web as well so it cannot follow you around and cookie sandboxing which Mozilla implemented so other sites cant dip into your cookie jar, its the better browser for my needs.
I use Safari and Waterfox plus Firefox for private browsing. Chrome? Never in a gazillion years. Google anything is banned from my network. Even 'google.com' is blocked at the firewall. If there is a need for it then I open it up but only on a temporary basis.

Are we not going to talk about the concept that Edge is on 90% of computers and Safari on 10%, and Safari still wins?

Apple's Safari has retaken the lead over Microsoft Edge to become the world's second most popular desktop browser, based on data provided by web analytics service StatCounter.

safari-icon-blue-banner.jpeg

According to the data, Safari is now used on 11.87 percent of desktop computers worldwide, 0.87 percent ahead of Edge, which stands at 11 percent. Google Chrome remains in first place with a dominant 66.13 percent share, and Mozilla's Firefox stands in fourth with 5.65 percent. Here's how the latest full rankings look:
  • Chrome 66.13%
  • Safari 11.87%
  • Edge 11%
  • Firefox 5.65%
  • Opera 3.09%
  • IE 0.55%
The stats look favorable for Apple compared to the same time last year, when Edge trumped Safari for second place by a small sub one-percent margin, owing to broadly positive reception of Microsoft's reimagined default browser for Windows 11.

Apple's resurgence in the browser wars corresponds to a marked increase in global Mac sales in 2022, despite supply constraints throughout the course of the year. Interest in the ‌M1‌, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, and M2 chips saw Apple's Mac revenue hit $11.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022, up $2.5 billion year over year.

In fiscal 2022, Macs earned a total of $40.1 billion, up $5 billion from the $35 billion that Macs earned in fiscal 2021. In Q4 2022, half of Mac buyers were new to the product line, giving macOS and Apple's default Safari browser significantly more exposure.

Despite Safari's surge, it has made virtually no progress in catching up to first-placed Google Chrome, which retains an iron-clad grip on the market, with its share down just 0.51 percent compared to the previous year. Chrome's popularity on both macOS and Windows platforms continues largely unabated.

I hate the edge browser a lot of apps on my work computer default to it and the browser often doesn’t load up. I often have to copy and past the url into chrome. This behavior is mirrored on both my pc in the office and the thinkpad they provided for the days I’m remote

You sound fun

Meh. What matters most is that one uses the best tool for themselves. When I’m on MacOS or iOS that is Safari for me, and Edge when I am on Windows (which I use 10 hrs a day during the week for work). I really could care less which one dominates some chart somewhere.
