Some people want larger screens for web browsing and media. Others want the smaller screen for pocketability and one-handed operation.

This debate has gone around in circles for too long, and I think Apple can end the controversy by offering both a small and large iPhone.

Ha, my Nexus 5 has a screen that is bigger and destroys the iPhone and it's much cheaper but better IMO. So yes Apple are right.

And:

Other concerns noted in the document included the idea that Android rivals were "spending 'obscene' amounts of money on advertising and/or carrier channel to gain traction" and that mobile carriers had an interest in limiting iPhone sales because of, among other things, the high subsidies they had to pay on the device.

Is going to become more and more important I think, you can't sell a phone successfully without carrier backing.

Yes, but the problem is, Apple's preferred solution is to try to put a legal stop to any serious competition.

However, as judges keep telling Apple's lawyers, the sheer fact that other companies are selling competing devices, is not sufficient grounds for a sales ban.

And as I keep opining, the main thing that Apple has done with these lawsuits is to validate Samsung as a competitor, give them publicity, and make them into the underdog that Apple used to love to be.

I wrote something similar above. Apple is getting mostly negative attention - especially with the releasing of documents like this - and to what real benefit. I almost feel bad for Apple because they are in so deep that I don't think they could drop the lawsuits due to ego and the hit they would take on that. Better to keep up the fight and then blame the courts if they lose.

I'd love to know why Apple would want stuff like this to be made public. Is this Android holy war really worth it?

I don't think they wanted it. I don't think they could prevent it during discovery.

#6 and #9 especially interesting and shows much concern over Google services being ahead or dangerous competition. Google must be loving it.

Also interested to see in print "create low cost iPhone model based on iPod touch to replace 3GS"

The iPhone 5S and iPhone 5 still scratch with no effort, especially noticeable on the black models

That's a quality issue

I have a gold 5S and have no issues with scratching. You know for certain that the new HTC One isn't prone to scuffs/scratches?

This is why I ask if its worth it. These are not the kind of documents I'd want plastered all over tech sites. I fear Steve's "holy war" is going to end up hurting Apple more than any competitor.

Looking at my 5s, and looking at that picture...I hope they make 4.7 and the 5.5 is a joke.

Because the 5.5 looks like a joke. That's not a phone. Sorry. That's not a one handed device. Sorry. That won't fit in anyone's pocket. Sorry.

I've said that from the beginning.

And having it in print (as a quote) in Isaacson's book was a mistake.

I hope if Apple goes with a larger screen, they also keep the smaller screen option and ensure that the smaller screen phone keeps pace with the larger screen phone technology wise.

It seems to me that unless the next major release of iOS is revamped to take advantage of extra screen real estate by allowing things like running two apps side-by-side, there's not much practical advantage for me personally to have a larger screen in my pocket. I recognize that some people want a larger screen; but with iOS in its current form, I don't think I personally would have any tangible benefit from having a larger screen.

Reading that Jobs email actually has me feeling embarrassed for Apple. I'm sure their competitors are getting a good laugh reading it. If Samsung can get stuff like this leaked I can see why they would never settle.

You don't consume much media on your phone?

It would be wise for Apple to incorporate more data on a bigger screen devices.

If the iPhone 6 were to have a 5.5" display and it still displays the same amount of data as the iPhone 5 & 5s, then it is kinda useless. :(

Something like what the iPad can do is good for larger screen devices.
So we actually have a reason to go for a larger screen phones. :)

I don't think there's too much embarrassing about the content as an internal memo. Meaning - there's nothing wrong with the document. What's embarrasing is that it has now been made public.

Like there's nothing embarrassing about a boy passing a girl a note at school telling her he likes her. But if it's intercepted and read to the class...well...

Steve Jobs believes Android is a stolen product. He would drive the company into the ground if it meant Android's demise.

Quite frankly, I don't know why people are so worked up over these documents. Samsung is doing very well, there's nothing wrong with Apple being worried about that.

Samsung doesn't have a great track record either or did people forget the hundred page document with bullet list item on how to copy the iPhone?

It's pretty futile. Android isn't going anyway.

That doesn't stop Apple/Steve Jobs from trying. Apple is their heart and soul. After the near death of the company the culture surrounding the company is iron clad. I don't think Steve Jobs could overthrow Android ever, but he was acting out upon his principle.

Maybe I wasn't clear....I don't think anything in the email is embarrassing, I think the fact it's been made public is. There's a reason these things are labeled CONFIDENTIAL. I'd be curious to know how it's decided what can be made public vs what is made available to the jury.

I had a chuckle on this one:

Strategy: catch up to Android where we are behind (notifications, tethering, speech, ...) and
leapfrog them (Siri, ...)

Steve himself admitting where Apple was behind Android.

Keep reading. #6 and #9 are pretty "amusing"
