I had a chuckle on this one:

5. iOS - Scott, Joz

Strategy: catch up to Android where we are behind (notifications, tethering, speech, ...) and
leapfrog them (Siri, ...)

Steve himself admitting where Apple was behind Android.

Hence, why I ask if its worth it. At this point there's nothing for Apple to win anyway.

Keep reading. #6 and #9 are pretty "damning" ;)

This does make Apple look a bit foolish, doesn't it? Dirty laundry that becomes embarrassing when viewed in public.

6. MobileMe - Cue, SJ, Roger Rosner

Honest question. Do you think this will change posters attitude in here when it comes to making statements about what Apple would and wouldn't do when it comes to the competition? This should be an eye opener for some. Sadly, I think some will try to simply ignore it.

I agree with you, I don't think it's worth it. It's embarrassing to have it made public. This isn't going to hurt Samsung at all. I may not hurt Apple, but it is a bit humiliating, IMO.

It will be a real eye opener for a few that I can think of off the top of my head. So many whining that Google copied iOS and here is Steve acknowledging that they are behind in some areas.

It also shows motivation.

MobileMe isn't free because of a benevolent company. It's free because, point blank - they needed to compete with Google's cloud services.

p.s. I still think app discovery on Apple's app store is painful. Google's isn't wonderful - but definitely better in my opinion.

How do you think companies compete? I don't think Apple meetings are all about how much better they are than competitors. If that was the case they wouldn't be where they are now.

Google is releasing new tech all the time. What they did copy goes way back to the original iPhone which is done and gone with. Google has been taking steps to distance themselves from that.

No one would argue that point. The commentary is for the benefit of those (and there are at least several) who believe otherwise. That Apple doesn't pay attention or, more importantly, react to competition. That they do their own thing. That's not really accurate. And this document should be a eye opener to those that think that way.

Probably not. But I still think Apple bests to its own drum whereas Samsung does stuff just to be able to show they got there before Apple, Google etc. Gear watch is a perfect example. Wasn't even out on the market 6 months and Samsung replaced it with a new model running completely different software. There's no doubt in my mind they rushed something to market just so the media would say they beat Apple to the punch. That's not how Apple rolls. If it was, they would have scrambled to announce an updated ATV before Amazon launched their product.

Perhaps. Perhaps Samsung is just very aggressive and (like Google sometimes does with their products) - puts something out and gauges interest and then builds on it.

I'm not saying it's a good model or a bad one. Just different. I don't think every company (even Samsung) is as "reactionary" to Apple at every turn as some here do.

I'd still love to know how this stuff is made public and if Apple's legal team could have prevented that from happening. It has nothing to do with whether Samsung infringed on certain patents. I don't get the relevance to the trial, though I certainly can see why Samsung would want this made public.

This is Steve himself admitting that Google is ahead of Apple in certain areas. This email is from 2010. Steve claimed that Google stole Android yet he was admitting that iOS was behind in a few key areas. Priceless. In a way he was outdone at his own game.

I would think that they would have stopped it from becoming public if they could have. Samsung must be jumping up and down and turning cartwheels now that this has been made public. If it stayed internal, no big deal at all, but now it is embarrassing.

I'd maybe agree with you if they hadn't released something 6 months later with a completely different operating system. The first Gear wasn't ready for prime time, but all Samsung cared about was news media saying they beat Apple in the smartwatch race. Aside from that I do think Samsung's strategy is to try and be all things to all people; to throw anything and everything at the wall and see what sticks. Apple is never going to do that.

But Apple isn't in the smartwatch race yet. There are several smart watches/watch type devices out there now and there may be more before Apple does or does not enter the market. I think the Samsung conspiracy thing is really overblown on this one. They have released 2 watches and Apple has none. And even if Apple enters the market, it is still a ways off. Samsung may have version 3 out by then yet people here say Samsung copied Apple.

Who cares except a handful of Samsung/Android fanboys? Plus you're talking about stuff that is 4 years old? Apple has stuff that is better, Samsung has some nice things, Google has done some nice stuff. Who cares??

I think many people here care, including you. :) I'm merely quoting the email, I didn't write it or post it here.

The difference is Samsung will throw a bunch of crap at a wall. Some of it is nice I admit, but a lot of it junk, their watch included. Apple limits what they focus on, but they generally do a good job.

Just because Apple hasn't released a smart watch yet, doesn't mean Samsung didn't steal the idea from them if they had knowledge of a product.

I think Google more than Samsung.

I think more people care than you say. And clearly you cared enough to respond. And Apple enthusiasts should care just as much because this is a rare inside peek at Apple.

The Apple stole the idea from Nike, Pebble, Casio, Sony, etc.

No one stole anything.

Samsung didn't make the first smartwatch either. And Apple hasn't yet made one. So since smartwatches already exist, and Apple doesn't make one but may, who stole the idea?

True. Actually all of Apple's competitors must be getting a chuckle out of this. It probably won't harm Apple at all, but still.

This should only be news if there was a "didn't" before "expressed". I'd normally think that the customer isn't always right, but now that eastern Asia is buying smartphones, maybe they should offer the ridiculous 5.5" one. And they're about one release cycle too late, maybe more, unfortunately.

Samsung released a 12" tablet based on an iPad pro rumor. It's quite clear Samsung doesn't want to play second fiddle to Apple for the third time.

Outdone in one aspect. Google never even thought of an all touch phone to begin with. I don't think any company ever would be successful if they never admitted someone did something better.

It's old news, though, because of this: "Can anyone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do?" Having received a satisfactory answer, he continues, "So why the ******* doesn't it do that?" But they still need to work on iCloud in some ways.

Also, killing Ping was a sign. I'm glad they dumped it instead of bullying unsuspecting users into using a failing social network...

Yea, I'm sure that Samsung reads MacRumors and makes anything that Apple is rumored to be working on. No one does anything unless they think Apple is going to do it.

That's not the only reason. The best way to see what the customer wants is throw something out there and see what the feedback is based on real customer usage. The biggest complaint about the Gear 1 was battery life. They changed to Tizen in the 2 to improve battery life.
