Actually, the Apple Store indicates purchases through September 15. The October 15 date is merely to submit your claim.

"If you’re a student, teacher, or staff member and you buy a Mac with your education discount between June 3 and September 15, 2008, you can get a free iPod touch or iPod nano after rebate.*"

To get the rebate claim for the free ipod the apple website states that customers must submit the claim by October 15, 2008... though it seems it would make more sense that the promotion ends in september if the mac and ipod revisions are to come by then.

This is the link to the apple page. Read the 3rd step on How To get your free iPod on the right side of the page.

I know Apple is experiencing some growing pains at the moment and there have been some things the company would have wanted to handle better.

That said, this growth is exceptional for the platform and that will benefit anyone who uses it. More support, better compatibility, more applications etc.

Good stuff.

Take that Seinfeld. :D

Massive is certainly the right word to describe these numbers. Now that it's out there, Apple better hit these numbers.

I think for those who need a computer for school, I would say go for an imac, that way you have a computer to work on, but you won't get pissed off when the new laptops come out.

Or you can get the a macbook air, that design is going to be with us for awhile, and I think the air is suppose to see only processor updates. And if you if your concerned about minor updates with the air, you shouldn't be getting the air to begin with. Its simply a basic task machine and a minor update isn't going to affect you.

It's all those switchers!

The move to Intel was the best decision Apple ever made. Their hardware is competitively priced and performance is great; its more accessible than ever; and thanks to the stagnent development of Windows, people are looking for alternatives.

I remember wait at a bus stop, and a local business owner saw I bought a Mac - we started chatting; she had just recently moved to one. As she said, she needed to relearn some basics, but now she is a real wizz on it.

What this goes to show is that if you do put up a decent alternative to Windows - people will buy it. Apple is proof that competition is alive and well in the computer world.

i beleive it, i've been to the local apple store twice this month and each time i could pick out at least 2 or 3 parents buying everything they could for their 1 or 2 kids going to college.
watched a guy yesterday buy his two boys two MBPs, two 24" iMacs, two apple tv's, two airport base stations, and two iPhones.

kids want macs, thank the iPod.

Yep, the reason I'm going for the old design is thanks to the back to school promos. Free Airport Express and free iWork 08'. :)

iWork rocks - and you'd be surprised, in New Zealand, it is becoming the defacto office suite of choice in schools. It does everything kids need without the huge price ontop.

I have Office 2008, but thats more to do with compatibility than anything else; if there weren't any concerns like that, I'd go with iWorks too.

I wonder what iWorks '09 has in store :)

to wait or not to wait......

Let's say I purchase on September 14 and the new ones are released on the 24th. Can't I return the one I purchased on the 14th and exchange it for the new one? I know the model number on the Touch might change, and those are specifically listed, but it says any computer qualifies. Would it still qualify, or would they use the date of the exchange?

Anybody know the ins and outs of an exchange and this promo? Could they run out of the old version before it ships (if I order it on the 14th?)Then they'd have to upgrade me right!? Do they put the old versions on "clearance" prices?

I'm on the fence because I've heard both the macbook and Touch may receive price decreases. If they each go down $100, then I just as well wait for the new stuff...if they don't go down, then I go for the current one with the rebate.

I suppose I could still buy on the 14th, and even if the rebate won't work with a return, at least I could decide whether to forgo the rebate for the newer stuff, if the price indeed has been dropped.

Thinking it through even as I type!

Can't wait... its time to upgrade from a mac mini duo core 1.66 to a macbook atleast 2.4 core duo 2 or whatever the fastest is! The mini was a test machine for me 2 years ago to see if I liked macs.. im ready for some serious stuff now..

iworks

Oh yea, I forgot to ask. I am a Mac newbie. Is this iworks bascially like microsoft office? Is it not normally included and is it included as part of the back to school promo? If I wait, do I not get it on the new model? Still toying of Dell vs Apple, but it's granny's $$ (not that I have unlimited $$-but $100-200 won't bother her either way-still thinking lower end Mac though as Dell can be had for $850 with all I need)

Careful though, that Jerry Seinfeld/Bill Gates Vista ad coupled with Dell's iTunes-killer music service from a mentally ill former Apple exec could really slow Apple down!

iWork is not as fully featured as Office, but it is easier to use thanks to it's less cluttered interface and has much better multimedia capabilities.

It is a new piece of software, the Presentation Suite (Keynote) leaves Powerpoint for dead, but the Spreadsheet is still in version one.

Office is of course more compatible because nearly everyone uses Office.

Don't just get a Mac because others are, get what suites you best. There are good reasons why people are buying Macs though.

It's a personal choice, no one can make up your mind for you.

Curiously, here in England, my friends (and most others I know) perceive Macs to be great, but not worth the money. They're like "I'd get one, but it's only a computer and they cost too much".

Good thing really, don't want all my friends owning Macs - gotta have my own toy :)

Not included, £55 extra. The iWork programs can all import and export equivalent Windows files (ie Pages can open and save Word files, same for the others).

For students interested in buying a new Mac at this time, the expiring Back to School promotion presents a bit of a dilemma. Apple is currently offering a new iPod Touch with most Mac purchases until September 15th. Rumors, however, predict that Apple will introduce new laptops as well as a new iPod Touch shortly after the end of the promotion.

I would gather that most students have no idea that there are rumors of new laptops or iPods. Though there is a large population of college students among the regular readers of Macrumors and other tech sites (I was one of them a year ago), the vast majority, while tech savvy, don't really read into the rumor sites as much as we do.

But in any case, great news for Apple and the Mac!

ooh maybe they are going to release the i<insrt-one-of-many-vapourware-items-here> that I have been waiting for ;)

nah serioously - good news if they can do it..

I am slowly switching peeps here.... I am doing my part too :)
