Love all these "it will do X" comments. Yeah, no... NONE of you know what it will do, won't do, or what it'll look like. Stop pretending to have info, you're members of the public like we all are, YOU DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING.
Of course i'm not. If you cannot ship a product to people who speak Mandarin, Cantonese and Spanish your prospects are not good. Let alone not supporting German and French.
I'm not saying the Echo is going to die it's just that in 2 years this AI battle will be between Apple and Google.
I know what caused this to be announced. A couple weeks ago, I invested in five Echo devices, having given up on waiting for Apple to introduce such a device. This same thing happened with the Apple Watch. Years of rumors but I take the plunge and get a Pebble, sure enough, the announcement is made. All I can say, is "You're welcome."
Nonsense. Multi language support means nothing to the end user if the product is garbage. When an English speaking user attempts to use Siri and gets a poor result they don't think "Oh well at least Siri is available in Cantonese". All you are left with is a poor product that is available in multiple languages.
As I've already mentioned in post #239 their HomeKit developer platform is a mess also.
Half thinking that there might be a range of HomeKit devices. Perhaps coupled with Workflow, Apple could offer something much more customisable and powerful than the current products on offer.
Yeah no. Until Apple gets rid of its asinine privacy policy and stops neutering Siri then maybe this will be useful for more than just "Set a reminder" commands.
I'll take an Echo over this any day.
Apple has acquired 3 companies that use Machine Learning. They're very serious about delivering AI products. As an English speaker I can be ignorant of the needs of others across the globe but the reality is even with poor recognition the fact that an iPhone understands 18 languages is huge. All the sales that Amazon has clawed up to will be matched and usurped shortly by Apple based on global coverage.
This market isn't big enough for 3 big players. I'll reserve judgement on HomeKit until after WWDC. I'm not worried about its future but a nice evolutionary jump will be nice.
Are you telling me there are people out there in the market for such a device but they're looking down their noses at the Echo and Google Home thinking "I wouldn't sully my home with one of those monstrosities".
Enough courage to actually make money. What a concept for a business.
I am not trying to troll but this seems kind of silly to me because I can just say "hey Siri" and my phone will come to life and answer what I need. I don't know why this would make any sense at all. If someone could explain why this would be different from "hey Siri" on an iPhone, I might change my mind.
I don't understand it all either, and I don't believe in this product category. I'm surprised to find that Apple does (allegedly) believe in this category. I have to believe they have a different angle in mind - like it does something else that would convince someone like me that this product should even exist.
I'm not going to yell across the room (or the house) for a device in a corner to do something for me. I have an iPhone and an Apple Watch....
Incorporate Airport Time Capsule Storage as well, and it might be a worthwhile purchase.![]()
Apple: leading from behind under the leadership of Tim Cook. If all you care about is profits and stock price, then Apple has never been better.
Yes, we all know Apple prices their products at just the right price so they can barely show a profit...oh, wait...
Well, what happened to the 1%?...That's usually how percentages work, yes.

Apple, just stick to making ****ing computers already.... geeeesh.
You might be surprised.
Echo is better. I've had 2 in my house for about 8 months now. It's definitely more useful than Hey Siri, especially if your hands are full with other things (think children). The music part of the echo is nice but we don't use it very much. We mostly use the echo for automation tasks, lists, and checking on random things. It's better than a party trick which is an unfair characterization.
Most likely the people you met who feel that way just don't have the same needs/expectations. If the echo (or future Siri unit) has voice print recognition to switch between accounts automatically it can be even more useful with integration into the ecosystem.
I as thinking this as well. If they could somehow make this a router/hub/speaker combo, it MIGHT be worth looking into. Right now I just don't see the value.
I'm sure everyone's experience/expectations are different. But it's not just me and my friends who found the Echo fairly useless... the web is littered with people who consider the Echo a gadget and/or an expensive alarm clock.
For hands-free home automation, setting reminders/timers, controlling music, Apple Watch is still the best way to go IMO. It does everything most Echo users use Echo for and a whole lot more.
