I likewise was able to use my AT&T wireless number/password to login using the DIRECTV option. I have only DIRECTVNOW, and no traditional DIRECTV service.

Not sure if it actually works or not because of course not a single app supports SSO.

Edit: Tried the AE App and got this system UI alert which is obviously linked to SSO. Didn't actually work though.

Just click on Allow then go back to TV Provider login and you will see it below. I have 11 in my list. However, just because it is there does not mean it will work. You must also have a TV Service with this channel in your lineup. If you only have Directv Now it will not because DTV Now does not yet support SSO. I am hoping soon.

Surprised there is no DirecTV Now. I thought it was supposed to be one of the first available at launch? What a pain. I've avoided signing into all the various apps with it because this was supposed to be coming soon.

Actually, I did try one app: ABC. When I activated online it said I was good to go and could watch live or on demand programming, but I still can't figure out how to do something basic in the app like watch live TV. IDK why I can't just watch it live in the DirecTV app and have to use some special app. I don't get the reasoning behind broadcast networks working so hard by hiding and restricting their content. I mean, someone on here explained the other day about all the contracts with local networks, but they're going to kill themselves off! I can't get most broadcast stations where I live because after they switched to digital they just told all the people at the edge of town to screw off and I can't get any Leaf antenna to work properly. But even if I could get it to work it would be an inconvenience when I'm using the Apple TV, and a lot of content I consume on my iPhone or iPad and not a TV. So I just don't watch any broadcast network content. They can eat it for all I care as the good TV isn't on broadcast anymore anyway. They're dying and all they really have left is sports. Maybe I should stop complaining and just let them kill themselves?

How was this feature added/enabled without a software update?

Apple has the ability to remotely control your iPhone and iPad from Cupertino. I learnt this from when a specific app publisher passed away, that app mysteriously disappeared from my iPad and my history shortly after. And it no longer shows up in the App Store. It was a paid app too at $7.99. I asked someone I know who develops apps for a major software company, not Apple, and they indirectly told me very casually that Apple can control their products remotely by adding and removing features and disabling specific apps. One thing I think Apple should do is restrict access to the App Store and updating apps if you don't upgrade to the latest version of iOS.

I have DirecTVNow, and was able to sign in to single sign on.
Does not work for me I get error below tried this a number of times I only have DirecTV that works fine via the DirectTV Now app:

DirecTV Now doesn't exist in the Apple SSO. I think that guy was saying some *apps* he's used have DirecTV Now as a sign-in option.

It's most certainly not included in this Apple option, the end. No, using DirecTV doesn't work. It's not DirecTV, it's DirecTV Now - two different logins.
Ok that explains alot sure did not work for me. Oh well I can still use the DirectTV Now app I got my free apple TV so now I have two apple TV's with the DirectTV Now service besides my iOS devices

While I expect direct tv now to eventually be a separate login option, like it is for individual apps, it is working to some degree if you happen to have an AT&T wireless account.

I didn't think it was actually working until FXNOW was just updated to support SSO.

It works.

Stupid Time Warner...doah! I mean Spectrum.

Supposedly, it's no longer Time Warner Cable anymore, as the merger is complete and the Spectrum label officially will change over after the start of the new Year. It's confusing how they attempt to explain this.

What's crazy is that apple can now push an individual setting update to iOS without you needing to update the OS. That's some crazy deep integration. Anyone know how this even works?

Compared to the US Population of 325,151,542...

As a SlingTV user I'm going to agree with you on the point as a whole.... but there are only 100M pay TV household in America... so his numbers are sold but probably inaccurate.

I would never do this, but what is in place to stop someone without cable service from signing in via SSO with a friend's or family member's credentials?

Its not the least bit crazy. The setting was already in iOS 10.0. It was just deactivated.

However..if you also have AT&T wireless, your DirecTVNOW subscription is linked intrinsically by way of your phone number, so by logging in with your AT&T wireless credentials, it works.

Here is the statement from Comcast on it:

Comcast has revealed no plans to support Apple TV’s new single sign-on feature and instead told FierceCable that it will continue to work with tech companies Adobe and Synacor, and industry group CTAM, to develop a universal authentication scheme.

“We have made great progress and expect to enable SSO next year,” a Comcast rep said. “We are focused on helping create an open standard that is platform agnostic and easily adoptable, and will continue to share our best practices with the industry through CTAM and the OATC (Open Authentication Technology Committee).”

If you have complaints because of no VERIZON or Comcast Xfinity, do yourself a favor. File an FCC complaint. There is a pending regulation change that would force such providers to allow you to use this but they are lobbying against it to the next administration already to stop it. SO NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO COMPLAINT. FCC Complaints. It's easy to do.
Excellent response! You seem familiar with the process, might you be able to help me and other users to access the necessary information quickly? I promise that I will spread the word if Ican get the right info on what bills or links might be relevant. Thanks!

Another excellent response, your on it! I used to work with CableLabs and I'm sure Comcast sees this as some kind of threat to their business as they want to roll out a proprietary product of their own... this kind of monopoly thinking caused Boulder to take the local cable co. (Then TCI) to the US supremacy court. They often publicly claim to be working on some type of open standard to be in the game but will drag their feet and privately invest in lawyers to give them a strategic atvantage. Anyhow, I personally am considering dropping Comcast TV and Internet services in favor of something I can use with a consolidated Apple system...easy access to local news is the problem. BTW, Apple is not very helpful in transitioning to a new Apple-centric environment, they tell me to call Comcast (obviously they DONT want to help me change their service, duh!). I think this is a great opportunity for Apple to penetrate the home market and hope they are willing to take a short term sacrifices for long term market share.
On a side note, I believe that once content arrives to my house that it is mine and I should be able to do with it what I want short of reselling it. I dream of the day when I can use my Apple TV system as a I would a TiVo and easily select what what, when and where (device/location) to watch.

The DirecTV single sign on option doesn't work for me either. Using the correct login and password and yet it still tells me it's incorrect. I can login just fine on individual apps and on the website. This is with DirecTV, NOT DirecTV NOW.

Interesting, I'm unable to sign in using DirecTV Now on iOS. Was this on Apple TV or iOS?

Sorry for the super late reply - but iOS. I was also able to sign in on AppleTV once it became available. I used to have DirecTV, but now just have DirecTV Now - under a different email address, so I don't think it's just a mistake.
